Totally disheartened with PAYPAL - with holds my cash - what should i do?

I got this issue with paypal. I used my brother's name when I set up an account because I didn't have a card at that time. I got some money to the said account though it hasn't been verified.

What happened is I tried to edit stuffs - add additional email ads and bank accounts.

what I didn't know from the beginning is that I could not send any money with an unverified account. I thought I just couldn't withdraw to a bank account. what I did was I tried to send the money ($200+) to another friend's paypal verified account. BUT, I couldn't do so since the account I used was still unverified. The money's trapped in there.

I have been contacting paypal since then, asking them to help me out. And so, I tried to urge my brother to get a debit card, which he was able to do so. But when I got back to paypal, they suddenly LIMITED the account!

Maybe because I tried to send some money out the last time - this was what I thought. The paypal representative advised to get a card to verify the account and so WE DID. After that, the account was verified BUT STILL LIMITED.

The next thing, I uploaded some documents for proof of address. After a day, I received an email that they've denied the appeal and they're closing the account! If there's any balance, they'll withhold it for 180 DAYS!

Seriously?! I have been contacting paypal for the whole duration of the matter. It has been 2 weeks! We tried to get a card, got the account verified, and now it's still limited, and they're with holding my money!

Totally disheartening! I have been trying to ask for help. I have been transparent with them with the whole situation and they just kept on sending auto responses and stuffs like that.

The resolution center doesn't show anything in there except for the uploaded files - no indications of how I could make an appeal to lift the limits.

What should I do? Like everybody else, I need money. I got bills to pay. I live outside the US, so that amount in there is pretty much decent to have some bills paid.

Paypal hasn't been responding appropriately. They're sending much autoresponses (totally garbage), and when they do respond, they info is not that satisfying.

What should I do? Should I just wait for 6 months? Is there someone else out there who experienced the same? Do you think I can still make an appeal in lifting the limits?

Hoping to hear from you guys.

I have been using paypal for years. Your account is not verified. That is your answer. Get your accaount verified. Second, if you log into your account and click contact. You will be given a pin number and you can call the 800 number. I have never had to wait more than a few minutes for someone to come on the line and help me.

As agmccall said get your account verified and that should solve your problem.

Now if the account is limited then login and do exactly what they tell you to do. I was deployed when I got my PayPal account which of course was limited and all I had to do was send them proof of my address, then they sent me a document with a pass code on it and I had to input the pass code and then the limitation on my account was lifted

Thanks! I did upload proof of address last night. The problem is that I got an email earlier today that they denied the appeal. They're holding my money for 180 days.

While I understand your predicament, this is exactly why the whole limited account thing happens in most situations. You were NOT transparent from the start. From your story - you started with a lie. Liars are generally considered dishonest and dishonesty is a pretty good reason for getting an account limited.

I know I understand where this is coming from. The last thing I want to hear is this. BACK THEN, I could not set up an account under my name since I didn't have a BANK ACCOUNT and my brother had and so I created an account under his name WITH HIS PERMISSION. The problem was that he didn't have a CREDIT CARD for verification. I might have used another name but I did not cheat or steal money online.

      Don't be too judgmental please.

What I would do is create a new account with your own name and get it verified. Let that account hit the 6 month mark, withdraw the money, and then try to get it closed (might not even be possible). That would let your brother be able to use Paypal if he ever wanted to on his own and get you an account this is more honest than the one you already started.

Hello! Thank you. I appreciate this kind response. I know and I understand the mistake I did here. People can be too judgmental, you know.

Anyway, AFTER EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED, I did create a new account under my name. I got it verified - with bank account and credit card.

My problem now is that the money is trapped in the account named under my brother.

So, I just have to let them hold onto it for 6 months then..? How do you get to withdraw the money?

Yes, I intend to close the account the moment I get the money withdrawn.

        Hi XenG,

At this stage you may need to contact the government body that is responsible for business laws in your state or country. I don't know your location, but here in Australia it is the Department Of Fair Trading. If you make a complaint you should hopefully get your money back a lot sooner. (Paypal cannot enforce their TOS if what they are doing is illegal.)

