Stop With the Whining About Signatures Already!

I really don't understand the sudden backlash against signatures.

For some reason, I've been hammered by a small subset of members over my signature as have a few other members.

Newsflash! Signatures are allowed! If you don't like them, don't look at them!

There are many experienced folks on these boards that give out FREE information (and lots of it). In exchange, they (we) are permitted to display a signature.

Who cares what someone's motive is for posting? As long as the information provided is good (not just a single, "what he said" one-liner or some random common-sense info), what does it matter if the poster displays a signature or not? The information in the post is still good and still FREE.

This is a marketing forum. To be horrified by a signature seems ridiculous.

Nobody is MAKING you purchase a product or service from a signature. If someone's signature doesn't appeal to you, ignore it and move along.

I agree. Given that I run a web hosting company, I have paid for a signature, and provide what I feel to be excellent advice & help here as much as I can. Almost every thread that I've posted in, 90% of the time if it has anything to do with hosting, signatures get disabled.

Why? Please share what was said (I'm super curious by nature).

And where's your signature now? Add it, screw them man. As long as you're contributing to this forum in a positive way (which you are) you can add whatever the hell you want in that signature as long as it doesn't contain a photo of someone's mom or sister.

Hi Wolf, hope you're having a great day buddy.
I have recently been following a lot of your posts in the SEO sub forum as you're one of the few people in this space I have any time for (as well as the likes of Yukon and Paulgl).

I honestly think that the backlash against you in particular which i've witnessed countless times is due to the fact that you've been proven correct with the recent EMD Google update. You have been saying that day would come for a very long time and sure enough it happened. Thus, a load of really frustrated posters have been having a go at you due to jealousy, frustration and possibly anger!

Don't take it to heart Wolf, take it as a good sign that your business model is the right one and that authority sites (Amazon review sites in your case) are the way to go and always have been IMO. Take it all with a pinch of salt and realise that people posting just wished they had listened to you in the first place.

The only complaints against signatures I've seen are against people whose posts contribute nothing to the thread or who start pointless threads just to get their signature viewed (or increase their post count). Are people whining about signatures in general? If so, that's silly as almost all forums allow them.

I agree completely with your sentiment. Unfortunately, I've seen many other cases where sigs have been attacked simply because they are there.

So have I and that's just plain silly. Signaures are allowed as long as they follow the rules. Granted, there are some common sense unwritten rules that the mods enforce, but overall, if the sig follows the rules then people should let it be.

If you see a post that attacks someone in regards to their signature that's unfounded, simply use the report post icon (the red triangle underneath everyone's name) to notify the mods. If the mods think that's its out of line, then they'll take action.

While we do have moderators in this forum, we also have self-moderation and the report post icon is something we should all get into the habit of using (when appropriate of course).

100% agreed Rod, but in Wolf's specific case there's more to it then just people having a go at his sig. As I stated above the OP's been saying for ages in the SEO forum that people shouldn't bother with EMD's and loads of people were ignoring him or even bashing him about it.

Google came along and targeted these kind of sites that were trying to get an unfair SEO advantage whilst not providing good content for the end user. This has been asking for trouble for a long time and was well overdue IMO.

So in short a lot of the OP's frustrations are due to a lot of people venting their tempers' in Wolf's direction when he warned them about this in the first place. This is why i'm saying that he should try and take this recent situation with a pinch of salt as it will likely pass when things begin to settle down. I would also report the problem posts although if you've witnessed these posts like I have you'll realise it's been quite a widespread issue with a number of posters having a go!

I definitetly got that part. I just wanted to affirm that even in those situations, those kinds of flaming posts should be reported to the mods using the report post icon. It states right in the rules that members are expected to behave respectfully to one another (within reason of course) and that making false accusations is not allowed.

So wait... why did you take your sig down?

People are mad I get it, but why give them the control and take it down?
I mean was the harassment really that bad? It was an amazon link and I clicked on your sig probably 4-5 times. Actually liked your offer unlike 95% of offers I see on here.

I'd put that sig back up and tell people to kiss my ass (sounds rude but this is a marketing forum afterall).

