Stupid noob question: Automated page views -- why?

OK, I'm not really a complete noob, but a question has come up for me that has my kind of scratching my head, and searching for the answer on Google was no help.

I've been playing a lot with tools like YouLikeHits, AddMeFast, SocialClerks, etc., lately (getting excellent results, btw, in boosting rankings, across the board). One thing that has me kind of baffled is the automated URL viewing. What benefit does that have to the recipient of those views? I can't see how it helps with Google. I'm not sure how it would even help with Alexa if the person isn't using the Alexa toolbar.

What's the benefit of just getting views to your site? I can maybe see it with YouTube videos, but for just a website, how does completely un-targeted, or even automated, traffic do anything other than put additional load on your server?

    Perception makes reality.

    with high views, likes, fans,etc. the site owner convinces a real user that his/her site is valuable and lot of people likes it. That's what I see.

    If you wanted to scam some advertiser or potential acquirer for the website, it would inflate your web stats to make the site seem more popular than it is. Which isn't ethical, obviously. There's no other benefit to traffic that does nothing but load pages without interacting with the site. Just additional load, like you said.

    Good place to market other automated services to users... say you have a twitter auto like type site, have it auto viewed on other sites.

    But really, its mostly people just wasting time and money. Don't ask, people are always doing dumb stuff.

    All these automated traffic is nothing but wastage. Because they are mostly bot views and they can never bring any value in the website's ranking. Google does not like such traffic sources and can hammer your ranking.

    Frankly, most of the people here above don't know what they are talking about.

    People are not getting fake views to get sales or customers from it. They are doing it to get higher search engine rankings both in Google and Youtube. As more views a Video has the better chances are there it would get ranked well. And once it is ranked you'll get automated traffic from real people and that's when you make money.

    Spend $10 to get 5,000 views and if it helps in ranked why not. You'll make much more when you get real visitors.

    Now don't say its blackhat, anything that works is good. In that case, you can SEO is also blackhat because we are all manipulating search engine to get higher rankings.
