All the good domains are already gone.

This is one of the biggest lies on the internet. That statement is as ridiculous as telling someone who wants to be a real estate broker "All the good houses are already gone."

Every single day, 70,000 to 80,000 domains expire and become available to register. Among them are HUNDREDS of very valuable domain names.

People go out of business.
People start projects and never follow through.
People die.
People lose interest.
People have no idea their domains are of value.
Domainers can't afford to renew their portfolios.

I could list a hundred more reasons, but the point is, MANY, MANY premium domains are available to you *every*single*day*. You just need to educate yourself on what is in demand, and register the domains that fill that demand.

Is it easy? NO! It's a royal pain to scour through 80,000 names on a daily basis. Is it worth it? Heck yeah!

I personally register many domains on a daily basis, for $10 and sell them for hundreds each. Some for thousands. Sold an expired domain last week for $2,700 (paid $10 for it).

There are MORE premium domains available to you right now than you could ever take advantage of.

Every single day I feel like a kid in a candy warehouse. There are FAR more quality domain names available to me every single day than I could ever take advantage of. I can barely scratch the surface.

STOP the lie. Great domains will ALWAYS be readily available. In the 9 years I've been doing this full time, I have never had a single day where there wasn't an over abundance of readily available premium domains.

Most of the people who spread that lie wouldn't know a good domain if it slapped them upside the head. lol.

... as an aside, there's also an abundance of really crappy domains. I keep seeing threads asking "How Much is This Domain Worth" with some fine examples of that.

I agree. We offer domain brokering and only represent domains with a market value of $10k+ (otherwise it's not worth our time). In a typical week, we have over 1,000 domains submitted to us with the registrants saying they want crazy $ for them when we'd not even pay registration fee for them.

I think part of the problem is that because anyone can REGISTER a domain name, they think that coming up with a GOOD domain name is easy. It's as much of a science as most areas of marketing.

In my opinion too many people buy domains who really don't have a clue what to do with them, or even if they do, they don't have the knowledge to do anything good with them.
This is why I personally Love JV's, If I can see the potential in a domain or an idea; I have the backing to make it happen. (not a sales pitch by the way i am swamped with work) here's a simple fact that is never discussed...

There are millions of businesses worldwide failing because they can't find customers.
There are millions of web developers failing because they can't find business customers who need to reach their target customers.
There are thousands of Internet Marketers failing because they can't find site/products to promote.

Crazy truth! millions failing because they don't know what each other can do.

So very true, Arran - the art of networking seems to have become a dirty word since network marketers have AMWAYed us to death

    Gene,

You're absolutely correct. Over the last several years, I have found 21 domains that fit my specific needs. Half of them were expired domains and I found them purely by accident. The biggest headache for me was the drudgery of looking for them.

I can't speak to the profitability of selling them, as I have kept them for my personal use.

Nice thread, I have a couple of questions though.

    1) What can be considered as a good worthy domain?
    2) Where can you get a quote for yours, or see a list of expired or for sale domains?

Good post, Gene. I think the problem isn't that all the good domains are taken, just that most of the ones that take little or no thinking or creativity are taken. Too many people want the easy way out and don't want to have to dig a little deeper or think more creatively.

      Good point!

I've never gotten into expired domains. If what I want is taken, then I go back to the drawing board to think of something new.

If you're using an acronym as a domain name, it can be difficult because the acronym as a domain name was probably taken long ago.

My mentor had a company whose acronym for the company name was GIA. Well, GIA is pretty common (for all types of businesses), so GIA.com was taken (of course!). Her company was a trade association, so she registered GIAconnect.com instead. It was a perfect fit because trade associations exist to connect their members with other members and resources that they need, as well government advocacy.

(She's since folded the company into a different one, so it no longer exists.)

Adding "connect" to the acronym was just perfect, probably even better than just GIA.com.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little creative thinking. And sometimes, you really don't have a better alternative and need to go to the secondary, expired domain name market.

I've never bought an expired domain name and had no idea where to go. So thanks for the tips!