This isn't the SEO sub forum Wolf, i'm with TPW, don't feel intimidated by these people, in fact since you didn't have your sig in this thread it actually drew more attention from me then it would have done by including it in the first place.

Tom, I give you credit for removing the sig in a thread you started about sigs. Even if you're doing nothing wrong (and you wouldn't have been if you'd left the sig showing here), it sets up the next guy who wants to see if he can push things a little further, etc., etc., ad infinitum ad ad nauseum...

I'll occasionally give someone grief over a sig, but it's usually because the combination of post/sig is plainly self-serving or more than a little ironic.

The last time I commented on a sig was in a thread on content locking. The OP asked for opinions on the practice and got a mix of reactions. Then came a poster whose two sentence endorsement of content locking as a strong, excellent tactic matched the link to his sales page offering - wait for it - content locking software.

If I see someone breaking the rules, I just report them. The habitual sig spammers who manage to stay just inside the rules, I've learned to ignore.

          Hi,

I could be wrong about this, but I think your signature will appear on all your posts once you reinstate it. I know some forums allow you to have different signatures. For example, you set your sig, make some posts, then change your sig. The posts with that first sig will keep it. Your next posts will contain whatever sig you change it to.

Here, I think they will all change.

So leaving it off would be pointless if this is the case. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Put your sig on and screw those idiots/losers who have made complaining their life.

This makes no sense. If you believe in something, you stand up for it and DO it. It takes away credibility if you feed into the attacks of others. Who cares what they think ! Don't go against the cause you are standing up for !! Which you are doing by not leaving your signature in this Thread.

Basically, you are lowering yourself down to their level !

Marketing discussion is where you join in threads of various different topics.

Marketing is targeting numerous threads on the same topic
of which one has a matching sig file.

just gonna add my 2 cents ... i happen to hate what i call sig posts, its the pointless one liners for promotion purposes.

I'll be honest, only made it through the first page of repsonses so im sure what i just said is reduntant

Wolfmii, if what your talking about is the sudden disdain for you sig link in the EMD thread, in my opinion it was in your first intial posts to the OP, you were coming across arrogant as hell with a sig link about overcoming the recent google EMD update or whatever it was .. you were tossing out one liners at first about how your crushing, killing, whatever

That being said, I did follow the thread as things went on and you explained so much better what you were trying to get across that i actually switched sides from stop spamming your damn link to guys shut up and read what he is saying

Anyhow, think your intentions were good just came off wrong at first

To me, thats the problem. The "difference" is a matter of location. The top of your post, or the bottom.

People are allowed to market with their sigs, but only allowed to discuss marketing in this forum. Seems like a huge conflict of interest.

While members are busy "discussing marketing" their sigs are screaming "click here". So to me, in every thread there is marketing being done... no matter how you look at it. If there is a sig, there is marketing.

Not saying there's anything wrong with it, but I have wondered if there's better ways.

I wouldn't take that heading too seriously. "Discussion forum" is an oxymoron, as a forum's purpose is discussion.

I believe the more appropriate descriptive term would've been "redundant."

            Redundant, yes...

And, while it may have been "arrogant", it was played against someone who is equally "arrogant".

I cant agree with you more.

I am sooo annoyed over people's rants about signatures. GET OVER it...

Likewise here -- I've been here seven years, have over 5k posts, and never gotten a single complaint about my sig. Not sure why the OP's experience is so radically different from yours and mine that he needed to start a thread about it? I haven't noticed any recent backlash about sigs, or any "whining" about them. Doesn't mean there isn't any, but I haven't seen it.

Not putting the OP into this category, but I DO see lots of sigs every day that break one or more rules, and/or people who post lots of junk one-line posts for sig exposure and/or to increase post count. Members understandably complain about those.

As they should. That said, I've seen cases (mostly recently) where people make snide remarks about the member's sig. Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive since I've been called out by a few members lately (overexposed maybe? :confused.

It's good to hear from some of the more seasoned members in this thread. I was beginning to think I had it all wrong.

