How do you present yourself online?

I would be grateful for an honest advice from those who have experience in building niche sites and list building.

Most IMs talk about entering a niche, building a list and then serve their customers with relevant and valuable content is the way to go. I agree. Let's say you start a site in a niche where long-term relationship and list-building makes sense. You do your homework, research the products and genuinely want to bring the best offers to your customers.

Let's say you enter a weight loss or any other health related niche. How do you present yourself?

If you build niche sites in profitable markets like software, weight loss, fitness etc. You can't stand behind all these businesses with your real name and pretend being a "specialist"... or do you?

The term specialist is pretty ambiguous these days. =)

95% of IM'ers have great relationships with clients who also advertise offline and with other people. Stop missing out on that cash and leverage into it. PM me if you are an established marketer and want to find out how.

You can easily get a face/name (other than yours to put on it).

Interview an expert and put his face/name on the sales page.

If you're selling a weight loss product get someone who was super fat and who's now ripped on it.

Software? who cares who's name/face you use. Set up a 2 minute demo and that's all you need (with some short wicked copy).

Really depends on what niche you decide, have you zeroed in on one specifically?

Travis Sago and Eben P both in the relationship niche - they use their real names in IM and another in the relationship niche - but their own faces in both. I think the answer lies in what you do, where your comfort level lies and where you see the future in these niches are going.

I think many people choose to use their own name/face on their sites. I also follow Travis Siago and I know for a fact that he does. I guess if you are proud of what you are promoting you won't mind putting your real name and face on your site.

I do understand, though, that for some it's better to use a pen name/pseudonym. There are jobs that you would want to keep separate.

For example, if you were a doctor or lawyer, when a potential patient/client Google'd you, would you want your internet marketing businesses to show up too? No, you'd want that separate.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm I was trying to say, Nate! Good point. I am entering a niche I know a lot about which is fitness and nutrition. I have a masters in Biochemistry and have been doing sports on recreational basis all my life. The thing is that while I am very comfortable about corresponding with people and writing the articles I do not see myself serving as a "picture" role model to the cause.

So, do you consider writing under a pen name and as such corresponding to the customers a viable option?

Yup. If your circumstances and/or niche requires it, go with a pen name. Absolutely.

Why do you need to be a "specialist"?

If you are, great. If you're not, just tell the truth.

Tell them that you had issues/have an interest in the same area or that you did your research and found some great products that they could benefit from purchasing.

    JUST TELL THE TRUTH!

a specialist is great if there is some credentials behind it, but in online and seo it is pretty hard to really know these days as lots of people try

      Exactly!

      Always think about your customer.

How would you feel, as a customer, if you had an ongoing relationship with someone and then found out they were not even real?

You can find a more indepth answer to your question by reverse engineering the successful marketers in whatever niche you enter. If its dating or health and fitness there are always tons of successful examples you can use for careful analysis.

    Hi Photorion!

It's all about credibility and a good appearance of you site. In terms of credibility, you have to produce great content which is unique compared to others. Just think of something different that will set you apart from your competitors. Remember that your main goal is to become the authority.

When it comes to appearance, you have to have a nice webpage design. More importantly, your site must be user friendly to the point that searchers can easily find what they want in your site.

Great question man. I operate mainly in the network marketing niche, which is really all about relationships.

I am honestly just myself. A somewhat nerdy, analytical guy, who loves both personal development and Dungeons & Dragons.

I talk about playing Warhammer and SEO in tandem.

Ultimately, I just try to be totally genuine. In terms of the whole "specialist" bullshit, they're a dime a dozen. I see SO MANY people who've never made a DIME in mlm or even internet marketing claiming to be a "coach" or an "expert".

I've made thousands of dollars online and have never once called myself an expert.

I can't even really think off the top of my head anyone in the network marketing niche online who markets themselves as an expert, usually they just have their results speak for themselves.

Some people will like you for being genuine, some people will hate you. If you try to make everyone like you though, you'll get nowhere quick.

Many IMers have different pen names for the niches they go into. You won't seem very credible if people look you up and you're allegedly an expert in 10 different niches.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7140606].message }}
    • You can definitely use a "pen name"...and a made up Avatar. As long as the product and/or services are good and not scammy or spammy, people are cool with that...I'd say.

You present yourself as an authority, and that means knowing your stuff. If you can't then your fooling yourself and your customers, so don't bother.

Whether you use your real name or a nom de plume is completely irrelevant. What matters is that you truly know what you're talking about. Otherwise you're a fake, and I've yet to be introduced to a counterfeiter that hasn't been rumbled at some time.

It's tough when you are in a lot of niches, especially niches you are not good at. For example, I own a couple of cooking websites - I can't even get my cat to eat the stuff I make most nights, let alone my family, lol. So on those sites, I don't use my name at all and I don't try to be an authority either.

On sites I care about, like my ecommerce site I do use my full name and picture. I want my customers to know there is a real person who stands behind the product and will answer any of their questions or give them help if they need it.

If an individual came to know about all the interior techniques, then only he will be called as "specialist". Before that we cant use this quote before the name.
