Open Office or Microsoft Office

Hello All

I just got a new computer and am debating Open office or paying for Microsoft office. I did a search here and the last comparison was in 2009 and we all know how quickly things change in the technology world.

Just looking for opinions from people who have used both.

One of the main uses I will have is to make power point presentations for review videos. But, I will also want to create some ebooks.

Thank You

Al

Try open office - they have power point like app as well.

Once you try, if you don't like it, you have the option of buying MS office.

My new computer came with Home/Student Version of MS office.
And I installed OpenOffice as well.
Computer is mainly for kids so, I am not sure which one they like as they go.

I personally use Open Office but in my opinion they are both great for writing and making presentations.

Go for open office, it's completely free as an open source program. Basically a twin to microsoft.

I'd go with OO because it's free. You can always buy MS Office if you decide you dont like OO.

If i was in your position then i would go for Microsoft office. There are two reasons behind my decision. First of all i know that open office is really good. But you need to consider from others prospective as well. The features you would enjoy in Microsoft office you would not enjoy those features in open office. And second thing is that maximum people are fan of Microsoft office instead of open office. So take decision wisely.

OO is great for what you want. I use both and I really don't have a preference. You just have to remember that most docs you receive from others will be MS office. If you don't have MS Office you have to "open with" OO. You can't just click open, unless there's a way to set OO as your default way to open MS. Now I'm curious. Off to my pc to figure that out.

I work in IT, use both often-there is really not that much difference and open office is fully compatible with all Microsoft apps. so save yourself 700 bucks and try open Office, you can always move on to MS if you like.

    Hi

If you have the cash to get MS Office, you could use both.

MS Office is better at some things than Open Office. I have both and usually use Open Office, but every once in a while I run into something that MS Office does better than OO.

Incidentally, Libre Office has replaced OO as the open source MS Office substitute. Development on OO has stopped, but LO has picked up where OO left off. There were originally the same but LO continues to be supported and have features developed.

Once you get use to Open Office, you will find that it is a very good software and it is completely free!!! I would suggest you try out Open Office first and if you do not like it then you still have the option of trying out Microsoft Office.

    Good Day

    Both are good office programs.

MicroSoft has a 30 day FREE trail for anyone to try out. The office and home version ($350.00) will give you everything you need to test it out. Support is there to help you if needed.

Open Office has all you will need also.

OpenOffice does everything Microsoft Office does, and it is free. OpenOffice documents can be opened by others who are using Microsoft Office.

Open Office. I am a big fan of open source and I find it's just as good or even better than MS. I would leave Windows completely but some software only runs on that platform. Try Open Office for free and you can always switch to MS later, if desired.
