I was surprised to discover from a pretty advanced fellow today that he did not know that one could accept checks by fax from a client, and then cash the faxed copy.

it's 100% Legal, and people have been acceoting checks by fax, phone, and email, for years....

if anyone wants me to elaborate, just ask .

  • I have never heard of this before. Is the fax/email being printed out on check paper or you just take the copy of the check and cash it?
  • good question...

    100% plain printer paper!

here is a link to an article on the subject: (i gave it a quick skim, seems OK)

What is a Check Draft, What is a Bank Draft, What is Check Drafting?

  • Please explain. I hate to wait 2-3 Days for my Check to arrive from US.
  • It is not necessary to use a cheque at all.

You can write an instruction to your bank to pay the amount, to the person named, on any plain piece of paper.

Cheque books simply make the task easier.

As a matter of interest, the delays in clearing cheques are due to the banks insisting that cheques must be presented to the issuing branch for final clearance - and they usually go by snail mail.

  • I have heard the same thing about using any paper to make a "check".

The tricky part is getting a bank to take it. Even if they know they can, they are likely to do their best to convince you otherwise.

    • Strictly speaking, even "paper" is optional.

One place odd checks used to surface was in payment of taxes. Before the rules got very explicit, some of the odd "checks" the tax agencies reported were...

      > A check carved into a large, ripe watermelon
      > A check scribbled on a pair of dirty undershorts
      > A check engraved into a 500 lb. slab of granite.

After that, I think a plain-paper fax is pretty tame.
