How Did You Earn Your First Affiliate Sale?

What's up Warriors? It's Dan here and I wanted to start this thread for a couple reasons.

Firstly, I think that most of the people viewing this thread will know how lucrative affiliate marketing is, but may not have made their first couple sales yet...

After reading this thread they should have a better idea of the most popular ways that they can sell affiliate products, and hopefully take action and make it happen for themselves.

The thing is, most marketers who are just starting probably think you need a big list or a website to make money with affiliate marketing, and that's not 100% true. Don't get me wrong, having a list and an authority website WILL help you make a lot more money and shoot you up to the next tax bracket, but it is not necessary to make your first sales.

Secondly, all the marketers out there who are already making good money with affiliate marketing please come forward and let everyone know how you got your start. Was it Youtube, Scribd, Craigslist, Ezine Articles?

I'm not asking you to reveal all your secrets but just a nice description of how you made your first sale...

I think everyone could benefit from this information because whether you are already selling affiliate products or not you might get some great ideas from here.

Who wants to start it off?

PS- My first affiliate sales were made by doing video reviews of Clickbank products on Youtube. I had NO website and NO list, just a 4 minute Youtube Video and an affiliate link

I made my first affiliate sale through oldschool MSN. Looking for contacts in online chat rooms asking them if they might be interested. We talked over the MSN client and I gave him only information he wanted to know. That's how I sold my first affiliate product via Clickbank.

It was so different when I made my first sales. It was for a natural alternative to Viagra and a dating site, that is still around, called Friendfinder. Back then all you had to do was build a site spam the hell out of it with keywords. The way we did that was to leave a large amount of white space after the content and then type your keywords about 100 times, we could even make the text the same color as the backround.

I made my sites for the fun of it and never thought anything of it. Then, about 6 months later I got a check from Friendfinder for $110.00 and another from the alternativeviagra company for around $50.00, and I got Friendfinder checks for a couple of months and the viagra checks for 3 or 4 months.

I was busy with life so I never did anythong more until a few years ago when I opened my eccomerce site.

Good stuff so far, especially the one about the old school MSN chatrooms method. I used to use MSN to chat with my high-school friends

It pops up pretty much as soon as I get on the page. I am not able to read the post at all because you leave no way to remove your "exit pop" and even when I do enter my email to try and see the post you send me to a clickbank product. So to me this is a very sneeky way to stuff affiliate links into this forum. To top it all off I never get to read this post and everytime I go back through your link I get the same "exit pop" as soon as I try and scroll down.

Oh sorry about that, on my screen I can see the exit button clearly. I've made it smaller to accomodate everyone. Thanks for the heads up!

By the way, just to be clear it's set to exit pop so it will only come up when you move the cursor up toward the exit button. Not trying to spam anyone on here. Nobody forced you to click the link. Sorry if I've offended you though.

It was a long time ago, but I remember writing an article for a product on ClickBank. I uploaded a YouTube video and redirected the link in the description to my article on ArticleBase.

2 months later, I look into my ClickBank account and voila, my first ClickBank sale.

By then I was already working on Amazon and earning commissions from left right and center. Now I make money from both and it's all completely on auto-pilot.

My first money was from selling a few clickbank ebooks on some blogger landing pages, and I got traffic from ezinearticles. After that I started making my own niche sites and monetized with adsense and CPA. As we all know, niche sites aren't doing as well as they used to, so I'm looking into some new business models that don't rely on google so much, I'm a little peeved with the big G right now!

Most SEO's are pretty rattled about all the Google updates, especially the exact-match domain update that just recently hit.

Personally, that de-indexed 4 of my clickbank sites that I had launched BEFORE the product did and I lost tons of passive commissions.

Moving forward I have decided not to rely on Google (except for video SEO) and have started driving paid traffic to my affiliate offers. It's important to find a sustainable business model before you do any amount of work...

I know that it seems a lot of these tactics are outdated but the truth is that using sites like Squidoo or EzineArticles still works, it's called the BUM Method of Marketing...

Invest nothing except for a little time and reap the benefits, that's the beauty of Article Marketing through high-authority sites.

Yeah I first got into IM a few years back after reading about bum marketing, as you might be able to tell by my ID here. I'm not so new anymore, but I'm sure many would still consider me a bum! Squidoo does indeed still work, I recently put up a handful of lenses within the past month and I'm getting daily search engine traffic and made some amazon sales already. To make any serious money with squidoo and amazon though you've got to be committed and pump out a ton of lenses.