I've recently had some nutter say I should have disabled my sig for my post where I disagreed with him, simply because the topic of discussion was relevant to my signature.

My post was utterly non-promotion in nature, of course, he just didn't like someone disagreeing with him and thus cynically believed if I disagreed with him it just meant I was trying to promote my sig. Silly and annoying point of view to have.

So yeah, I've seen bitter, jaded, arrogant, suspicious members here shout at others here for having the audacity to advertise in their signature links which is allowed by forum rules.

The OP was repeatedly accused of this for having a strong opinion in a recent thread, so I can see the point of this thread completely.

Chris, take your logic elsewhere. There are torches to light and pitchforks to set aflame .

I think Jason summed things up perfectly (in regards to sigs not really being a problem. No one complains about mine), and I'm in the same boat. You either like it or you don't. Nobody makes anybody else come to the forum and there is an option to turn signatures off so you don't have to see them. The whining isn't needed.

Signatures? REALLY? Is that what has taken all you folks away from makin money?

Now, let me say THIS before I say THAT...

DISCLAIMER: What I am gonna say ain't meant as no disrespect to anyone and I am only using IDs and NOT taking personal shots at any folks. Bubba Winkiedoodle, who is my legal counsel, has advise me that I cain't make any personal statements directed at nobody what thinks that somebody might be anybody what thinks someone somewhere might take offense to anybody who is somebody but not anybody!

Now, here is what I am thankin...

"Signatures" in the WF just ain't what keeps your boat afloat on the river of moolah so I just cain't take very seriously a thread what is discussin signatures with people named Fluffy The Wonder Cat, wolfmiii, theory expert, redshifted and luvhammers!!!

Now I am dadgum shore that each and ever one of you folks is a wonderful person what would be a pleasure to get to know but somethin about your IDs in this here forum lends itsself to not takin you seriously when you is discussin signatures!

Honestly, most signatures is like opinions... all folks got one and nobody gives a whit what it is!

You wanna know what makes a signature important? It is the folks behind the signature. If folks like you and respect you, they most likely will click through to see what you are up to. If you are just an ole windbag full of eight day old farty gas then ain't nobody wants to open it up!

BE somebody special so that folks WILL care about what you are sayin and then you can put just about anythin on your posts and people will be interested!

Now I have to be gettin back to my chaw and sippin on my siggie juice!

This is totally true! i just had some member bash me about my sig and that is says

"A new member joins every min"

    This is what he says..

"Sidenote: another thing that would make me look for another solution is when you read a line like "A new member joins every min" then being directed to a site listing all new members which have registered alot more than a minute apart - just saying - I shut the page down purely based on that alone."

Heres the funny part.. My site does get a new member per min on average this warrior member was just being a rude straight out . for no reason.. all i can think is " Warrior Haters" at this point..

Ok as there is only one side to the story then I'll give you mine if you want. I can't speak for others but I guess they had the same view as me and that's why they had a "whine", even though I wouldn't say what I said as you quoted above is whining or slamming you, but ok.

First though I'd like to ask you why do you think people critisized you and you're signature? Have you really thought about it? All I get from your thread is that you put yourself over as some kind of victim and cleverly put everybody else with a signature in your boat with you. Personally I think you're whining a bit but whatever.

The reason I think why people were whining was because it doesn't take a Joseph Robinson to work out what was going on.

If I had a penny for every time I've read on a thread in the last week, but last Saturday really, how you've been telling people for ages about emds blah blah blah or suchlike I'd have £12.69.

You may consider that as free and helpful info but it was in fact, now let's try to be honest here, just to expose your updated emd related signature to an audience that couldn't have been more targeted, plain and simple. Plain and simple aren't the audience by the way, that's just a saying. Anyway, nothing wrong with that maybe, but quite frankly I'm surprised that the amount of times your signature was appearing on Saturday it didn't trigger Googles spam algorithim on its own.

Of course people can have signatures or not and I'm really not bothered one way or the other. Really I'm not. But making out like you're oblivious as to why people were having a go is just plain silly for want of a better word. Maybe fluffythewondercat could enlighten me on that one?

