NO way! My parents computer has that sh$tty fake virus scan thing on it at the moment. Dam thing pops up everytime you open the browser. Anyone know how to get rid of it?

Definitely not a real internet marketer, more like a huge internet scammer.

I would be embarrassed to use internet marketer with anything related to her.

Use Internet criminal when describing someone like that.

What honest internet marketers due is 100% legal, what she does is 100% illegal.

She should do jail time her and Bernie madoff would be good together.

I am sure most of use here have had the pleasure of her glorious popups, trying to sell us antivirus software, that you have a hard time getting rid off.

She made those sales based on a scaremongering lie that preyed on the ignorant. I think that if she had been forced to tell the truth from the beginning, she would likely be here somewhere whining about how affiliate marketing is dead or doesn't work.

King, this isn't even about pop-ups. They are annoying, but not illegal.

It was the deceptive phony infection warning used to scare people into buying that got her into trouble.

I read a news story (can't link, it's deep in the paid archives of the paper) where the reporter took a new, out of the box computer, had a certified shop strip it of everything but the bare necessities, and ran the phony virus check. Imagine her shock and surprise

when the scan found infections and recommended buying the software to rescue the computer.

As another poster said, sometimes karma is a beautiful thing...

The judgment has been assessed but not paid. From what I've read, $163 million is far in excess of any assets Kristy Ross and her co-conspirators are known to possess. Plus there are state charges against them as well as federal.

I believe the large amount serves two purposes: 1) it gets headlines and serves to deter potential wrongdoers, and 2) the feds can in the future seize any assets Ross et al are stupid enough to accumulate.

I'm not even sure how people fall for this. A virus asks you to pay to have it removed and you think "great idea!"??? Anyways, these viruses aren't all that difficult to remove. Most of them can be removed in safe mode with free automated programs like Malwarebytes. The rest can be removed in safe mode by tracking down the files that were created and deleting them. Usually you can check msconfig for new files added to startup to find the root of the virus. I'm not writing the whole thing up here, but basically run old timer's temp file cleaner in safe mode and then run malwarebytes to clean up the viruses. This will get rid of most viruses (If it doesn't work, the next steps are best left to a professional).

I have this happen to me, my kid downloaded one of those fake virus protection software. Very time I did a search a pop up would appear. paid $150 to geek squad to get it removed.

It is like the ad software that I see on allot of peoples' computers. It underlines text and an ad pops up every time the user hovers over the text.

I wish that add ons weren't allowed when downloading programs, etc. New users don''t know that they are giving the software permission to download by not unticking the box that tells them that they are installing it.

Technically the point could be argued IF this was Internet Marketing...

An offer went up albeit it in a coercive (and probably immoral way) and millions of people paid money. No, I did not personally get swindled but saw it dozens upon dozens of times.

Sounds like internet marketing to me although not in the common sense of the word

Agree. She is a criminal. Calling her an internet marketeer is as logical as calling Don Carleone a businessman.

As to viruses, the part about "questionable sites" used to be true, but not anymore. They can be picked up anywhere nowadays.

Eeeezactly! We've all seen this stuff. My day job is doing tech support and it's so frustrating to deal with customers who don't know beans about the Internet and are all worried and don't know how to get around it/get rid of it.

Then ISP's take the heat. Same goes for spam. Grrrr!

She is NOT an Internet marketer. She's a con artist, period.

I did some research. Apparently, she was just an employee of a company who did this and is one of several people who were indicted. She's disputing the judgement, basically saying "I just worked there. I didn't make the decisions."

Maybe so. But integrity is integrity, whether you're the employee or the boss.

These people should be the subject of a good old-fashioned lynching.

Sure it's tempting to do what that lady and her associates did. I'm not so sure if
it's a good idea to tempt fate like what happened to them, though.

While there are various reasons and ways to make money, history will maybe tell
you that providing (actual) value people are willing to pay for wins over time. Or,
something along those lines.

Let me think for a moment.... This is easy, no, I would not do it. Yes, I am honest here. Scam is not the type of business I can respect or want to imitate.
I have heard about some nice people from Nigeria who are practicing something very similar to that and I would not feel sorry if they loose all they money as well and spend some quality time in jail.

Absolutely no sympathy for this person, at all.
I have had this **** on my system more than once or twice over the years.
I'm lucky enough to know how to get rid of it permanently, but for all those poor folk who needlessly forked out money when there should have been no need to...THAT is why I am pleased that this has happened.

Do IM ethically and you can grow your business, have a happy customer base and establish authority within your chosen area.

Do it the way she did, and 9 times out of 10, Karma will hunt you down without mercy.

Good for her. scamming people for money over the internet is just wrong. If you want to make money online, teach something real, offer something that works, build tools that don't betray someone's trust.

I got nailed several times by something similar - there used to be one that would put up a dialog that looked like a Windows Antivirus warning, and if you clicked on it, you were either sent to a sales page, or you were hit with a ton of scumware

That crap caused me to loose several clients when I was doing freelance work - it hit me twice while I was working some tight deadlines - I didn't fall for it, but it still loaded scumware that I had to remove - couldn't even get online with all the popups and redirects. After all the dust settled, I had missed a couple deadlines and gotten lousy feedback on the site - really screwed me. Hit me a couple of times at my 9-5 job also

The courts are far too lenient - these jerks deserve jail time!

A stock broker who scams his clients of millions is still a stock broker.

But, she is a scummy Internet Marketer. She scammed a lot of people on a large scale and caught attention of the government. She deserves all the punishment she gets.

Let's be honest, among Internet Marketers there are a lot of scammers that tarnish our names. Just take a small example of those who steal our content and end up ranking better than we do. Most of us have been affected. These scams make money on our backs. And if their rankings beat yours they in effect steal our potential income. You cannot even fight them (well you could but it is very difficult).

Don't kid yourselves, she is/was an internet marketer and I wish all the other scammy Internet Marketers were caught too.

Just my two cents worth.

lol I wouldn't exactly call those marketing or promotions.

Imagine a popup message telling you there's an emergency one of your relatives is in critical condition and then taking you to a site where you have to pay 40 to 60 bucks to get more information.

That's not marketing at all that's a SCAM

Wow! That's a brilliant ideas of her to make people worried about the viruses and buy her antivirus. That's irritating to know that it's not real and wasted money to buy her antivirus. I didn't remember having one of those pop up on my PC, luckily she got caught otherwise i would be the next victim in the future.