My first foray into affiliate marketing was very lucrative. I entered into the celebrity sex scandal arena. I made a boat load of money when Paris Hilton did her thing, etc. Back then Google was a very different animal and I COULD NOT believe how easy it was to make money.

I stuck with the celebrities for awhile, until the legal threats really mounted.

Perez Hilton sold his blog in 2010. So any changes in style were due to that. Considering he was working like 12 hours a day on the site, I can't imagine they kept him on board. He probably hasn't written a new post there since it was sold.

I didn't know he sold it, but the change in style was real obvious. I guess he "Tweets" now for his bucks

    Hello,

totally new to this forum and to internet marketing. I have zero cash to invest, but I have some time and I am willing to work for it...

I watched a video by John Penberthy, where he talks about youtube optimisation and doing vids for clickbank products. I get how it all works.. My problem is knowing what niche and what products to go for right now. Things seem to change daily.

I get daily product alerts from clickbank... It is all so confusing. Not really sure where to start! Any advice would be much appreciated! I am interested in health, fitness and weight loss- because I have a science and health background... However, I am acutely aware that the area is overloaded with products and overloaded with affiliates! Is it saturated or is that just me? Help please!!

Dan, how did you focus your efforts when you first started?
    • Did you do lots of vids for one product?
    • Did you create lots of vids for multiple products?
    • Did you do it all from one channel?
    • Did you keep creating new channels for each product/vid?

John Penberthy is at the top of google for a lot of his review vids- but seems to not stick with one youtube channel. He appears to have a different channel for each product- which seems a bit odd to me.. Apart from the fact that he could monetise youtube as well by building an audience on youtube...

Anyway... Enough waffle from this newbie! Any advice on any of the above queries would be very much appreciated!

    Best wishes

      Hey Bensgirl,

Doing video reviews on Youtube can be done in a bunch of different ways. You can create different channels for different products if you are trying to optimize your channel name itself for a keyword.

For you, I would recommend just to create a different channel name only for different niches. I use a general channel name for the bulk of my reviews which are all in one niche.

As for creating videos you should focus on doing multiple videos for each product. Do some keyword research and find some low competition search terms and do what you been taught to rank for them as best as possible. If you're a beginner to Youtube SEO I'd recommend to go for low competition terms with around 2000-5000 exact searches monthly. If you target keywords like "clickbank product review" then you will have a tough time ranking because there are most likely already a lot of videos competing.

In your videos you should answer some sort of question or solve a problem that the target market has (research these) and then have a call to action to click your link below for more information after you do a quick review of the cb product.

The important part is to give some upfront value and then do a short review of the product and why it's so great...

  • This isn't a popular way to earn affiliate commissions, but this is what I did (and what we're still doing):

=>> I cold contacted prominent system security software development corporations and presented a content development proposal to them with an innovative offer:

    • I sign up as their affiliate, write the onsite content they need for their network of sites and blogs, post it with my affiliate link, get paid for my work at a fixed $X-per-word rate, promote on my own (for as long as I want to earn affiliate commissions) the onsite content I write and poste for them, earn affiliate commissions for each product sale generated by the content I write and post for them, inform them that I have a company with trained inhouse writer employees, trainors, Q/A associates, managers, supervisors and administrative staff that have experience in online content marketing, traffic generation, onsite/offsite SEO and whitehat backlink building, and tell them that our price-per-word rate for this will significantly go down with larger project-based orders or even much lower for long term contracts. So, what happened?

=>> We got long term contracts with many system security development corporations (most implemented massive offline and online marketing campaigns for their latest software products), our company grew (in less than 5 months) from 4 work at home moms and dads (my wife and I included) to more than 80 employees and more than 60 subcontractors and more than 10 subcontractor companies each with their own staff of more than 10 employees, lots of product sales for them, one product of which became the world's best selling Microsoft Windows System Registry cleaner software of all time in 2007, passive income from constant affiliate product sales generated by the content we wrote and posted for them during this time (we still write and post content for them with this system), and we still do this for most of our long-time clients and new customers (growth and expansion plans are of course constantly implemented)...

Hope this helps some warriors, especially content developers, to try out a new opportunity that can make them earn income from their content development services and passive income from affiliate product sales generated by the content materials they develop (and market on their own) for their clients...
