Are Using Sub Domains A Waste Of Time And Effort?

Lets say you already own a decent domain to sell a particular product but want to sell similar or related products as well. Would it be better to just use the same domain and create sub domains or to create an entirely different domain for each product you want to sell even if they are similar or related?

Suppose the domain is TheOrgasmReport.com your main product is something that helps men give women more frequent and better quality orgasms. Your secondary product is something that helps prevent premature ejaculation. And the third product allows for better quality and longer lasting erections. Would it be necessary to use independent domains for the other two products when they are oddly connected to the primary product in a way?

    Hello,

    technically speaking, it doesn't matter...

the only reason you would want to have separate domains is marketing/branding -- You want your domain name reflect as much as possible your product.

If you have any plans down the road to sell the website, I would not set it up on a sub-domain.
Outside of that, I've been able to rank those sites and sell off of them just as well as primary domains.

I use subdirectories and that works pretty well for me. I have an overall brand, and I create various products that fit under that brand without stretching too far.

Maybe if your main domain was something a little less specific but still in the overall niche market it might be a little easier to make new products fit.

Aren't sub domains easier to manage and update? Or are there plugins for minisites and auto syndication of the theme as well?

It would be better if you create each domain for each product if they are not different.

Sub domains always have some disadvantages and they are not liked by google as much as domains are liked. Only exception is blogger's subdomain. Google loves any blog in blogger platform and if it contain some good contents, it will definitely get some visitors from organic search results.

Sub domains makes your URL look relevant and professional. But it always isn't necessary depending on what you're trying to do.

If i were owning an "orgasm" course that was followed up by "love-making" or "relationship" products... i probably wouldn't create subdomains for them. I'd create and put them into my root directory.

It just depends upon what you're trying to accomplish. Keep in mind, a subdomain is generally considered a separate "domain" from the main domain where SEs are concerned.
