Word Press For Web Sites and 1 More Thing

I realize Word Press was created for blogging. However my question is this Is it a good platform to build a web site on. I'm thinking if so it would sure building one a breeze I would think.

Currently I have a blogger blog that targets a very small niche that I have for philanthropic purposes that I do not indend on trwying to make money off of on blogger and the way I have it set up its appearance is more like that of a non-blog web site. Sorry I realise my discription is really showing my ingnorance about these things.

So with what I've read about wordpress and some sites I've seen built on or in whichever is correct the WP platform function more web site like then blog like even then my blogger blog. So anyway would wordpress be a good platform for a IM inche nweb site that is not meant to be a blog if that makes sense.

Secondly where I work a guy told me that he has to sites up on the same topic, happens to be wedding photography, both are nearly identical and have links pointing to each other he claimes this helps his search engine rankings, because they have different hosts and as a result IP addresses is this a good strategy or would things like squiddo lenses and such accomplish the same thing for free?

Well I hope I made sense. Its kind of late for me and I should be in bed goodnight everyone.

I agree, you can go either way with wordpress, either blog or website. I personally don't build websites from scratch any more, so much easier to use word press.

On your second question, yes that should work if they are on different hosts and different IP's. Though you might not get too much if your only talking a site or two, but they would be more related. I personally would rather use like you mentioned, social sites, like squidoo, they are more apt to rank higher, quicker and should provide you with more link power.

I have used wordpress now for a couple of sites and find it so much easier. At the moment I don't think I'll turn back to building a website unless it's just a squeeze page of course.

I am now in the process of using wordpress for review sites - google apparently really like wordpress.

Check out the new http://www.flexibilitytheme.com- it rocks for squeeze pages!

As far as using WP for websites - you can remove everything from comments to dates and author notes in the theme editor, so that you remove everything that looks like a blog, yet still keep the ease of content management of WP.

I would say go with wordpress. It is very easy to set up and you don't have to go through the techy html, css and all those stuff. Moreover the search engines love them.

Thanks everyone for your replies I think I'll probably go the wordpress route then as I have enough not extensive but enough experience in dealing with blog platforms to build a really nice looking web site I think. The parts that I need to learn are th SEO and other things critial to successful IM.

Wordpress all the way. My web-building life is now so much easier. The other cool thing I dig about Wordpress is the ability to add users so you can turn the site over to someone and they can easily add new content.

Like everyone said...Wordpress all the way.

As for your second question...yes, linking those sites together will help, but they should be hosted with different companies with different IPs...

As for seo...one of the great things about Wordpress is all the great plugins. Platinum SEO is a great plugin to help you get started in this area...then start making keyword related posts....and start getting backlinks...

You've gotten some great answers so I thought I'd chime in from a publisher's perspective.

I've used Wordpress for my personal blog, my professional site and now the online magazine I've created. I decided to go with Wordpress because I can add contributors and authors and give them certain permissions. I also like the fact that I can update my twitter stream automatically whenever new content is posted.

I think Wordpress is perfect for anyone who wants to take their site to the next level but has minimal technical experience. I know I'm not very tech savvy but I have enough knowledge to get in and play around with the site (and if I break something, I have a great tech adviser helping me!)

Also, since you mentioned SEO, wordpress even supports numerous plugins that will make your SEO implementation much easier. At this point, I don't even bother with Blogger anymore (where I started out).

    Good luck!

another vote for wordpress here. Other than being really simple to use, SEO is so easy with a good SEO plugin. From my experience, Google loves how Wordpress lays out sites. Be sure to change permalinks though.

If you just want a plain html page, go for plain html, it's faster.

If you need a website, go with wordpress (+few plugins and a nice theme) and you'll have an optimized website in few minutes.