People don't like spamming and that's how it appeared. Right or wrong, that's exactly how it appeared and to more than one person clearly.

The reason I didn't want to say all this is because it isn't productive as you obviously don't see what other people obviously saw. There's also people on here that only say things that they think others like to hear regardless of what's right or not because they are sheep and brown nose, but I don't.

So there you have it. I'm not lying, I'm not whinging, I'm not envious, I'm not really bothered. I'm telling you how I saw it and I may get trashed or whatever but I won't whine about it.

Ever heard the old truism, "There's no smoke without fire"?

The reason I didn't want to say all this is because it isn't productive as you obviously don't see what other people obviously saw. There's also people on here that only say things that they think others like to hear regardless of what's right or not because they are sheep and brown nose, but I don't.

So there you have it. I'm not lying, I'm not whinging, I'm not envious, I'm not really bothered. I'm telling you how I saw it and I may get trashed or whatever but I won't whine about it.

      LOL

You have said a lot here, and yet you have said nothing much at all.

So that I am not confused about things, let me ask specifically the point of your post...

You are saying that he posts too often, and thus, he is probably spamming his signature all over the forum?

Oh my goodness, Alistair. The truism I quoted was not directly pointed toward you as I had no clue who Wolf was referring to until later when you showed up in the thread. I meant you no disrespect.

Actually, I was directing my post to whiners in general as whiners are a pet peeve of mine.

I actually like to post this in response to whiners...

but went with the adage instead as it seemed to be a better fit in this particular situation.

So, from what I'm reading here, the part that bothers you about his signature is that it relates to the topic he posted about? By that argument, everyone here should get rid of their signatures. In a perfect world, the fact that he feels he is knowledgeable enough about the topic to include his related service in his signature would lead to more credibility, not less.

People come here who have many topics included in their signature. Doesn't mean their an expert. I'm not saying wolfmmiii isn't an expert and doesn't not know his stuff, in fact I didn't say much really until people pushed it, but I lay my own bed.

To address your side though: you have a point as well. I've been looking back through wolf's post history to find the thread where this went down, and I think that you didn't need to handle it the way that you did. Either report the individual posts that look spammy, or give them a profile infraction that warns them against the behavior you are seeing. Mods see those too (at least the red cards I believe), and you can directly alert/confront the offendor in a place other than a public thread.

I can see where you are seeing wolf as repetitive, and if the sig is a new one that is meant to pimp what he is saying in posts I understand your anger. I can't directly back you though, because I myself have given writing/article syndication advice in a ton of threads while displaying a signature advertising syndicated writing services. Don't want to be a hypocrite .

I have to agree. I've only just joined the Warriors Forum after hearing much praise (despite knowing of it's existence for quite some time), and I'm shocked at the behavior expressed by some on this thread.

These kinds of threads are an aberration, although they do occur far too frequently.

Where egos meet, there will occasionally be ego clashes.

People here in the forum are generally for more tolerant than what you have seen in this thread... But occasionally, people will take a stand against ignorance or stupidity, and there is nothing wrong in doing so...

Don't let it scare you away from the bigger conversation about making money.

          Hi Bill,

Yes you are right. This is human nature, for those that are driven by an unruly ego.
Whilst a thread like this isn't likely to instil discipline in those that lack self control, it will at least bring to light their ignorance and/or stupidity, as you quite rightly pointed out.

It was just a shock for me as it was the first thread I visited.

I've never met a guy with no eyes or ears before.

Mind you, I did know of a man with no arms or legs. He went to a brothel, and the madam answered the door. "What do you want?" she said.

        "Sex", he replied.

I can't say that ALL of my replies have been contributive in a meaningful way....I mean, sometimes it's just telling someone "thanks for the info!" if the share was good.

But out of the almost 200 posts in only a month I've made, I think the majority of them have been a decent contribution, even if several were merely comical.

Sigs are an incentive to post as others have pointed out already, and I think most of us feel we have something decent to offer via our sigs, so I really don't care who complains about it, the exception being the admins of course.

Feel sorry for them in some ways.
