I've got a site that sells outdoor products. It has several categories ranging from camping to pets. Because I am on a very limited budget due to being out of work, I can't afford to advertise with google adwords or any other types of paid classifieds. I have the site name in all my sig lines. I'm new to forums and blogging. Does anyone have any low cost or free advertising ideas I can try to promote my site.

If you happen to look over my site please give me feedback on what I can do make it better. My site name is Outdoor Activity Store dot com and can be viewed in my sig line.

Thanks!

You need to have a major re-think about your site architecture if you want to be successful in the organic search engine listings! The site itself looks great, and it's good that you've broken it down into categories. However, since all of the sub-pages are accessed through default.asp, you're getting no benefit in SEO terms.

I would strongly recommend that you download and study Dan Thies' excellent free SEO guide from SEO Fast Start: Free SEO Book & Help from Dan Thies and look at your site again with a renewed perspective.

    Hope this helps!

To start I would take one product type from your store. Let's say portable GPS devices. Gather information about each of them and then start building review and information sites that are keyword phrase specific.

Review or discuss each product and then give them a link to your store to make a purchase.

    Rinse and repeat.

Thanks for all the advice. Except for lacraiger's spamming advice. I hope he joking and really doesn't do that with his business.

I will definitely work on this except for the spamming tips craigerla gave.

      I will

Pick one of your products and start writing articles and press releases about that particular product. Using relevant keywords, bookmark them and you will get quality results back.

Then move onto to the next product and repeat the same step as articles are the free to do and once you have done a few it was become second nature to you and creates great backlinks back to your product.

I'm at a loss to see why anyone would choose your online store rather than Sport Chalet, REI, Petco or any of the other well established sporting goods and pet stores.

Are you familiar with the idea of Positioning, or a Unique Selling Proposition? There are marketing books about both of these topics - books you can find at Amazon for a low price, or free at the library.

If there was something unique, valuable and special about your site, it would be much easier to promote it.

Sorry to be harsh, but it really does look very generic from here.

Allen is totally right. This is a loser without advertising. The site is weak
anyway. Looks very inferior (low buyer confidence) compared with, say,
      Cabela's.

Sites like this can work if you are selling artwork or handmade goods.
With mass-produced commoditities you'll lose with this revenue model.
