Can anyone tell me why my website bombed?!

My niche was fitness...and man I was busting my ass writing articles and it just never took. I never got comments I never got subscribers. Why did it bomb? I'd post my site here but there seems to be some rule about putting links up here.

But I'll post it anyways and face the repercussions if there are any I guess. fitnessofthegods.com. And no this isn't some shameless promotion of my site so hopefully nobody takes it that way.

And yes I'm aware there hasn't been new content but I'm in school and it takes a long time to write quality content.

Well, first impressions - not meant to be harsh, but it's the truth.

No EMD, so that's harder for the search engines to find.

The floating "share" button sits right above your main logo on the homepage when I load the page, so I can't even read the title of your page, nor the subheadline, and that looks pretty unprofessional.

The other first thing I see is a huge ad for an ebook which, to someone like me, screams spammy and I want to click away.

And the first thing I see on the right side is a huge sign-up box. But I don't know what kind of updates I'm signing up for, nor any reason why I should sign up, so it's likely that I wouldn't.

harsh is good. I love criticism. It's good to get someone who doesn't have tunnel vision like I have had to look at it and give me some input. And how much of an impact does an EMD make? Does it really make that big of a difference?

Not in the past, but with the 9/28/2012 EMD update, it may now.

I know some serious "white hatters" that took it on the chin with keywords in their domains.

I'm on a fast connection and it didn't load fast enough for me to wait on it.

            BIG RED FLAG.

How much traffic were you getting to the site and how long was the average visit time?

Well miraculously I am ranked in alexa. I mean when I actually write articles I get a boost of traffic for sure. As of now I get 40 - 90 uniques a day. But when I write a new article it can spike to around 150 - 250.

Damn my site is loading slow. I'm in the process now of deleting every plugin I got on there.

With how shitty the site is I'm surprised it's ranked in alexa actually...

Well, as of the last three days, Google engineers alluded to such:

Google EMD Update Appears To Have Had A Substantial Impact | WebProNews

I honestly don't think you are at risk really.

Keywords are terms like "how to get fit" or "how to lose weight" or "how to get ripped abs" ... not "fitness of the gods" ... that's not a search term.

Actually, that might actually be brandable.

I say stick with it, but definitely get a professional looking theme.

Additionally, don't forget about traditional advertising. Find a great affiliate product and pitch it on the site. Then print our 100 flyers and post them around campus...if they'll let you.

Marketing is more than just websites. Some of your best traffic will come from offline...trust me.

Well, my site is not necessarily attractive, but for a Thesis theme, that is pretty horrid looking.

You need a nice looking fitness theme. Search around. There are nicer looking ones.

Check this out: Fitness WordPress Themes

You may have to pay for one, but its well worth it...

Definately everything GobBluth noted - especially the not knowing what you are signing up for.

I would also invest the ~40 odd dollars in a professional theme from somewhere like themeforest etc, will make it look 100x more attractive with almost no effort.

No ... it doesn't look ok. The theme is awful. Unless I really, really wanted to read your articles, I couldn't guess why I'd be there. I don't see anything for sale ... no call to action of any sort. No reason why I'd want to sign up. You need a much better theme and more interesting layout and put your list form in the sidebar fairly close to the top with a real reason why someone would want to be on the list. If there's an ebook, I didn't see it. Black isn't a good color for a site, contrary to some people's belief. It's never really been a good color for a site. You need a sports/health looking theme and black text on a white background has always been the most readable.

And you got all that broken code under those images. Looks awful. Fix it or get rid of it.

First impressions are very important. Yo site is ugly, it's ugly, yo site is goddamn ugly. Seriously though. It took forever for the website to load. It's very confusing. The text is hard to read. When the website finally loads, I have no idea where to look. Everything seems scattered, it needs to be clean and simple. With so many other great websites in this niche, I see no reason why anyone would stick around,

It's not all bad though. A few simple tweaks here and there will make a big difference. Your site should be attractive to the eye and your content must be of a high quality. I didn't read the content so I have no idea whether it's quality or not. You see the problem there? If people are hitting that back button before they even read the content, you really are wasting your time. Make the site look more professional and your content equally so.

Oh yeah, I hate that bloody floating button

Apparently, I didn't see the site until you unloaded the plugins. It loaded fine for me. Others have touched on the main points I would have made, but one I didn't see mentioned is your categories. They make no sense. Some of them match post titles.

