Converting a word 2003 document to a word 2007/2010 doc

I have a written document in MS Word 2003 format. It needs to be converted to MS Word 2007 or 2010. I was considering purchasing the latest Microsoft Office software (containing word 2010), or getting Word 2007. I am not an expert in Office, but I am also weighing the prudence of purchasing the latest Office software just for Word 2010.
I would also like to know how I would convert my word 2003 doc to a 2007 or 2010 doc with the upgraded software... Thank you for your assistance.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, then go and download the consumer preview of Office 2013. Load your document in to Word 2013, then save it out as a .docx job done!

      The perfect way of conversion.

You can go to Zamzar - convert document, eBook, image, audio and video - free online file conversion and convert your doc file there to a docx file.

Out of curiosity, why would you want to convert a file for? The latest version of Microsoft Word will be able to open a file made in the 2003 version.

I thought there was a compatibility download for 2003 which allows you to use and save in docx, but I could be wrong.

Whether it's .doc or .docx it shouldn't matter. New versions of Windows open it just as easily (by just clicking on it). New versions of Word still open .rtf and other formats that you don't see too often.

Word 2003, which the original poster is using, cannot open .docx files without installing the compatibility pack. However, even though it can then open a .docx file, it cannot then save it again as a .docx. Nothing at all to do with Windows.

    Wizman,

To the best of my knowledge, word has ****NEVER**** reduced the ability of a format! That means that 2003 WILL convert cleanly to the latest version. Newer versions of word can AUTOMATICALLY read older versions. And each version can write out most versions up to and including the same version that they are. The compatibility problem is when you save a NEWER format to an older one. Some older formats just CAN'T handle newer features. That is one reason why newer formats are created. Saving a NEW word document with OLE to the first word version will TRASH your document, since all the OLE won't be supported and will be dropped. Saving it to text will drop ALL formatting, pictures, etc... since it doesn't support that.

MANY open source versions can do SUCCESSFUL conversions, though THEY may have slight differences over word.
