Are there any free places online to advertise your business that are really worth it? Has anyone else had success with any of these places?

Yes, there are quite a few places which are worth for it.
You may put your advertisements in the offer section of the forum related to your niche. This will be useful for both advertising and SEO. However, make sure you read the rules and regulations of the forum board.
Apart from that, you can put your ads in some quality classified sites and yellow pages, where people may look for your kind of service. The Craiglist is one the best option to put free ad. Having said, it requires lot of verifications etc.

The best way is to post advertisements on forums. I agree with jameer. On many forums there is a special section where you can offer services and get many visitors from them!

AngieJS, there are many design forums where people offer its service! And you can go to some freelance sites, like odesk.com

What has help me with advertising my graphic services is posting classified ads on place like gum tree US free ads.com and craigslist
