How to find a suitable mentor? Getting (back) into the game...

Ok, this is a question I've had on my mind since I first got into IM back in late 1999.

How does one go about finding a suitable (and willing) mentor in this industry?

You see, I used to make a full time living on IM from 2000-2007 before opting for a steadier income in the realm of the 9-5 day job. A decision I don't necessarily regret, but would have rather avoided if only it was safe enough.

You see, although I had enough success to live comfortably (it's relative, I know) doing IM, my earnings were so unreliable and unpredictable that ultimately I turned to "classic" employment when my wife and I decided to have children. My earnings could swing from $50/month to $10,000/month several times in any given year (it was usually about $800 to $3,000 though).

Now I'm seriously considering getting back into the game (because I utterly LOVE it), but it's been a long time, and I was obviously doing something wrong (or not 100% right) before so continuing bad habits is no way to build a future.

So, how does one go about finding a suitable mentor in this field? What is expected of the teacher, and what is expected of the pupil?

I'm sure there are a lot of others asking the same question. :-)

Thanks for your time.
Pete

Pete somebody who averaged $800 to $3,000 a month a couple of years ago is not a newbie

You need to first determine whether you want to make some money by driving traffic to your own product offers or to other people's offers.

Start with the end in mind as the late, the great Stephen Covey said.

Once you pick a model, it will be easier to plan out your own individual roadmap.

Abul, good point about picking the business model in advance.

If someone asked me 5 years ago I would have said I wanted to promote CPA offers. Now I'm leaning more toward creating and marketing my own software and digital products... but CPA is such an awesome model if you get it right! ;-)

I'm not a newbie but I do think external input and even guidance can help everyone grow and prosper. That way my biggest mistake back in the day, I wanted to take on the world myself. While I admit that with the successes came overwhelming satisfaction and pride, I feel the journey could have been made more prosperous and quite frankly easier had I shared it with someone and accepted guidance.

Not only that, IM can get lonely! There are still not too many of us around and if you work from home it gets even worse.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts. :-)

CPA is a brilliant model, if you can differentiate from all the spammers and morons who rank crappy sites and put content locks on them, until you complete a survey.

IM can get lonely, which is why you should always have a social life!

In terms of business models, being the producer has always been the most rewarding for myself. Not only do you control the products, but you also build a personal following that is priceless. As long as you stay loyal to your list, your list will stay loyal to you and you can guarantee an income for life.

With the advance of social media in the past couple of years, it has become a lot easier to brand yourself and to create a cult following.

So if your software is good, it will be easy for you to become known as the software guy in your niche - which is what you need to pick next

He also offers a personal mentoring service. Chris is rated as the #1 Internet Marketing Coach by IM Report Card.

Martin, interesting website. The offer seems alright too, a straight forward step by step into IM... despite my previous "IM life", I might actually follow through with something like this just to see where it takes me. :-)

Abul, I agree 100% and that's one of the reasons I have a desire to go down the "product creation" road in the future. On a side note, the "spammy" sites you talk about really are a major pain in the ass but can also make a lot of money. I know people who have purchased homes with similar strategies! I've avoided splogs (spam-blogs) generally but if you build them right (include mashups and other content/services), they can (almost) provide value to visitors AND make cash. I digress... :-)

I can imagine it being a lucrative model, but with the latest Google crackdown, I don't think splogs are a great industry to be in at the moment.

Well I like to see people take action so all the best and keep us updated with your progress
