Issue with grammar mistakes

Dear Warriors,

I think this question has been asked in the past by someone, so please forgive me for asking it again.

I would like to know warriors opinion on the subject.

Do you think think grammatical mistakes is issue in terms of SEO?
Will grammar mistakes in content have some sort of negative affect?

Please let me know your opinion on this.

Many Thanks

In my opinion, the most important thing you can do for SEO is make your website perfect for readers. That really means grammatical errors have got to go, as they can make it very difficult to read. If it's even a bit of a struggle to read the reader will more than likely be hitting the back button, which isn't good news.

To me grammar mistakes are bad news, particularly when you are trying to sell something. With SEO if you are appealing to the search engines then it is not so bad, but if you are trying to target real people with your SEO then the grammar can be a problem.

The issue is that grammar errors, like spelling mistakes can act as pattern interrupts. This means that you're getting someone into the buying mood and then they hit one of these errors and it can jar them out of the buying mood.

Also if they see bad grammar then they will associate that with poor quality, which in turn they will associate that with whatever you are promoting.

I always try to make the grammar / spelling as good as I can. If you are writing in a language that isn't your native language, get someone to just check it over for you - either a native speaking friend or hire someone on Fiverr to do it for you.

The people with the credit cards generally do care about grammar and having it right means you appeal much more to them and they are more likely to continue to your site and buy.

    Good luck with it!

    Jason

CodeBotics and Jason Johns are right..I think it's a pretty basic requirement for any content to be spell checked and grammar checked. It's not so much the SEO, it's about making an impression to your readers. You wouldn't want to come off as unprofessional because of a few spelling and grammar errors...

    Good luck with that datingworld.

Yes it makes a huge difference.. You need to look professional to succeed. (My opinion)
Just copy and paste your content into microsoft word and run spell check, that might help you out a bit

I do, actually, but whether it has a negative effect on SEO doesn't really matter anyway.

SEO is just a way of trying to get one specific type of traffic (search-engine traffic) to your site. When any sort of traffic gets to your site, if there are grammatical mistakes on it, that's going to lose you readers, return visitors, opt-ins, conversions and sales anyway, however you look at it.

If your content isn't grammatically correct, SEO is the least of the your problems!

Thanks Alexa, I am already fan of yours.

In my case, I drive traffic to dating sites...Most people are quite eager to Sign Up after being directed to dating sites from Google in response to search made by them..

Do you think Grammar mistakes will drive them away.......?

I'm not sure, and I'm not in your niche. But my guess is that grammatical mistakes will matter quite a bit less, for driving traffic to dating CPA offers, than they would where you're list-building and relationship-building and making a sale on the strength of that?

The interesting thing is that, as grammar standards fall, a person's grammar mistakes might actually be perceived as "correct" by a majority of people.

To take a simple example, how many people say "less cars" instead of "fewer cars".

Personally, I feel a few simple grammar mistakes are not as bad as English that doesn't sound natural. (Warning!! This is my opinion - I am NOT your customer).

You might want to check out my comments regarding this (and those of others) in this old thread

And anyway, there is no ONE correct English - there are many regional variations.

Write your content first in Word, the spelling checker solves most of the grammatical and spelling issues. There are still mistakes that can go overlooked, like using "meat" instead of "meet", or "bare" instead of "bear" - I saw these two in marketing newsletters.

And from there... writing is writing. If you can write in your language, you can write in any language. You will have issues with communication and a steep learning curve, but just go for it.

I have a lot of problems: prepositional verbs are soo annoying! The word "people" in English is plural instead of singular, and the list goes on and on.. but... if you like it, it ain´t so painful.

@datingword people coming to a dating site are a bit single minded to worry about grammar. I would´t sweat about it. And for SEO purposes... don´t think the algorithms are so good yet. They might in the future. I have some squidoo lenses where I went comando without my editor (lots of mistakes).. and they get good traffic.

I personally feel that it is important to have good grammar on your website or your squeeze page. On contrary to a physical product in the retail world, online products are sold in a "distant" manner, and good grammar is the few attribute(s) that distinguish the good products from the bad. IMO, Good grammar is akin to water for a fish- It simply can't live without it.

As a former magazine editor grammar mistakes bug me. You left a word out in your post and I spotted it right away! It doesn't make me think any less of you, but it does make me wish everyone would proof read before posting. I think it's important to get the grammar right, especially if you are trying to sell something! Yes, we all make typos and mistakes from time to time but we need to try hard to correct them.