Gene, I sent you a PM and dropped a copy in your contact at your blog prior to selling my first domain for $500. The reply wouldn't be necessary anymore.

Funny enough, I had argued with you in another thread almost over 3 weeks ago saying that domain flipping is hard or difficult (can't remember the exact but something along that line). Even though I said those words, domain flipping has been my passion since I first read about it in 2008. I kept going back and forth around it until this day and landed on website flipping but it didn't give me what I wanted. Not because it doesn't work, but because it wasn't the right thing to do at that time due to time constrain--work and school.

I had also downloaded your free guide long before that arguement but I guess I still didn't understand how to fit the whole puzzle into one piece.

When I finally did, with help of a Warrior who is also a nameproser, I found a domain and bought the .com this week's Monday and by yesterday(Friday), the buy agreed to pay $500. The deal is yet to be completed because the buyer is a very busy person, which is typical of most Americans.

I have sent him an email detailing how I can transfer the domain name and also get paid. So, hopefully by Monday next week, everything should have been done.

Over here in Nigeria, $500 is someone's monthly salary and I was over the moon yesterday. I will definitely make more than that next month.

I just want to a BIG thanks to you, warriors who often shared their testimony( that kept me going despite the series of failures), to the warriors who never get tired of motivating those wanting to give up( I almost did in 2010), to Allen who created this one BIG family. WE ARE WARRIORS!

NOTE: It wasn't easy to find that domain name. I spent over 10 hours digging.

I cant transfer the domain name to the buyer because the domain name is less than 60 days old. I asked that he gets an account at namecheap but he prefers to godaddy. I have explained to him why he should get the namecheap account but he said all their domain names are at godaddy and that they will continue to use godaddy.

jideofor - create a second account at the current registrar (NameCheap). Push the domain from your main account to the new account. Give the buyer the login for that account, and you're done. They are now in full ownership. If they want to transfer the domain to a different registrar, they can do so on their own, when the rules allow.

I don't understand why people don't put more time into discovering easily readable, brandable unregistered domains. Some of these names people come up with are ridiculous. I'm watching startups appear with the most nonsensical, unreadable b*llshit names. How about trying a little harder?

This year I registered Certsy.com for an identity certification website, Pholite.com for a photography app site, Payvin.com for a payment routing site, Pict.ly for a photography-themed URL shortener site. All readily available names, all pretty good and easy to read.

My advice? Avoid the trends. Cut words down to the minimum and experiment with different suffixes. There are plenty of good unregged domains out there. It also helps if you do an availability search with a registrar like Dotster (although I don't buy from them; overpriced), who lets you search again and again while stacking your results. This helps with brainstorming and quickly tweaking searches for acceptable alternates.

    Happy hunting!

Gene is absolutely right. We get domains every day in com/net/org without fail. You just have to know how to evaluate domains and tell the good from the bad, and then how to go about finding the good ones.

If you're buying to flip, then evaluate domains based on what your connections/buyers will buy. If you don't know, then ask them what they are looking for. If you have really strong connections in law for instance, you'll much more easily have steady sales and cashflow by focusing on law domains suiting their needs than randomly going after good domains.

I have an awesome domain, it's 3 years old and I am trying to sell it. I've tried to sell it on Flippa, but because I can't afford upgrades there, it gets lost in the shuffle. The site itself is a blog that I have tended to with loving care and the average time spent on the site is 8 Minutes 55 seconds. Guess I'm a pretty good writer, Do any of you have any ideas that I can try to get it sold? I'm not a flipper, I just do not have time anymore to keep writing since I am working 2 jobs. I am even considering using a pro to help me sell it. I think it would be an excellent domain for affiliate salespeople or teachers of marketing, though I do much more than that with the site. What is a girl to do? Thanks in advance.

How and where can you look to find these expiring domains?

Also, where do you sell them? On sites like Flippa? Or do you actively go out and look for other website owners which might want that domain name?

I cannot speak to how to find good domains (or sell them).

However this is usually a typical excuse.

You could take a reasonably good domain and get going today if you were so inclined (and change later if you found a better domain).

People don't do this. They wait for the perfect domain (and wait forever).
