How bad is my niche site?

From what I can see, this looks to be primarily an adsense site. To be completely honest, your site doesn't look that bad. At least you have decided to take action. It looks clean and the layout is fine.

If I were you, I would add just a few more images and maybe change the header to more of a video game style theme. Finally, I would just say to continue to add more keywords and add content around those keywords for more chances to rank in the serps.

Its a start a the very least and that is more than most so give yourself a pat on the back :-)

I personally dont like sites that have white text and black backgrounds..... I find it strains my eyes and that is an instant put off for me....

I would probably go for a more corporate theme :-)

I also put the site map link in the footer and I only have a link to my privacy policy in my site map I tend not to show it anywhere else :-)

In my experience the adsense ads have always performed better if they are text ads....

I would also try and read up on the best adsense positions as that would help.. and seeing as this is a new site I would probably remove the ads altogether for a couple of months while you are building traffic to the site...

Its a good start and if you keep pushing on and working on the site I am sure you will be happy when the traffic starts to roll in

I'd recommend you to update your logo on top of the banner. Since you have a game niche, make your visitors feel that they are in a game niche website. How do you do that? As mentioned by our fellow Warrior, you need to add more eye-catching images and work on the overall design of your website. Though you are using a theme, I'm sure you can customize that, or at least, have someone customize it for you.

Plus, don't forget to write content that revolves around your keyword. Don't write spammy content, however, Write naturally.

Hi, thanks for all the replies guys!

I went with a black background because I like it more, and in the game development industry you find a lot of tools have a similar scheme as well, and my target audience is probably 15-30 anyway which I think looks more contemporary.

I'll probably lower it to 1 add for the homepage and then content adds in the posts individually. I also looked for other wordpress themes, but I felt the basic or "twenty eleven" theme was simple and great looking. I also tried to look for nice images similar to "game design" not just screen shots of games. Also, there are 3 random ones, which display randomly with each page load.

Any other input would be very helpful, thanks!

Find a new theme!

And yes, the black background with white text hurts my eyes after a while.

Create a Logo, a brand. That people can trust or at least feel like you're an authority.

  I agree. Not every site that is exact match domain will be hit by this latest google update. I believe the more competitive the keyword phrase, the greater the chance of being affected.
  
  Just look at product launch jacking sites for instance. Most of those sites are emd's and manage to rank highly because there is little competition at first. Game designer salary gets good searches per month but show up as only medium competition. Since this is really not a "buyer keyword", I can see why the op chose to go the adsense route.

Poor sites on EMD's have lost their earlier artificial EMD advantage; they haven't been "hit really bad".

I went on your site and the ads showing were for Mature dating and AVG anti virus.

Adsense doesn't have a good CPC for the gaming niche, so you probably would do better with CPA offers.

I will be honest with you here.

I really don't like sites that have a black background and white text. It should be black test and white background.

The graphic where you have the BIG house with the fence around it should be lower in size or get rid of it.

I would then add a newsletter form where I would follow up with subscribers about this topic.

And last, if you want to make money with Google Adsense ads then add 2 more to the page. One at the top and one at the bottom. If this is your main focus of revenue then go ahead.

You said you want comments related to keywords and not design. Hmmm... Typical. If the design is poor it doesn't matter how well your keywords are working. Your design is actually decent but the white text against black background is a loser. It's hard to read.

Sure, it looks cool to you but visitors are more interested in getting your content than seeing how trick your site is. And this isn't just me talking. There have been many tests run on this and people find this particular (white on black) layout problematic.

Create a sig file and put the link in there. It's allowed as long as you don't abuse the privilege.

As for the site, it's much improved. If I were you I'd create a section titled, What We Do. Put a link up top for it. Then give your visitors a brief explanation of the purpose of the site. You can also get a plugin that will allow people to get an email message when you update any of your pages or add new content. You should put that in there too. Nice work.

Thanks! The adsense plugin I have inserts it into "posts" and they appear on the front page.. I don't like it either but that's something I'm going to fix as well. I was thinking of having one on front page on the "sidebar" and then inserted into posts when you view then individually. Do you think that would be nice?

Its hard to say without seeing :-)

the other thing is what looks "nice" might not actually work so you are going to have to test and whatever makes more money is the one you should consider :-)

But on a side note... make sure you build the site for the user and not for money or for google