The problem with what you've said, is that with a lot of grammatical errors it isn't "really readable".

At least for me it isn't. After being an editor for years and being trained to look for errors, they really jump off the page at me which in turn stops the flow of reading. If the flow is choppy, then it isn't "really readable".

    Hi Datingworld!

A few mistakes in spelling or grammar would not hurt your performance in your SEO campaign. Search engine like Google use spider bots crawling to your site. These bots are more specialized in detecting spammy content and link building rather than grammar checking.

But if your grammar is too way off, I think Google will evaluate it as a bad score in terms of your on-page SEO.

I also agree that grammar (and spelling) mistakes reduce credibility - and therefore sales.

About relying on spell checkers... They may have gotten a bit better lately, but you still can't completely rely on them because they generally only flag words that are spelled incorrectly - but they won't always catch a word that is the wrong word choice altogether.

For example, "affect" vs "effect" (both of them are perfectly good words and are spelled correctly, but you can't substitute one for the other - and they are frequently mixed up). And if you use "affect" in a sentence where "effect" is called for or vice versa, you've got a spelling error that most spell checkers won't catch.

So having a good dictionary and thesaurus is still a must.

As usual, Alexa has the right idea. Who cares about your SEO if your readers (= potential customers) are going to be turned off by poor spelling/grammar? What's the point of driving thousands of visitors to your site if none of them (or significantly fewer of them) are going to buy?

I'm sure we've all seen seen thousands of pages that rank highly even when they are littered with errors so I don't think grammar is a strong signal (if at all) for SEO. But to me the credibility of the site drops as soon as I see something that is badly written. The odd typo might not even be excusable if the site is trying to be an authority in its subject.

It's amazing that you would ask such a question. It's 2012, and there are still people in the warrior forum who believe they have to write content for Search Engines... I'm sorry, but you need to get into the Copywriting section quick.

Stop trying to make the Search Engines happy, and start focusing on your readers. It doesn't matter what the search engines want. If you don't make your readers happy, you are doomed to fail.

Besides, the more visitors you have that enjoy your website, the more that are going to share it with their social networks. This in turn shows Search Engines that your site is liked by people, which helps you rank higher.

Make sure you have places on your site for people to comment and add to a discussion. This shows that you are building a community, which Search Engines love.

It's all about your readers. Focus on them, and they'll take care of the rest.

Grammar matters, however I think it is important to have a distinction between blatant errors that turn off readers and technical errors.

And let's not forget that on any given day you can go to any of the news sites: CNN, MSNBC, NYT, WSJ, FoxNews, etc... and you can find horrible grammar and spelling. Even the headlines on page one are often incorrect.

I've written tons, including quite a few books (technical books, not in the IM space in any way), and back when I was working with publishers I was always grateful for the editors to catch my many mistakes. I write in a conversational style, and I know that I misuse the comma. I use the comma for pacing, including when it is incorrect but I want the reader to pause. I use sentence fragments. I use incorrect sentence structure.

The primary issue is your content and how it is read by your readers. Does what you produce work for your readers? Do they connect with you because of your writing, or are they turned off because of your writing? And, have any of you seen how middle school and high school kids communicate today? I'm not even sure we can call their language English anymore! ;-)

I don't think grammatical errors have much effect on SEO. As an example, if I search for a certain brand of a CCTV camera, what shows up on page one are websites featuring Chinese manufacturers. Their grammar is atrocious! That, however, does not stop people from reading and buying their stuff, me included. Write for people, not the search engines.

Having said that, many people get put off by the mistakes (especially if they are many) and may not get to digest the message you're trying to pass across. It would be wise to brush up your skills as you work on your sites. You shouldn't have to wait until you're a PRO to start writing. You get better by writing more and having someone assist in pointing out the mistakes, while giving suggestions on how to do it better. Good luck!

That is not always the case, there is a balance between form and substance that keeps or rejects your reader. If the article has enough "substance" and "soul", the mistakes do not affect their respect for you. Some do contact you with a revisited version, but that is about it. It does have to be readable and do not have kicks in the guts grammar-wise, but readers tend to be forgiving when they find something that is essentially good for them.

Now, if you are using content that has nothing of the above... then you better make it pretty and put a nice bow on it.

If you have time, have a look at this:

      What is an empath?
