Add-on membership: upsell or on main sales page?

I'm launching a product soon that will have a core product as well as an add-on recurring membership site for people who want to take the material to the next level. I'll test both options, but in general...

If you're purchasing a product and there's an add-on membership, are you more likely to purchase the add-on membership if you see the membership listed on the main sales page (1 buy button for core product and 1 buy button for core product + membership), as an upsell after you already made the decision to purchase the core product, or does it not make a difference?

    I think it depends on the product. If it's something that's highly profitable, but little is known about how to get the most out of it, then a membership would be ideal.
