Newsletter isn't converting - any ideas?

So I have a big site with tons of loyal traffic. 100k uniques/month.

I also have an email newsletter where people sign up and receive 10 days worth of auto-responders. Afterwards, they get an email with a discount on my ebook.

For whatever reason, nobody is buying the ebook (but the ebook does sell to regular visitors). How can I make my email people convert better? I don't think it's price. Maybe the offer isn't valuable enough? Or I've somehow attracted the wrong demographic? Or the demographic wasn't qualified and not yet ready to buy?

I'd appreciate any ideas on this. Maybe a new way of thinking!

I appreciate the help. Thank you guys!

Are your emails being opened? What is your open rate? What's your clickthrough rate? Let us know how many people are seeing the offer. The problem could be hardly anyone is opening the emails. That would then be a lack of copywriting skills issues. If people are opening but not clicking through that is also a copywriting issue. Storytelling gets people engaged. Shocking headlines works. If people are opening and clicking through to your sales page you probably want to hire a copywriter to enhance your sales page. My point is your issue is COPYWRITING.

      Thanks for the repy, James.

      open rate is 30%
      click-through rate is 10%
      conversion rate is 1%

The more I think about copywriting, the more I feel it may be the missing link! Do you have examples of copywriting you like?

There's a lot of factors here, starting with "does your ebook itself accurately target the needs of your site visitors?"

All the greatest copywriting in the world won't overcome a poorly targeted value proposition (at least not on a sustainable basis anyway).

Perhaps offer a free chapter as a lead in, it's what I'm doing this weekend. Hopefully it will up the sales a bit.

I'm guessing either one of 2 things is happening:

      1) They're getting tired of reading your emails and seeing your name after 10 days straight, or

      2) They've moved on to bigger and better things

You need to hit them with information NOW. Right when they sign up.

Instead of 10 days of content, put all of the best stuff into a "sandwich" page. So your autoresponder is set to single optin, and when they sign up, they go straight to a page on your website full of great content.

At the end, you pre-sell your discounted ebook.

BAM- just saved you from buying like $12837271 worth of WSOs.

Good idea, Rick! I think I should give the first chapter for free.

Justin, I think you're right. It sounds so obvious but I was an idiot not to have thought of it first.

Yep 10 days does sound like a bit of an overkill if your aim is to get them to buy your eBook. Even in product launches it's usually said you shouldn't go over 7 days as the prospects inner monster that's deeply craving your product begins to fizzle out and go back to sleep.

I'd say shorten it down, make it take less than 10 days to present your eBook.

When they opt in, take them directly to some sort of thank you page where you give them a bit of really good content and let them know they've made an excellent decision etc, then, at the end, just casually "let them know" that you have an eBook at the end, don't make a biggie of it - prospects could potentially be at their hottest right after they've opted in.

Make sure you always leave the carrot dangling in your emails. Have some sort of cliffhanger, so they are "forced" to open your next email. You want to get them in some sort of "Lost" mode. The series Lost. Leave them wanting more.

Make your emails engaging, tell a story, or one big story throughout your whole sequence and make sure you put in actionable content injected with personality.

Oh yeah, finally (should have been firstly), define your perfect customer as best as you can. It makes writing emails and creating anything for your business waaay easier.

      very good points, THANKS TIM!

I'll definitely decrease it to 2 emails after sign up. And work on story-telling.

Does your newsletter point to the final product (indirectly) throughout?

When it comes to the sale are they shocked to see that you want money for content or have you warmed them up affectively so they are trigger happy?

Many successful newsletters work at the 5-7 day window of opportunity. Also, is your newsletter just in text format? You might consider video, audio, mp3 to mix things up a bit...

With metrics can you see if the open rate is decreasing dramatically by day 7 onwards?

All worth checking through. Overall though you have a solid foundation for massive success.

My question is, are they even being delivered.

Sign up for your own list using your site email, gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc and see if they are even getting through.

Don't freak out when you discover delivery issues.

What are you offering them to signup in the first place?

If they are freebie seekers, your conversion will generally plummet.

What methods are you using to generate traffic to your website besides your autoresponder?

    Marcus:
    - The newsletter does point to the final product/s throughout. Although I could be doing a better job.
    - Thank you for the 5-7 day window of opportunity. I will re-design my efforts to fit within that time-frame.
    - It is dressed up a little but I certainly could offer a hidden youtube link.
    - The first 1-2 days has a 50% open rate and drops down to 35-40% over the last 2 days. So I figured this is a pretty low dropoff rate.

    - They're definitely being delivered. I subscribed to my own newsletter using several different email service providers.
    Thanks for the check-up.

    - I use SEO and youtube. My site is the dominant #1 site in its niche. Pretty much everyone within this activity has heard of my site.

    - I use free tips and updates as the means of getting them to subscribe. Many people would subscribe if only to get updates as soon as a new article is posted.
