I put up a blog and article along with a few book marks for each. My blog hasn't even gotten to the first 30 pages of my niche but my article made it to the 4th and even my book marks are up on page 6 and 8. Wth?

I'm still not yet sure how to seo with wordpress. So far my blog has 8 or 9 pages, along with 2 post. My first post page is the site that I'm getting traffic to. I'm still not sure how to work this thing, should I be putting more posts or pages. So far I made a page for each post (instead of putting up a blog post) then I copy pasted all my pages to my only post. I'm starting to think the reason my blog is not ranked is because it only hase one (really long) post, though I thought pages would get me up the seo.

Anyone ever seo'd a wordpress blg? or is just weaker than any other site?

It can take months to get ranked - you just need to keep working on your blog. In the meantime, get the Wordpress plug in called the All in One SEO pack, that will help.

IMO, the problem is not WP. The power of a blog as your site is the ability to publish your articles as posts and time them when you want them published.

For the comments below I am assuming you are self-hosting one, not using wordpress.com. I am assuming you also picked a good keyword.

1 - Use pages for Contact, Privacy Policy, About Me, FAQ, and a storefront if you have one. (bolded ones are required for Google)

2 - Your articles should be posts, not pages. Time their publishing to appear natural. Add one or two a week.

3 - Make sure you are using a custom permalink structure (under "settings" click "permalinks") and set it to use /%postname%/

4 - Make sure you have SEO All in One Pack installed and set how you want the title bar to appear for each post and page.

5 - Use your keyword in your page/post title, article title, and keyword fields. Make sure your article title is in an H1 tag so Google knows its important.

Don't blame WP. There are hundreds of warriors using WP everyday and ranking with it and making great money.

        Wordpress FTW!

Anyway, the reason why your articles and social bookmarking sites pages are ranking higher than your site is because their domain name has more authority compared to yours. One of the reasons is because they have been around for quite some time.

        Keep building links, mate.

there is (almost) no SEO needed for WP if you have the few needed plugins, like AiOS or Platinum Seo. Rather focus on a consistency of good, unique content.

Really, the times of heavy on-site SEO tweaking as was needed 5 year ago are long over.

That being said, there are and there might still be some methods (keyword: siloing...etc..etc..)...but overall you're off best just put good content on there and dont worry about other things too much.

Alright So what are all the ways you can build links.

I got some from articles, feeds (i think), social bookmarking. Are those the only ways?

I will put in the SEO plug in I hope it doesn't cost anything.

That's exactly what you should be expecting. The article directories have been around a whaile, puplishing fresh content on a regular basis and at a fast clip. Your blog has been around a week and has no authority yet.

The real power of WordPress is that your articles will continue to rank long after any given article on an article directory has slid off the page.

Ok, wait a minute... your articles and bookmarks are ranking well, and there's a problem?

Sure, it would be nice to have your blog rank higher but if ANYTHING you do that points back to your blog is ranking higher, then keep doing THAT and it will give your site more authority so that it will continue to rise in the rankings.

Some here have said that SEO isn't such an issue any more if you have the appropriate plug-ins, however, you could either have too MUCH keyword density, or your keywords could be TOO WIDE. I can't say from here.

However, when you get a chance, go to HitTail - Keyword Tool for Long Tail Marketing Strategy and install their code. This will help you figure out if you are getting any longtail keyword traffic from the search engines. Then you can begin tailoring your site more towards those longtail keywords and virtually own those highly targeted niches.

    Good luck,
    Eric

Excellent point. I don't care what is ranking where so much as long as whatever is ranking leads to where I want it to lead, esp. in the beginning.

Later on, it's nice when you see your blog's version of an article start out above the Article Directory version, but ultimately as long as they are all driving the traffic to where you want it, rock on.

Exactly... after reading the o.p., I started wondering if I was missing something by not understanding why the o.p. was upset.

    1 week?

OK. get the all-in-one SEO plugin for your WP blog

    then start link building
then start pinging technorati.com/ping and blogsearch.google.com
then start submitting your blog to as many blog/rss directories as you humanly can (for more backlinks and traffic)
then, start twittering every time you post a blog

use widgetbox (google it) and create a widget for your blog using your blog's RSS feed
encourage other people to post it on their websites, facebook profiles, myspace pages, etc. helps add the backlinks

that's about all you really can do. the biggest thing you is just start slapping your blog's URL wherever you comment, wherever you post, and pretty much wherever you go.

I don't know of one place that I've been to on the internet where I don't have my URL somewhere somehow.

Wordpress doesn't suck. Google loves it. Build a few links every day for 6 months and see if you'll see results. Try blog commenting on dofollow blogs. I've found that to be a very quick and easy way to build links. Just be sure you leave good comments so they don't get deleted. Make some of your articles into slide shows and use tubemogel to get them out to a bunch of video sites.. That works well too.