        Regarding your new account:

As you now realise, Paypal has strict anti-fraud measures. Amongst other things, they monitor and use permanent flash cookies (stored on your computer), your machine id (mac), ip address, modem id? (I'm guessing), not to mention name, card/account numbers, address, etc.

If they connect anything used on your old account with your new, then you will get the new one banned too. I'm not sure how they will send you the money but you may need to use your brother's address, bank account and/or computer for that, in order to keep everything completely separate.

PS - I am assuming that you have exhausted all avenues with Paypal, but if not, I would first continue trying to resolve it via phone. No matter how frustrated you get, don't ever lose your cool, be rude, or threaten them though, because that will get you nowhere fast.

So basically you screwed around with Paypal and it caught up with you? These posts still amaze me. Majority of the people who have issues with Paypal have caused the problems themselves -- whether intentional or not does NOT matter.

You made the first mistake by setting up your account using someone else's name. If I were Paypal I would ban you to. If you are willing to mislead them about that then what else are you willing to mislead them with. That's what they would be thinking.

Basically this is no surprise to me. Move on and in the future follow the rules or suffer the consequences.

Easy for you to say, really! I didn't know much about money transactions online and paypal was recommended to me. I just didn't have any BANK ACCOUNT to begin with. Besides, I got my brother's permission. If you have some problem with that, fine!

I know the mistake I've done that's why I am asking for some thoughts.

You really need to understand how paypal works, they are really hardline. A google search will uncover a couple of really well researched guides on how to avoid and possibly get out of trouble with papal. There's even a WSO or two on the subject.

paypal/ebay/Google/Amazon....arrogant companies with canned response. Ban quick and simply do not have the resources (inclination) to go over individual cases. It's what drives me insane online. We are treated like crooks until proven otherwise (even then they aren't interested) NEVER build any buisness that relies on them

    User Agreement of PayPal Services

1.4 Beneficial Owner. You must be the beneficial owner of the Account, and conduct business only on behalf of yourself.
So if they havent closed your account, they're being nice. You just have to live with it IMHO
And lessons learned: Read ToS and other Agreements carefully beforehand.

First rule you broke is, never use another person name (can be your father mother or anyone), it is against the monetary law for most countries I know.

Next, make sure you are of age to open a paypal? Under the TOS, you have to be above 18? If not, you are committing a fraud.

Since you are already in trouble, find ways to make more money for sorting out your bills. It is highly unlikely you'll be getting the money they are holding before the six months are up.

Roll up your sleeves and do something instead of hoping Paypal will reconsider their decision.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I'll be waiting for 180 days to get my money. That's all I could do for, i guess, breaking some rules. My bad. You don't have to be too harsh on it. Anyway, thanks again.

      Hey XenG.
Glad to hear that you finally decided to "move on".
And about people being rude and harsh.
That's the way it is on the net, moreover if you break rules and you complain about being treated "unfairly" while you have treated what you deem as the unfair treatment provider unfairly in the first place.
If you can start to live with it, then you're on your way up.

And read and oblige to ToS for god sake. It will do you good in the long run...

We are not being harsh we are simply stating the facts.

You broke their user agreement and then asked for advice on how to fix things.

      Simple.

Don't break their user agreement in the first place.

Paypal is becoming the largest scam platform available, I would honestly looking for a different one for the near future. Honestly, I could make a $200 payment on something and get a refund within 3 days. The way they operate is kind is a joke. I have used it for more than 4 years and all I have had was issues. But yet I stuck with it because they are the largest platform that exist for payments.

The same goes for eBay. That website has really disappointed me over the past year here. They raised fees, and continue on planning to raise more in the future. It is hurting small businesses that use it and people who made a living at one time can't.

That is why eBay and Paypal are partners in crime.

It's called inflation, you can't expect them to have the same fees forever can you? Also, if you hate PayPal and eBay so much why are you still using them?
