What Are the Alternatives to Paypal for Online Merchant Accounts?

I think this is the most comprehensive list I've seen so far. Other than paypal, I'm familiar with Google Checkout and Moneybookers. I've tried these two before and everything went well.

I use AlertPay as well as Paypal.

I have had paypal for many years but do not trust them as they froze my account for no good reason.

I use moneybookers occasionally hower the best for me is alertpay as it is virtually world wide and you can use it with shopping carts or make your own payment buttons. Fees are reasonable

I dont trust paypal either and have moved a lot of my products onto clickbank who i do trust. Using them is a lot easier than apply for accounts with other well known merchants.

I have a true merchant account set up through my bank that I use. I got it for use with my offline business, but can also use it with my online work as well. I haven't subscribed to the additional services, but supposedly I can accept checks by phone, email, etc. and even do bank drafts.

I use PayPal normally and would keep that option on my site regardless because people seem to feel better when they see that PayPal logo...I know that the first time I saw the 2Checkout information I backed out of the site almost immediately - until I became more familiar with that system. Familiarity breeds a sense of trust - regardless of whether the merchant is trustworthy or not - people trust more when they're familiar with a system.

From the consumer side, PayPal is no better either. I purchased something from an online merchant, paid with PayPal, never got the product. I complained to PayPal, they said to contact the merchant - I had already done that. Eventually, the time expired to do anything through PayPal - even though I had been communicating with them during that time period. The eventual end was that I lost my money to a scam artist and got a bad taste in my mouth for PayPal.

As a business owner, I was using PayPal for my offline business, but after two transactions with the same company (a company - not an individual), PayPal informed me and the company that we could no longer transact business through PayPal. That's when I set up my merchant account. I was processing about $15,000 a week at the time and couldn't play around with PayPal. Subsequently processed about $70,000 over the next three weeks with my merchant account - had no problems.

Plus, with my merchant account, the money was in my bank account in about 24 to 48 hours - rather than the days and weeks that it took with PayPal...plus with my merchant account, the money went to my bank account automatically - I didn't have to do a thing. With PayPal, I had to check it every day, and when I saw the transaction in my PayPal account, THEN I had to request the money be transferred to my bank account. Too long of a process to be even remotely efficient.

I don't know anything about the alternative processors mentioned here, but I will definitely look into it for my customers. Thanks for the exhaustive list. Hope my comments are of value to someone.

Does anyone know how to take payment virtually?

In other words, our cart encrypts the sales order and we receive it, unencrypt it and punch the data into a physical terminal whilst we are travelling sometimes.

I want to be able to punch this data into a secure online payment facility instead.

(This will also be useful when we take orders whilst travelling on the road from show to shows).

Do any payment processors allow this or have this facility?

(Carrying a physical card processing machine around with us doesn't always work straight away, we have to have physical phone lines etc and it is a pain).

Contact your cell phone provider....they might be able to provide a service to accept payments....I know that mine does....

Be careful with some of those little known, just came out of no where payment processors. I would only trust my money in PayPal and the bigger companies. Many people want to save money and go with processors with lower fees but that's how they 'hook' you. I am not saying they cant be trusted, just be careful.

Remember Paysystems? Globill? All went out of business not too long after coming onto the scene.