I think I see what the problem is, given the Subject line of this thread: you know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous!

Don't worry, I was there once myself. Keep working and learning.

Also, I'd be careful about taking swipes at things that you don't really understand. Saying that Wordpress sucks just because you didn't get instant gratification does not reflect well upon you.

You'll need to follow the instructions, but once you activated the plugin, you can add unique titles, descriptions to each post you make. Wordpress is great, but it's only as good as how you implement it, so you'll need to utilize all the available plugins, have your posts optimized, and build backlinks to your main site and inside pages to see results.

Wordpress is AWESOME. Just make a few tweaks on the backend and add a few plugins. As already suggested, the Platinum SEO is a good plugin to use. It will add meta descriptions to each page based off the post's tags, allow you add keywords and and a description to your main page, as well as configure a setup to your liking. But you have to expect that the articles that you specifically set out to promote and bookmark are going to rank higher than a site you are letting rise naturally I would imagine.

I'd have thought that was your biggest problem (not just for SEO - your site navigation must be a nightmare). Why aren't you just posting in the conventional fashion? Each post is food for hungry search engines, and they like to eat little and often like the rest of us. If you keep stuffing all your pages into one post (I can't think why), you'll give Google belly ache

Oh no it is not Wordpress Which Sucks :-)

You just need to take few steps to optimize your wordpress blog for SEO.
Like install and activate some SEO plugins already suggested above...

Also you may need to fix your wordpress theme to show only excerpts
at homepage and let the post pages get whole unique content accessible
    only from one url.

Also While you are posting you also need to make sure you put your right
keywords in titles and post slugs... Also please clean up the post slugs and
remove all unnecessary words from the Post Slugs..
(I just today made post at my blog regarding this issue:
Post Slugs - Post Urls Keep Them Short | Wordpress Blog by PressGold
    )

Also You need to get backlinks to your blog and posts... After you have made the post,
make sure you ping your blog from some site like Blog and ping | Pingoat
and also social bookmark your posts and oh yeah add link to your newly posted post
in your forum Sig file to get this indexed asap...

It is going to take some time when you see the result of your efforts..
    so be consistent...

    Wish you best,
    Mohsin

It all depends on the competition. If there are a lot of similar articles, yours may not rank well given it hasn't been around for long.

WordPress has a lot of SEO built in, but you need to tinker with it to find out how to make the most out of it. Word Press isn't the easist the program to set up though. SEO takes even more time and patience.

Wordpress is the best SEO software that you can ever get, provided you know how to use it. Please search for "Wordpress SEO" and you will find several places where you will learn the in and out of it (This is no place for coaching on all the little things that you need to do). Having said that here's a small checklist
    a) Your posts should have a title that has your keyword.
    b) Your permalink structure should be correct
    c) You must associate the correct tags with each post. The post much contain these tags (you can say that tags are just like keywords)
    d) Enable the Wordpress SEO plugin
    e) Have the Akismet plugin to prevent spammy comments
    f) Post at least twice per week, unique posts that revolve around your theme (keyword list)
    g) Use free tools like Fast Blog finder to find similar blogs and post your comments on them that link back to your wordpress blog
    h) Use a Statcounter plugin to monitor the visitors.
    i) Use pinging plugins to ping your blog posts to the search engines
    j) Submit your blog to a few good blog directories
    h) enable your RSS feed and connect it via feedburner
After you do all of this you will have to wait at least a few weeks to see any results. Hope it helps you

And I saw another thread about WordPress versus Blogger.

Unlike Blogger, WordPress gives you control. But with control comes responsibility. And effort. And work.

I can now set up a WordPress blog in a very short time. And have several plugins installed and operating. And install a great theme. And make a few tweaks to the css file and theme php pages...all in a short time.

But ask me how many WordPress blogs or WordPress CMS themes have I installed? How many hours did I labor trying to get Aweber lightbox to work over a flash slideshow? lots and lots....

You have to pay your dues.

      There is no free lunch.

A business, a real business, is going to cost you something. Money, or time, and both.

Yes, SEO is rocket science. But the great thing is, on this forum, you get a world class education about on-line marketing - for free!

So spend the time reading and asking questions in this forum. There are a lot of great people here willing to help. For example, you may not know it, but Vince Runza is a bonifide stealth guru, with real, practical information. He doesn't have a groupie following, but he walks the talk. And he is really interested in helping other marketers succeed. There are many more like Vince on this forum. (Well, not exactly like Vince...check out LocalBizBuilders and see what he is up to).

Post your specific WordPress SEO issue here and we will see if we can help you out.

Good luck. You can do this.

      -Mike D.

P.S. WordPress is an awesome website building platform...if you work it...and really know what you want to do.
