Should I follow everyone back on Twitter?

Hey Warriors,

Quick question...I signed up for Twitter and followed some gurus, and also put a link on my home page, and all of a sudden I've got a bunch of people following me.

So do I follow them back automatically? (Is there a setting for that?)

Anyone have a link for a "Twitter Cheat Sheet?" :-) (WSOs considered!)

Cheers, Rich

      How would it "devalue" you?

I follow back everyone who follows me - unless they're a spambot. If you DON'T follow people back, most of them will unfollow you eventually. I regularly go through and unfollow everyone who is not following me back.

Because I follow people back, I have built up a huge following on Twitter, and every single one of those people is a potential client for my press release writing services.

Yeah, I only follow the people I am interested in following. If you follow too many people it might be hard to read the tweets of the interesting people. As a rule, anyone who tweets more than five times a day, I stop following because I find it annoying.

I use twitter.grader.com to show me how I should be following, if I'm looking for something specific.

You wouldn't want to follow me then. Sometimes I'm all social and sent 5 tweets to just 1 person in a day. There's only so much you can say in less than 120 characters.

I guess the idea is to get a lot of followers. I think people will follow you if you follow them. Then you can eliminate them and hopefully they still follow you.

Yeah, it's so annoying when people use social networks to be social.

Until they go through their follower lists and purge all the people who aren't following them back. People that follow people to get them to follow them back, and then turnaround and unfollow them can get a bad reputation, and rightfully so.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Not necessarily. I used to alywas follow everyone back...and found out some were real weirdos and unfollowed them. I basically weeded out a few twits.

I don't like to follow ppl with stock photos of models for some reason. I like ppl who either use a real picture or some kind of logo. Makes them seem more real.

And then once I checked a few followers, there were some I really didn't get. Only 5 updates which seemed short and fake.

I follow nearly everyone that follows me (I double check profiles to make sure they aren't spammers!) and then if they tweet about absolutely nothing, such as posting nothing but news links, what song they're listening to (like blip.fm), or obvious spam messages.. I unfollow.
I don't think following a lot of people devalues you, but it does look funny if you're following 500 people and only 30 are following you.

I always follow anyone that follows me - but then if they start spamming, I unfollow - very simple! But I use TweetLater.com to handle the auto follows and to send a quick DM to my new followers. Just bein' polite!

I started a quick list of Twitter stuff I find useful - it's at my blog.

It is common to follow people that follow you but there is no rule.

I like to read the bio and tweets and follow if I would be interested in what they talk about.

If you don't auto follow, some will unfollow you for not following back.

Twitter should not be about who has the most followers. It is about sharing and interacting with others.

Another reason not to auto follow is that there is a limit of following 2000 users until you are followed by 2000. If you reach the limit you will have to unfollow someone before you can follow anyone else.

I recommend you use Tweepler (Tweepler.com) to help you manage who you follow.

You can also use Twitoria - How Many Twitter Friends Are You Really Following? to find out who you are following that have been inactive for a given amount of time if you need more people to unfollow to make room.

I DO NOT follow everyone. I follow folks that are working in areas of interest to me. I don't do "games" so I don't follow gamers who only chat about that type of thing, or Yoga instructors...

Any way, if it's not within my area of interest, I don't follow. I go for quality over quantity.

      • I personally do follow everyone back that follows me. I mean the more people you follow, then the more people will be impacted by your twits and the more people that will see your advertisements.

It is very easy to unfollow a spammer or someone whose tweets you don't want to receive.

Many IMers are interested in the reach of Twitter and want to play the numbers game.
But the ability to leverage the phenomenal growth of twitter is based largely on the quality of your tweets in terms of the value that it brings to your followers.

Remember to keep the "social" in your social media strategy- C'mon, do you Only talk about work, a new product launch and making money with your friends??

Value can be delivered on twitter by mixing up your tweet content with news of the day, humor, personal info and specific content that is of strong interest to your followers.

          Stay Sunny,

          Michelle

Follow the people who follow you. Because most likely they are in your field. But watch out for the spam bots that advertise things on ever tweet

From my personal experience you can save yourself a lot of time, just by reading their timeline and their profile. What do they talk about, what are their interests, look at their website - if they have one. Basically find out as much info as you can about anyone who tries to follow you.

Only then will you be able to make an informed judgement on whether to follow them or not.

    Hope this helps.
