Would like to move away from SEO and into.. Media buys or some kind of paid traffic but need advice

Hi guys,

I`ve once again been hit by the latest update but need to thank my lucky stars that my number one performing site was left unharmed !

Anyway i have a old site that was hit hard by Panda and Penquin last Xmas it was a fitness/bodybuilding supplement site and did really well in its hay day like $1200 per month

This site still does around $150 a month because its still ranked high on yahoo and bing infact i checked yesterday it number one for the keyword on both sites

And i was looking at the site and remembered how much hard work i put into it and really how good it still looks i mean its got affiliate links all over it but still holds some good info and it used to make money

Then i started to think about why the hell have i just dropped it i mean it used to make me good money and just because its not in googles search anymore why have i just forgotten about it

Why dont i put a banner on someones site ie media buys and then i remember its because i dont know how to work out conversions ect

am i just lazy ? because i cannot get my head around how many clicks to make and sale and if it takes that many clicks i can afford to buy so many impressions because i know for every..... ahhh

I really think its one of the problems alot of marketers are having they keep working for google because its more stright forward to see your page ranking in the serps then it is to work out conversions and impressions

So guys i need your help , i want to try some sort of paid traffic maybe get a homemade text banner on a site but...

where do i start how do i work out conversions ect ect .. is it difficult or am i just being lazy ??

Pls advise

Jim

I would look at sites like buysellads.com, great site for finding banner spots.

I think people tend to under estimate the value of traditional advertising. Start with some web ads, see if it works out, buysellads is great because they have a lot of niche sites that are 10-30 bucks to put a ad on, try a few of them only keep the ones converting good, rinse and repeat.

You can also have paris hilton send a tweet for you for x amount of dollars.

Exactly what Google wants, go to adword.. You will be all over the world in 5min and make money from day 1.

Then on a second thought, why give up on your penalized site when it's just an algo thing. Hi Jim,

Glad to see you getting back up swinging

I've stopped kissing Google's royal fanny months ago. I feel so free! lol

You're right, just because your site got slapped doesn't mean it doesn't have the same money making power it had before.

Find sites that get traffic that are related to your niche.

    See if they advertise.

    Test.

    Done.

I found a nifty little trick where you use adwords as a temporary measure of which sites and which banners perform well for your site. You look at how well the banners convert on each site, and if they're good enough you contact the webmaster directly and ask to put a banner on their site paying on a monthly basis, and less than what you pay but more than what they get with adwords.

To start here is some things that you can do.

Go to google and type in your niche +forums, and +blogs.

Then take the top results that show up and do 2 things.

    1) look on their sites to see if they have banner ads and text ads.
You can either contact them directly and work out a deal, or use a company like Buysellads

    2) Run those sites through Quantcast.com.
Quantcast will tell you what size banner ads you can use on those sites, and it will also recommend others sites like the ones you found that you can also put ads on.

As for testing and tracking you can use Hitsconnect.com

You can track all your banner ads on multiple sites, and you can do ad rotating so when you are split testing your ads to find out which one converts the best.

You can also try out hypertracker.com
I haven't used them yet but I have heard that they are really good.

Joe Lavery has a product that teaches alot about testing, tracking and split-testing. It was $19 (WSO) but now it $99.

I know that seems high, but this guy is amazing! And if you think about it, making just one change can get you that $99 back very quickly.

EDIT: Also for Hitsconnect you can test them out for free.

I have honestly made more money with adwords then I have ever with seo, once you have gotten good at adwords, you will never look back. You usually need to have a decent bankroll to get started, but that is how the game is played

Facebook isn't my thing, I hate social media with a passion (I feel like such a dinosaur) but have you ever considered making a Facebook fan page and promoting the site through Facebook?

There's tons of information (WSO's) on doing this. Just a thought.

If you want to venture in paid traffic then I suggest you go with POF. Got a decent volume plus their targeting platform is crazy and affiliate friendly.

Try adf.ly Very cheap. BUT here's a warning: you can't be lazy. Spend in $10 batches but study how effective your landing pages are. Make sure you keep what works and throw away what doesn't work. For the ones that work, keep tweaking until you get the best ROI.

Moving from SEO to large scale media buying is like jumping out of the kiddie pool and into the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Wrapping your head around impressions, ctr, conversion rate, etc. is not as hard as you think it is.

If you have the funds...start off by measuring money in and money out. At the end of the day, that's all that matters.

When you create a banner, you are usually paying using a CPM model and not a CPC model. CPM is cost per one thousand impressions. You are paying a fixed rate for the traffic you receive. This is where you want to increase your CTR (click through rate) for your banner. The more clicks you get per one thousand impressions, the cheaper you are paying for each click.

      Example:
If I am paying $1 for 1000 impressions and I get 1 click. I paid $1 for that click
If I am paying $1 for 1000 impressions and I get 10 clicks, I paid 10 cents for those clicks.

It can get much more complicated, but you have to start small first. PM if you have any more questions.

Good points but the answer to the concerns you raised is SIMPLE. Start with 1 traffic source and start small. Keep testing and optimizing until the ROI target is met. If it can't be met, move on to traffic source 2. No need to write off paid traffic as a whole. The key is to take small bites

I usually ask the site owners if they can give me 2-3 days trial before I decide to place paid banner on their sites. I just tell them I want to test the conversion first.

It's not difficult. There are even calculators online that will do it for you.
    Conversion Rate Calculator - Bplans

Your site already has a history of sales, so once you figure out your conversion rate, you should have a pretty good idea about what you should pay for traffic.

The biggest mistake I made was waiting to get into paid traffic.

Once you have found a campaign that works, your revenue covers the cost of entry anyway.

Set money aside that you are willing to lose and DON'T GET EMOTIONAL about it.
Your are just gathering data. I still struggle with getting emotional at times. lol When I'm firing on all cylinders I have a huge adrenaline rush. When things slow down, I get annoyed...heh.

Personally, i'd start with Bingads (aka microsoft adcenter), focus on targeting only exact keywords and tweak it from there... you'll probably lose a bit of money while tweaking and optimizing... but it's still a lot cheaper than google adwords

Have a look back when your blog was making $1500 per month and see how many unique visitors per day you were getting and how many sales per day you were getting this will give you some perspective on how many clicks (visits) you need to get to make a sale and from there you can monetize bids.

    yes test and test.

I use buy n sell ads, and choose

Just do simple research to find some sort of marketplace that may suit your individual niche

    2. I do not promote heavy gravity products. Just pick unique product that does solve a problem with a good sales page.

    3. Sometime I promote weight loss also. This is a good niche that can get good conversions.

    4. I prefer to buy 300x250 banner than other size, because it have higher CTR.

    5. In the banner, just use text ads. It has higher CTR than fancy graphic banner.

Maybe you could try this, as a test. Most give up on media buying, but it comes with a lot of testing and the rewards can be quite good. :-)

Solid advice. People can do this for ALL cheap sources of traffic. Link redirection/url shortening traffic can definitely be approached from this perspective. No different from taking out many cheap solo ads and PURIFYING their traffic by recruiting them to a clean list.

Advertise on Facebook, it is still quite affordable. Or buy solo ads from website like safe-swaps.com and buysellads.com. A lot of testing need to be done to see which method works better. You have to try it yourself only then you'll understand better. One man's meat is another man's poison. Method that works for you might not work for others and vice versa.

    All the best!
