About to do my first email marketing.

I just received an opt-in list from the manufacturer of the product I am selling on my website, and I am trying to find the best way to approach this email campaign.

The list I received is an opt-in list from the manufacturer from trade shows where they have shown their products. This opt-in list is not for my specific website, but it is for the specific products we sell. Does that fact effect how I should handle this email campaign? I don't want to piss any one off is I guess what I am getting at.

    How big is the list?

Since you received the list and didn't build it yourself, you're gonna get some spam complaints, so don't send it from your own domain.

    Hi JoMo,

I agree with eholmlund - sending mails to this list is, actually, spam. I would send them a very delicate e-mail with invitation to opt-in in my new list. And if they enroll - this would be a good not-spam list.

    I hopw that was helpful.

Why not write up an email, except make it come from someone representing the manufacturer?

Then THEY can "send" it. Tell your prospects right off the bat they're receiving this message because of the trade show registration. So they know what's what.

Then have them recommend YOUR product/or service with a link to your website, Or better yet, put together something free that would entice them to come check you out. Report, video, whatever. Then send them to a landing page from the email where they can opt into your list to get the freebie.

Obviously you don't want to take this approach without permission from the manufacturer. You'll need to get a real person to send it from (maybe somebody who was manning the booth at the show) and okay the copy with them first. But if you write it up, they will most likely be fine with it.

I do see your point, Bill. I was going to add a "get me off your list" link, but maybe the extra opt-in is a better idea.

eholmlund, what would be the best alternative for an email. Would people be likely to accept an email like this from a hotmail account, or is there another direction I should look?

what size is the list you are sending to?

Depending how your email is written (HTML or text) and what it contains inside it, there is more than a good chance that it will end up in the spam folders of your receipients, if sent from a hotmail account. JoMo can you give us a bit more info about what you are trying to do?

      Hi Jomo,

Has the manufacturer given the list to others, or have they given you exclusive rights to it? Are they mailing to it themselves or not?

Ideally, if they will go for it, you need some way of firstly mailing through them (IE in 'from me, in conjunction with manufacturer XYZ') and as mentioned, enticing them to opt in to your own list.

What do they want? Try giving some of it to them on condition they transfer across.
