Newbie looking for a bit of advice

First, let me state that I am brand-spanking-new to this. I know nothing. I have a very demanding full-time job that can, sometimes, take every waking minute of my day. The time I have to invest in learning to make money online is sporadic at best. However, I'm committed to spending as much time as I can manage to learning to do this. The goal is to make enough money online to support a comfortable life in the Philippines. I need to make $1500/mo. minimum to achieve that goal. I plan on keeping my current source of income for at least 5 more years, or until my online income surpasses it (which is unlikely to happen anytime soon).

Considering that my current job pays me plenty, I have more money than time to invest in my online-earnings education. Because of that, I'm considering a few training courses, or perhaps a mentor, or both. I'd rather invest the money than waste the time flailing around trying to figure out what to learn, in what order, how to apply it, etc. I need a guide to take out most of the guesswork. Can anyone tell me their experiences with a mentor, or with training courses (example: Matt Carter's courses)?

Can anyone offer any other advice to a newbie? I don't want to waste the money I have to invest on scams or crappy courses/mentor. What are some pitfalls I should look out for? Seriously, any advice is welcome and appreciated. I'm not trying to be lazy here. I'm willing to learn and do the work. I just want to maximize the effectiveness of my time spent learning.

Thanks for any and all helpful replies.

Keep this in mind before you Invest in a training program...

It must provide all the tools needed to promote ANY product, in ANY niche, to ANYONE, and from ANYWHERE in the world.

New strategies and systems need to evolve to keep up with the constant changes we experience online every day, week and month. The training MUST be constantly updated.

Not only does the system have to work, the leaders within that system have to be incredibly successful too. Proven systems have proven success stories. This may seem kind of obvious, but how many times have you been sold on a training program through an email message, but when you get to the training, there's no list building methods involved... strange hmmm.

24/7 support should be a given with any proven system, but if there's no community of like minded people within that system to help guide you through the obstacles you will inevitably face, then I would steer clear. Believe me, the best people to help you on your path to online success, are the ones who have already been through the training themselves. I don't want to hear from the experts who will obviously tell me the system works, I want to hear it from REAL people who are on the same journey that I am on, makes sense?

Proven systems should have one-to-one coaching from high earning leaders. There has to be a next level to aim for, and another level after that, and so on.

    Personalized coaching will cost:
    100s an hour
    Or
    1000s a month

    Group coaching will cost:
Several 100s a month at the minimum

Do you have this much to spare?

  • @dbounds, please take this the right way, but why the HE "double hockey sticks" would you want to get into IM?
I am not being negative here, but I really want you to answer that in your mind.
$1500 a month is more than doable, but you need to really pick a "method" and stick with it.
The challenge is there are several avenues in the IM market you can run down, and if your not careful you could jump down a rabbit hole, and we will never see you again.
I would suggest reading some more on this forum, get an idea of what direction you want to take, find the ppl in that niche that have consistant and update content and engage with them.
    Hope this helps some.

Do you have any clue of how you want to build your online business or are you looking for a complete business plan?

My point of saying that is you have to come up with your own plan. The warrior forum is good for helping you with questions on the best way to execute your plan.

From what little I know, I am very interested in affiliate marketing. That's probably the avenue I'd be most interested in, though that might be because it's the one I know the most about so far.

@retsced - That is great advice, thank you. Now to figure out how to find such a thing and recognize it as legitimate. Seems like it will be difficult to wade through the sea of less-than-stellar to find something like you describe...

@WeavingThoughts - No. I could probably afford a few hundred a month, but certainly not thousands or many, many hundreds. Obviously I will need a slightly less expensive option. It must be out there, since I'm fairly certain everyone successfully making a living doing this didn't spend that much. Obviously I need to maximize my time while remaining within my spending limitations. I wasn't trying to sound like I was a big-wig willing to throw money around willy-nilly. I simply make a good enough living to be able to throw SOME money at this to shorten my learning curve.

@paullrob - Thank you for the recommendation. I'll look into it.

@Intentional Marketing - I understand the question and your reason for asking it. It was taken well, and believe me, I have a wonderful and very motivating reason for wanting to do this. I appreciate your advice and I am surely doing some digging around the site. Seems like the more I dig, the more questions I realize I have.

@jamesrich1 - The best answer I have right now is that affiliate marketing looks very interesting to me, and if I can figure out the ins and outs of HOW it's done, I have no doubt that I am capable of doing it. The problem is the learning curve. I know just enough to know that I don't know ANYTHING. Finding a good guide that can kind of give me a step by step "learn this, learn that, do this, do that" would be a huge help.

Well, honestly, If you know nothing about IM whatsoever, I would suggest Chris Farrell Membership. It's 37$/m. You will learn basic stuff such as how to create your first website, get an auto responder and all this beginner stuff, but not more than that.

I actually wrote a review about his stuff - CHECK IT OUT

I'd go for a mentor or coach, and affiliate marketing can
    be easy enough.

You can learn it even with very little spare time. I learned
it while often putting in 16-18 hour days with the USAF,
and often falling asleep at my keyboard while studying.

Make sure that you pick a niche that is profitable and will
be profitable for a long time, ie.

    - Has lots of people who want the product or service
    - Has lots of people willing to pay for what you are going to sell
    - Has lots of people WILLING to pay for what you are going
    to sell

If you don't have much time outside the forum, I'd simply find a product you want to sell. Then buy a course on how to run ads. Solo ads, mailing lists, how to make them etc.

Everything is going to take some time, but for the busy lifestyle I'd probably focus on ads.

I bought solo ad secrets and I thought it was pretty good at a reasonable price.

So, yeah I would start with ads. UNLESS you really love to write, or you have a topic you are passionate about.

Also anything you can pick up to on how to run and value a business will be good.

Not sure if Derek Gehl will go to Philippines but you definitely want to learn from him! Google search "internet marketing" and his face will appear on the right side. That's how good he is!

If you really did that Google search, you might be wondering why I didn't recommend you to learn from the person above him, Mike Filsaime. I tell you why, because he is Derek's student! XD

That just prove that his coaching is superb until his student can even surpass him! Most importantly, Derek is a guy who enjoys making money online and teaching people how to do that.

I did the search and neither Derek nor Mike came up on page 1 or 2. Also, if Derek did come up, it wouldn't be all his doing; he inherited leadership of the already multimillion dollar business, Canada's "Internet Marketing Center" from his buddy Cory Rudle, who founded it, built it up, and then died suddenly in a racing car accident a few years ago. They came up in short tail make money online type keywords long before Derek took over.

In my opinion, you are much better off just joining the Warroom. Then you can pick from a variety of free courses (free once you pay for the $37 membership, which I believe is good for 20 years). There are literally thousands of dollars worth of courses and other resources like software that sell as WSOs, but are free for the taking in the Warroom; no better value for IMers can be found anywhere I know of.

I suggest getting a list building course such as Lee Murray's excellent "The White Hot List", which you can find for free in the Warroom. Follow that, get questions answered as you go, and you will be off and running. Nobody needs to spend hundreds or thousands a month to learn the basics.

Save your money for things like solo ads, which will produce a return; not just in knowledge, but in money.

One big caution about joining the Warroom; you can get lost, and/or overwhelmed with all the stuff in there. Try to just pick one course and follow it all the way through. I think you should start with list building, since it is the foundation of most successful online marketing businesses.

Buy an ad next time you want to do nothing but a blatant self promotion.
