How Can I Gain Focus?

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm very frustrated with myself right now. I'm frustrated because I've dabbled in internet marketing for the last decade, and I've never actually accomplished anything meaningful. Why? Quite simply, I always abandoned my little projects here or there when the going got tough in school.

Now, at the end of this week, my hideously long quest in pursuit of an MD will be fulfilled, and I'll have until July with nothing to do except attend interviews. Obviously, it is high time for me actually sit down and focus on a project and see it through to completion.

My goal is to build something that I can hand off to a family member when I start residency and get a little residual income from. I have several ideas, if you like I can describe them in detail in a later post, but I really need to figure out how to focus on one idea.

I think this means drilling down into the market and finding out just what my real prospects for success with a given business model will be. I'll have a decent chunk of cash from graduation gifts, and the time to set aside, and I really want to learn the ins and outs of making a website convert and SELL a product or a service. This will serve me well once I start doing hair transplants and liposuction

If any of you wonderful people could give me some pointers about getting myself focused, gathering the data I need to be confident in the niche I'm going to so I don't change my mind at the last minute and end up chasing my tail like a foolish dog, and all that other stuff to someone who has dabbled for a decade and never really done anything, I'd very much appreciate the good advice.

Memorize the below quote and say it to yourself several times daily.

"Take up one idea. Make that idea your life.
Think of it... Dream of it... Live on that idea.
Let the brain, muscle, nerves, every part of
your body, be full of that idea, and just leave
every other idea alone. This is the way to
    success."

very well said warriorokay, this strategy becomes 10 times more powerful when combined with breathing exercises. Ultimately breath is life, once breath is disconnected from your body you are dead. Learn to channel your breath through your body and mind and imagine that every day success is getting that closer and your dream is getting fulfilled. The very thought of this positivity helps to channel your mind in right direction and achieve success when time is right.

Listen to Warriorkay, he's on the RIGHT track.

Don't lose hope man. I use to be that way ALL the time. I finally got sick and tired of always being broke and giving up on projects, so I found ONE really good affiliate product and niche I loved and just kept plugging away.

This is the way I figure it...

Make it BIG in the niche you love or with a high-profit product that you can sell reasonably well...

Then outsource all the other projects and ideas you have. That's what I'm going to do as I get bigger and bigger.

Once you make your first few $500 days, you won't mind sticking your guns to a single place for a while :-)

Also another piece of advice from a man who knows from lots of experience...

Keep it simple. I mean dead simple. 3 step simple if you can.

Most of us get overwhelmed not from the difficulty of internet marketing but from the vast opportunity that is inherently installed in the business model.

Just get your wheels turning and GO GO GO!

      To the top,

For focus, motivation and results you should get a coach.

There are many coaches out there so choose very carefully, do plenty of research.

I think maybe you need to give yourself a bit of a break. Finishing med school takes FOCUS and you are definitely right about needing to focus during your residency - so you have the ability and discipline. It wasn't hiding anywhere - you were using your resources somewhere else.

Remind yourself that you do have discipline and focus and remember that you faced some real challenges through med school. While those challenges were more structured than IM - you do have the ability. Maybe you need to make your plan and have someone in your family to keep you structured - like an accountability partner?

Wow, thanks for all the thoughtful replies! They are all very helpful. I will definitely look into getting a coach, though I did once before and I determined that I just didn't have the money for it.

@Gail I think you are right, I was focusing on school instead of IM, which is definitely a good thing, and now that its over I may find it much easier to focus. I just have to pick a project! :-D

I was just thinking wow this is someone that just got through med school. That must have been very hard and stressful for you. No wonder you couldn't do IM. Your residency is going to be just as stressful, right? Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Sounds like you are going to be very busy though.

    1) do one thing.

    2) did you do it yet?

    3) return to step 1

keep repeating steps 1 thru 3 until task has been accomplished.

Move on to next task. (go to step 1 again)

Draw a vertical line on a piece of paper. One one side list what you want, and on the other, for every want, list what you don't want. For example, a want could be "to be successful with adwords" and a "don't want" could be "to not get the G slap".

List all your wants and don't wants. Next up, focus on a few core wants and attempt to master them, obsess with them.

Yes it seems simple, but just doing this simple exercise will give you far more clarity than not doing it.

The best way you can do is write the plan down on paper, what is the objective of the site, and your goals for your site, then follow it and stick to your plan until you reach your goals, when you have something on writing, you'll tend to take it more seriously and more focus to it, hope that helps.

I think a few others have already pointed out some great stuff, Gail and WineBuddy.

One thing that helps me personally is to listen to my MP3 everyday for 15 minutes or more depending on what I am doing. I grab audio books like The Slight Edge - Jeff Olsen or 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

A little each day seems to help me "remember" to focus and stick to one thing.

I AGREE with this statement and want to say that without a definite purpose you will be like a chicken with its head cut off running around aimlessly with no cause. You need a definite purpose paired with massive action to achieve it. The 6 steps inside of Think and Grow Rich will help you form your purpose.

Well, you need to do something that holds your interest and that you can be passionate about. It's hard for anyone to stay focused when they're not really into what they are doing. Maybe you should look into performing some kind of service that suits your skills and interests instead of just dabbling in things that you become bored with.

I think having to focus on a thing is duly related to your state of mind. Our state of mind hovers around the senses, becauses our senses are sending the impulses to the brain to like or dislike things, to be happy or to be sad, to be lazy or to be productive. You need to tame your senses to do certain things and it can come through discipline/habit. We all know meditation can be a great tool to control our frontal areas of the brain that are critical to making decisions. Personally i've found myself making irrational and bad decisions when i've not done breathing or meditational exercises; i'm more happy and relaxed when i've done breathing exercises. Half an hour to one hour of everyday breathing exercises makes my day totally different. I usually do breathing exercises when my stomach is totally empty as this is when the breath circulates around the body and mind with free flow. After doing an hour long exercise i become more focused and productive. If you want to learn more about the kinds of breathing exercises that i do feel free to pm me and i'd be willing to share with you.

    Hi there,

I think to stay focus, you can build daily basis to do list.
I usually prepare the to do list for the next day, and do as I wrote the previous day.
Then I do it regularly.. it keeps me to focus in something..

Just find real concept/ method/ strategy of online business,

    Hi Fransisco,

Yeah you can have all the advice, knowledge etc at your disposal.

But until you have clear goals and a plan to set your sails in life, you will more than likely quit at the first stumbling block you face.

Visualise your dreams, goals and desires every day!

Close your eyes and see yourself in that dream life you desire again and again until it becomes your main focus in life.

Find a mentor to help you to create that vital initial momentum.

All you have to do is decide on the life you want and then visualise it until it becomes a reality.

Hope this helps and all the best my friend!!!

The reality is that you gain focus by removing distractions and obstacles.
You must determine the "Why Factor" behind the "What" you're doing.

Did you have a defined and written end goal?
What steps are taking each day to reach your goals?
    What does success look like?
How are you measuring your success?
Who do you bounce ideas on Internet Marketing each and everyday?

The keys to your success lie within answering the 5 questions that I've listed.
I wish you the best of luck.

I think you must first know what are your topmost priorities and goals, & answer the question why you want to engage in Internet Marketing in the first place? Next, you must create a to-do list of what you like to accomplish say in a day, week, or month to stay focused and keep track of your goals and outcomes. Downloading free mind-mapping tools can help you achieve this.

For motivation, just take a breather from all IM-related stuff, watch the sunset, read a good book, feel the breeze, and be thankful/grateful for all the wonderful things in your life. Ditch the negative thoughts, and you'll surely be fine.
