Coming up with eBook titles?

Sometimes I feel like the title of the eBook is what turns the writer into a wealthy person. That being said, what are some ways to come up with great eBook titles?

I think you are half right about your assumption. The title of your ebook will help draw your customer in, but the content of your ebook is what will keep your customer from asking for a refund.

That being said, when I choose titles for my books, I do so using either of the 2 methods below:
    • I either focus more primarily on using keywords (SEO) that people are searching for (since I sell all my books online)
    or
    • I focus on choosing an attention grabbing title...something maybe a bit shocking that will draw the person in

For example, say I wrote an ebook on dog training. If I were using the keyword "dog training", and I was focusing on SEO'ing my title, I could name my ebook "Dog Training For Smart People"......which uses the primary keyword and is still a tad catchy.

If I was focusing more on an attention grabbing title, I could name my ebook "Fido! Stop Peeing On That Rug!" ...... or something catchy like that.

You could also incorporate both methods and have a title like "Fido! Stop Peeing On That Rug! - Dog Training For Your Dear Pooch."

    You get the picture.

Here's a little secret that I use when focusing primarily on attention grabbing titles....I go to the store and spend some time browsing the magazine racks looking at headlines in or close to my ebook's niche.

Magazine headlines are super catchy. There's a reason they are always placed so strategically at the check out counters where you have to wait in line. They know you will be drawn in by those killer headlines and just have to buy one, or two, or three...

Take notes on how magazine headlines are worded and how they personally affect YOU when reading them. Which ones make you want to read the articles inside? Emulate those.

Here is a section of my training that deals specifically with coming up with book titles... How To Come Up With Killer Titles That Bring In The Moolah

    Hope that helps!

The title definitely needs to be catchy to get hungry buyers. Expert copywriters will tell you the headline makes or breaks the rest of the copy and they are right.

Be careful not to make the title misleading in any way. This may be ok to do with blog headlines and such but not for an ebook that they must purchase to read. You will get a lot of upset customers and refunds that way.

I do quite a bit of writing myself since I'm bootstrapping. While writing the body is boring and tedious to me, I truly enjoy writing catchy headlines. That being said, with practice, you will learn to enjoy it too I'm sure.

If you are going to sell in the IM/MMO markets, particularly in the WSO section, you need one or more of the following in your title:

      > Reference to a natural disaster (tornado, avalanche, hurricane, etc.)

      > Martial arts reference (ninja, kung fu, etc.)

      > Reference to a performance enhancing drug (steroids seems to be most popular)

      > Reference to an illegal amphetamine (crack seems to be the reference du jour)

      > Income levels normally reserved for oil sheikhs and teen pop stars.

If you can work in all five, you can buy a big mansion on the beach and a little red sports car, working 3-5 minutes per month, and do it by next week (if you're slow)...

      :p