Just what is a visitor supposed to do when they get there? Read the article? Click on Awesome Images, a link that points to stuff that's completely unrelated?

People don't want to have to think. They want direction. Did it ever occur to you to put some kind of compelling headline up there to give them direction? The site is screaming amateur all over the place. I didn't read any of the content because there were no teasers even suggesting I should. Even the article title on the home page is boring.

You might have a lot of great stuff there but no one is going to know unless you showcase it better. Fixing this might be as simple as formatting what you have better.

One more thing. In the OP you call fitness a niche. It's not a niche at all. It's a multi-billion dollar mega market. When I point this out people will often say, "well, you know what I mean." No, I don't. People are here all day long saying they're doing everything right and still failing while many don't even know the difference between a huge market and a small subset of that market. If you're going to be successful it might be wise to actually know what you're talking about on this level. Otherwise people won't take you seriously. Good luck.

well, in another life I used to bodybuild

Content I would say is ok, BUT lol
Focus more on the How To's

As far as look it could be wider and like everyone else has said it needs direction.

Oh btw you mentioning the ebook right at the start was Cheesy and unprofessional.
Create an add for the ebook probably a good place would be the right side near the top.

I would also add some affiliate products to the page.

Like another poster said overkill with all the pictures.

What would be nice is if you wrote a how to do certain exercises and then added pictures showing how to do the exercises.

Don't want to bombard you but start with the content.
Then work on the look and direction.

Why is there a picture of a chick in lingerie there in the top piece? Yeah, I know...sex sells. I don't see any relevance at all to the article, though, unless I missed it all in there. Will weight training get you chicks? Is that why you're not getting rest? Try to use relevant pics to enhance the story.

Also, if you are going to use dates, republish the ones on the first page or write new ones. At this point the dates are from August. I'm going to figure this site isn't being updated and lose interest, possibly.

First these are just my personal opinions so you should take them with a grain of salt.

Second, I don't like pages that require me to scroll down more than two screens--yours has twelve screens which is far too many for my taste. Put those articles on below the first article and link them. It will allow your page to load even faster as well. I had no trouble loading your page so I think its much better now that you removed your plugins.

Third, you have exposed html/css code out in the open, right under the picture on your home page for people to link to your page. This is bad for two reasons, one, non-tech types might assume this is some type of error and navigate away from the page. Two,
exposed code makes a page look unprofessional and unfinished just like exposed dry wall would in a brick and mortar store.

Remove this code immediately--if you want to keep, fine, although I wouldn't keep it on your home or landing page, but if you do keep it, label it in English and link to it.

Fourth, I think pictures should be used sparingly and linked. Why? because some people still have slow connections like (gulp!) dial-up so you should try and keep your opening page as clean and minimal code so it will load for the tech laggards out there still trapped in the analog 90's. So I would remove or link to the picture on the front page.

I agree with the everyone who said the page lacks direction but I'm not total in love with idea of every opening page immediately trying to get my email address so you can build up a list. (Hi. Welcome to My Page...Want the secret to eternal happiness and life??? Just give me your name and email address here and I'll send you my free ebook/video/whatever.......that gets on my nerves at times but a lot of IMers swear by it so I could be wrong.)

That's not say I don't like lists but you don't have to do it immediately as soon as the person hits your web page, but good page design has obvious visual queues which I don't see much of on your page. Examples of this are underlined hyperlinks or different font sizes to draw the attention just like on printed materials like newspapers or magazines.

I recommend a site like Onextrapixel - Web Design & Development Online Magazine or just search for some good web design sites in google or bing to get some insight on approaching your site from the perspective of the visitor as well as to get some basic design ideas and take advantage of research that has been done on user experience.

Quick Tip: Tell 'em what you have for them. Tell 'em why they need it. Tell 'em what to do now.

I'm sure an adustment here and there, ur site will stand out.. You know what? I'll keep visiting your site to give support. I'm a health junkie anyway.. I lost 70 pds.. Now with a sixer pack baby.. P90X man and some Insanity.

I just tried your site it loads faster. However below some of the pictures is text that looks like bad links or photos.

I would see if you can edit those out. Go to the post and hit edit,Do a preview first and save your work. If it disappears hit the Update button. That would look cleaner. Also get rid of all the black you site looks dull.

