I have 5534 comments on my blog.. Why?

(This is the second time I had to write this post. Accidentally closed it, d'oh).

So a little background. I started this blog in Oct. 2011 and I ran it until Nov. 2011. Then I moved to an area that had zero internet (middle of the mountains) for some time. Updated the blog again in July 2012 and forgot about it. Updated the blog a couple of days ago. I haven't done a lot of work towards getting traffic and I'm pretty sure that I just got it indexed to Google a few days ago? Anyways, I've made $23 bucks on it, which I'm pretty sure is enough for the domain and most of the host.

Anyways, I haven't put a ton of effort into it but I have:

5534 comments, 5326 approved, 113 pending and 95 spam.

I'm pretty sure a lot of it is spam - ie. names with ridiculous website links to ridiculously unrelated shit. A lot of it is weird praising of my writing - usually with links and other crap. It's very strange haha.

I could provide examples of exact comments and specifics and stuff but if anybody could at least help me make sense of it? haha I don't suppose having links from other people directing all ways from my site isn't terribly bad? However, even though my blog isn't necessarily very 'professional' (yet) these comments kind of clutter my posts and are not useful towards my actual articles and affiliate products.

Any suggestions are helpful! Thanks!

    I am sure these are all spam comment. But I am not sure how 5326 comments got approved. I think you are using some kind of auto approve blog engine.

    these comments come from autoblogcommentprograms like scrapebox and are there for backlinks plus some traffic from these blogs.
    just deactivate the autoapproving of comments and you should be fine!

    Very simple to delete all approved ones in a couple of seconds.

    Go to phpMyadmin and to the database, run this query

    SQL Command to Delete all Pending Comments In Wordpress:
    Code:

    delete from wp_comments WHERE comment_approved ="0";

    SQL Command to Delete all Approved Comments in Wordpress:
    Code:

    delete from wp_comments WHERE comment_approved ="1";

    SQL Command to Delete ALL Comments In Wordpress:
    Code:

    delete from wp_comments;

    Poof ...gone.

          What is Scapebox? Is there a way to get off of it? I do believe I have a captcha set up already, I still seem to be getting a ton of spam comments though. I also have them off of 'auto-approve' so they don't actually appear, but I have to constantly remove them.

          They are no long auto-approved, so they don't actually appear on the blog. Like I said - I have been using a captcha, so it does stop them from actually showing up. But I still get like 300-400 new spam comments to delete every morning.

          I'm just trying to figure out a better way of dealing with these ridiculous comments? I'd like to think that I can attract positive and real users to post comments in the future but I have no way of finding/approving them through the mess of spam I get.

          I use it about once a week. It's definitely copy and pasted and saved on my desktop haha - Such a genius way / easy way to get rid of the comments but very frustrating to have to go through this process. Hoping I can find a better way to manage the comments / track backs, etc.

    Make sure to then turn auto approve off!

    Would it be worth it to go through any of these comments and keep any of them on the site? Or just delete them all, apply a better spam filter and hope that I start getting related comments to my products/ posts?

      I seriously doubt that there is one single comment worth keeping. I'd delete everyone of them and then use an anti-spam plugin

    Hi guys,

    Don't mean to bring this back up but I'm still having trouble with the 'comments' issue.

    I have added a 'captcha' anti-spam plugin but it does not seem to be helping, or I must not have it set up properly. Would anybody be willing to take a look at some of the settings I have (I can PM them or email or whatever) and help me figure out a good way to keep spam off my site and how to differentiate legitimate comments, etc.?

    Thank you in advance.

    Most of them will be spam comments built with Scrapebox or similar tools

    It's kind of obvious that most of those comments are just spam. I get those a lot on our company blog and I have to make sure that none of them ever see the light of day!

    I've used the plugin, WP Spam Free plugin and it filters out most spam comments before they get posted.
