How To Find The Right Domain Name

I am thinking about setting up three more websites/domain names..

1) For A membership site

2) For A clickbank Review blog site

3) For my own product.. That I will do at a later stage....

I am wondering if there is any special research techiniques used for getting the right domain name?? Or do you just pick one that you like and hope that it is still available?

    Domain Extensions...

    - .COM is usually the best, especially if it's for the primary website of your business
    - .ORG can be beneficial in gaining trust, and may be preferable for some information and service oriented websites.
    - Country-specific extensions (ex. .CA, .IN, .JP) can be advantageous if you're marketing exclusively to a niche within a certain country.

While domains consisting of "made up" words can become popular (ie. ebay.com, Xanga.com, Bebo.com, etc.), a more straight-forward approach is better for informational websites.

The domain should concisely describe WHAT the site is all about.

Consider adding a word, thinking locally, or making it personal

Generally avoid superlatives such as 'best', 'top', and 'number 1′. (Can hurt your credibility and cause problems with PPC advertising)

Use an adjective. I often use an adjective as the first word of a domain name.

    What about hyphens?

In general, I would prefer a domain with no hyphens. It's debatable, but hyphens may create a visual advantage in some cases for SEO and PPC. However, it also makes the domain harder to remember, and more difficult to say out loud.

Don't use intentional misspellings. You can use misspelled domains to capture traffic, but you should NOT build a full fledged site on one. (There are exceptions, like Flickr.com, but you are probably not the exception. Misspellings look bad)

Don't use abbreviations, unless it's VERY well known.

Don't use numbers (digits), unless you have a really good reason.

Don't make it too long. Aim for 2 or 3 words, and no more than 4 words.

    Matching up with your product...

    - If your product name is 2 or 3 words, it would be ideal for the domain to match it.

    - If your product name is not available to register as a domain, you'll want to check to see if that domain is currently in use. If someone is using that domain to sell a product in your niche, I would recommend coming up with a new product name to avoid conflicts.

    - If your product name is long, you'll need to come up with a shorter domain.

You may want to register a few domains to give yourself some options. (Multiple domains can be used for the same website. You can then split-test domain names on PPC, or use multiple domain names to avoid competing with your own affiliates on PPC)

Just don't register a bunch of domains you don't need.

    Hi Byron,

One thing you might try is research the keywords in your market to find what people search for frequently. I like to use the Google External Keyword tool for that - it's at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.

Then when you have a good selection of popular keywords, use the domain name suggestion tool at Domain Suggestions

They often come up with some that you might not think of.

    Hope that helps.

Only $250? I would have asked for much, much more! Whether you know it or not, that's a deal. Some of the webnames that I've wanted have been a minimum of $1500.

As to the original question, here's my million dollar suggestion. Find a keyword within your niche that is a high search volume and if there is no direct competition for the .com keyword then run with it.

For example, I was looking for another domain name for a quilting site, and I did some searching. I came across the keyword 'easy quilts' had pretty good search volume, and lots of competition...

        BUT!

There was no direct competition in the .com realm for the keyword. Ok, www.easyquilts.com is taken by a garbage site, so google doesn't rank it. BUT, www.easy-quilts.com was not registered. Not until now. I expect to be ranked for my keyword within the week.

        Make-a-sense?

        Frank

PS, nothing on the site yet, so it's NOT a blatant plug.

PSS, www.easy-quilts.com is for sale - only $1,000 for the domain name! (There's the blatant plug!)

          Thanks Frank.

Byron I'm very sorry that you feel that way. Obviously you do not value having just the right domain name as much as I do. However, just because we have differing opinions is no reason to get upset.

Actually I offered you a lower price than what I normally would for that domain because you are a warrior. I've been selling domain names for many years and I've never sold one for less than $200.

As with most things in life, everything is relative.

The reason I asked you to PM me is that I did not want to make public the low price I was willing to sell you that domain for.

Could you find a good name for your project for $10? Probably. But if you make a go of this business and it does well one day you will regret that you settled for just a good name because a great name will result in far more business down the road.

That's one of the reasons I started my Terrific Names membership site years ago.

I just started a WSO last night where I'm offering nearly 300 domain names for a one day sale before I submit them to the auction tomorrow, and the prices are a good bit lower than the reserve price for the auction.

Best of luck on finding your domain names. I'd be very interested to hear what you settle on.

          Warmest regards,

Get on the google keyword tool and research what keyword you'll be targeting. If you can get that keyword in your domain name you'll have an SEO advantage.

Go to domaintools.com and use their suggestion function.
It'll come up with huge lists of domains, as well as telling you whether or not they've been registered, and under what TLD. You can buy the domains directly through them, although it's probably cheaper if you go and do it through Moniker or some other registrar.

You're also going to want to get privacy protection on the domain so you don't get loaded down with spam from people scraping the Whois database, trying to sell you bs products.

There are pretty much no 4 digit domains left in non country coded TLDs.

First of all, try to keep your domain as short as possible. Although, you are able to book the name up to sixty three characters, however, it will be a difficult job for those visiting your website, remember the address of your site. A name up to seven characters is very much desirable.

Next, you will require selecting an appropriate extension for your website. There are numerous extensions available, some commonly used are as follows; .com, .biz, .org, etc. In order to select this extension, keep the nature of website in your mind. If you are running a website of any organization, opt for .org, if your website is for commercial purposes; go with .com similarly, selecting .biz for business purposes. While selecting the domain, try to avoid trademark names. There are many reasons for this suggestion; the most significant is that it does not seem fine. Similarly, another thing that should be kept in mind is that good domain names are snatched quickly. Therefore, if you have opted for any name, register it as soon as possible. Similarly, registering more than one name is also a good practice. For instance, if you have registered a domain ::: YOURNAME.COM :::, also try to register yourname.net: The Leading Your Name Site on the Net or yourname.biz.

I personally don't think that you have to get the best domain name out there. If you can get one with the niche keywords in it, that is enough. You also want to make sure that you register a .com name.

Your domain name should be no longer then 5 words.

Make that domain name easy for others to remember.