Keep tweaking it and it will improve and take the BitDotBotcom. advice and try another theme. Becarful when you switch you do not want to loose all the information you have.

I've spent the last 59 months building 412 MFA sites. Each site averages 8 cents per day...I said average, some make up to 17 cents per day, PASSIVE INCOME! This income allows me to live comfortably and buy ANY flavor Jolly Rancher or Skittles I desire. Don't give in to fear, it CAN be done!

        Kent ,

I am going to tell you to try something a little out of the box.Speak to your mum or a friend who is non techie , perhaps even someone who is into fitness but not into computers.Ask them to visit the site whilst you watch , perhaps dont even let them know it is your site and watch how they interact with it.Listen to and note any comments they make as they will be your main audience and even people in here has prejudices and ideas whether we like it or not.

Try to think about what the reader wants , some people are very precious of their email address so you need to force them to give it to you but offering something they really really want.

Finally congratulations on your articles and on having the guts to post on here, and the positive way you are taking the criticism. You have definitely got the right mentality to do well , so just keep it going

          Good advice!

Keep up the good attitude with all the criticism coming your way. Few if any get it right the first time. We are all learning, tweaking, adjusting....

Do get rid of the girl in the negligee - has nothing to do with your site.

I don't mean to sound overly abrasive, but the site just looks like a common hack site - kind of trashy looking. You need to use a different theme without a doubt. Hard to take the site seriously.

I didnt read all the comments in the thread so forgive me if Im repeating what others said .. but that theme is not so good. the content portion is far to small .. who wants to read a website that is basically 550px wide?? The far left column has nothing in it but a single button .. such a waste of space. Better to have a two column theme.

Also you have the code highlighted to embed the image .. but no description of what thats for or why I would want to do this. Actually I dont see why anyone would want to do that anyway. Also the code itself is wrong. There is an empty <div></div> with no content .. makes no sense.

Your footer is not centered and it has the powered by wordpress message on it (indicating it was a free theme) .. to me this just looks like you were to cheap to buy a theme.

because you are not offering quality advice on fitness, that's the truth. it is harsh go to fitnessblackbook.com and see how a pro does it.

      @OP
The template on the above referenced site is a bit plain, but normal for a lot of sites and this is what you want your site to be patterned after. It doesn't have to be the same kind of plain template. You can do something different, but there's no doubt in anyone's mind what he wants you to do when you visit the site and that is ... buy his ebooks.

I didn't read and compare content. I'll just assume that you put enough effort into unique content that you have a site there that could draw traffic.
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7089898].message }}
  • You've created a virtually empty site with a poor design and what, maybe 20 articles and 0 backlinks?

The site DID NOT BOMB AT ALL. It didn't even launch.

    You can't get rich online doing stuff half-assed. That's a half-assed website.

You need to put some serious time, energy and effort into it and create something people actually want to read and visit. Otherwise, you're just fooling yourself.

What can you do to improve?

    1) Write more articles and fix your formatting / html errors in your posts.

    2) Create site navigation using your top panel bar and sidebar

    3) New theme/layout/feel of the site

    4) Start guest blogging to get backlinks

    5) Take this seriously if you want to make money

Ask people you know in real life, who aren't big on the internet or into internet marketing (friends and family) to have a look at your site and give honest feedback about the layout, design, content etc. Should give you a fairly unbiased review of how your website is.

Does your license for the photos allow you to redistribute them? You do have a license to use the photos, right? You didn't just grab them off Google images?

If you boosted the images from the wrong source, and compounded the error by showing that embed code, having the site bomb could be a blessing in disguise or the least of your worries...

I know a lot of people here have focused on the design of the site and whatnot but don't forget about branding yourself and putting yourself out there to build an audience.

The more people identify with you and want to know you, become like you, and achieve what you have achieved, the more that you'll get comments and subscribers. Though it's a completely different niche, look at the success of the mommy blogs out there. These are women who are branding themselves, building relationships, and as a result, being targeted by large companies to review products, making them some sweet profits.

Don't be afraid to become the face of your business. This will help a lot with the engagement on your blog.

Your pictures are linking to other large and well known fitness sites. This is just directing people to better sties, once they get there they won't come back! The images you have chosen are pretty awful too, they sort of weird me out and just make me want to leave as soon as possible.
