Conflicting advice about hosting server location &co.uk VS .com - Please help

Hey Guys

I've been hunting around the net for information about how much the country the website is hosted in effects your SEO for a particular country.

For example, if I bought a .co.uk domain to target uk customers, but it was hosted by hostgator in the US, how much does this effect the search results?

Also, which has more clout, the domain extention or the hosting location.

Many thanks
Phil

  • It Definitely affects your Local SEO Efforts phil. I personally have few websites that i had to host on a UK based server since the site is only meant for UK individuals. its only 1 month since i have moved on to a UK server but yes in my 4 years of SEO experience its always better to have a Server located in the same location as your Business.

  • Based on what I have seen over the last few years - it seems like UK hosting helps with local search. I seem to have more success with my .co.uk sites when they are on a UK server - it just feels like best practice as well.

When I want to target a global audience I always go with .com and US hosting.

  • Thanks very much guys, that makes sense.

  • Guys, just to clarify, it's only the hosting that effects the SEO, not where you register the domain name? In other words, if I registered the .co.uk domain through godday (US), it woudn't make any difference, because I will then host it with a UK hosting company.

    Cheers

    • The domain in which country it is registered in makes no difference at all.

  • It does make a difference, but not a huge difference. I provide hosting and domain packages for my clients (im a web designer) and some are from the UK and some are from the USA and I work alongside another hosting server so one is based in the UK (mine) and the other is based in the usa. So I set them up on different ones according to what country they are in.

    This is correct.

There's no factual information available about the extent. Only about the fact that it does, because that's all Google has ever stated and confirmed openly. So everything you can find on the question of "how much" is opinion only, I think.

My opinion is that the extent is going to be very variable, highly complicated, and dependent on multiple unknown factors.
