Should part of the main keyword of my site include blog?

Ok, so I found a keyword that has 1600 exact searches and let's just say my site is called watersportsblog.com The keyword I'm targeting is water sports blog for instance.

Now my question is, is this a bad tactic? Because it's hard to include water sports blog within the content of my website without sounding unnatural and spammy. Would I be better off targeting something like water sports or water sports tips, which has a lot more searches but way more competition? At least then it can be naturally written in the content. What are people's thoughts?

    I think there are two aspects here:

    1. The word 'blog' in your domain might seem spammy to search engines. I think this is a bit unlikely, as I've seen tons of the domains with the word blog in it on the top of search results.

    2. The domain might turn off some potential visitors. That again is secondary if your content is good. Ample number of blogs exist that have the word 'blog' in the domain. Never bothered me : -)

    Word to the wise... stay away from exact match domains. If your main keyword phrase is "water sports blog", you may want to choose some other name in light of the new google update cracking down of emd's.

    Use some other variation, but you can still target that particular phrase provided you included LSI keywords in your content. Also you need to diversify your anchor text meaning don't just use your main keyword when backlinking. Put some of the LSI keywords to work as well.
