Getting into list building and have a question about the "free gift"

Hi all,

I'm going to attempt to build a list, let's say it's the "blue widgets" niche...

I have an ebook written, it's about 60 pages and the content is pretty good, not earth-shattering but on par with whatever others are selling.

This ebook covers "blue widgets", but it also offers information on "red widgets" and a few other topics that are very much in the "widget" realm, topics that I may want to build separate lists for, or even products.

The million dollar question is: Do I give away the entire 60 page ebook or cut it up into smaller chunks and give away only the relevant section??

I was also thinking about giving away one section but then giving away the entire book to my more loyal list members (say after someone has been on the list a few weeks they get rewarded with the full product).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Pete

Breaking it up will and targeting the prospect for the specific widget will provide you with a better ROI but possibly reduce your audience size. I have always used an upsell toward the end of the autoresponder series that touches on the other widgets. If they have not purchased by your seventh message (standard ROI % wise), you either need to look at re-editing the messages or moving the prospect into other widget interests...

I think this is a very good question. I would either break it down and give it to them as an email course/report/guide - this will keep leads on list for longer, or I would give it as a bonus with a purchase of my front end or similar product.

This is one tricky area when to an offer for list building.

      I like this idea.

What I would do personally is to take the "blue widget" part and offer that to them as an incentive to get them onto your list.

Then I would take the "red widget" section and offer that up in a future email.

To use IM as an example, you could offer up an ebook on 'How to get your wordpress site setup" and this would be your incentive to get them to join your list.

Then you send them a few emails, and at some point in the future you send them your "red widget" section, which could be on "SEO"

So then you would say, "Hey everyone, by now you should have your sites setup, so this would be the perfect time to talk about SEO. I create a book specifically for you that would help. Check it out here."

      That's just one example.

      Hope it helps

Split it up. Give away a short report, leave out key sections of your main report. Whet the appetite, keep them interested. Or, send them the report in sections/chapters over a number of days, build up to a sale towards the end of your series. There are lots of options, and lots of super threads related on here. Good luck.

  • Hi Pete

What I have found the "FREE GIFT" for signing up needs to be of good value to your gain your subscriber.

It really depends on how good your eBook is? As you could set it up in a way that gives the the 1st ten or so pages for subscribing, and then over a period of time give each section through your auto responder follow ups.

This will enable you to keep them for longer and potentially market them in the process.

I hope this helps you? But if you need anything just message me I would be pleased to help.

    Best regards

If you have a high quality e-book that is on a par with
what other people are selling then I would recommend
that you sell your copy too.

    Why?

That way, you get to build a BUYERS list.

(A buyers list is worth way more than a freebie list).

If I were in your shoes, I would take a look at all of the
information that you have in the e-book and separate out
what you can give away and what you can hold back to
    then sell.

For example, you could give away a brief report that
demonstrates that you understand the needs of your
target market and also proves your credibility. Then
close out the report with an offer for people to buy
    your front-end e-book.

By the way - don't call it an e-book as it devalues your
    content.

In terms of process, a good flow is to take people from
the Squeeze Page > Special Offer to Buy Your e-Book.

Those who buy, get added to your Customer List and
those who don't buy get added to your Prospect List
and receive a sequence of e-mails to give them good
content and relevant offers to buy your front-end
    e-book.

That way, you get to build a list of prospects and customers
and let people choose when they're most ready to buy.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

I would do what Shaun recommends above - but I would make sure that the giveaway product solves just one problem, is easily read, digested and has actionable items in it - and then I would say all that in the squeeze page. People are inundated with information today - your giveaway should have a call to action in the beginning, middle and end - to the product you are selling. AND, if the giveaway is long (like more than 10 pages) people are more likely to "file" it on their hard drive to read later.

And later, most likely, never comes! Now you've lost a great opportunity to show them how much you know, how you can help and how well you understand their problem. Your email autoresponder should be addressing those issues also - but why not use the giveaway product too?

    Wow, what great responses!

Most of you have confirmed my initial thoughts that it should be split up... so I'm going to listen to the majority here and partition the book into smaller chunks.

All of the sections are very closely related to one another and I will be using them as free gifts to draw in prospects for my main niche. My main concerns were:

    - is 60 pages too long for a free giveaway? (nobody will read)
    - should I give away only some of it and use the rest as part of my auto responder?
    - can I cut out the most valuable part and re-market it later as a product?

    I think I have my answers. :-)

    Cheers,

      Hi Pete

Let's start with the first question: Yes 60 pages... in times when Youtube is #2 search engine it's a bad idea! (but that depends if your market is inclined more to reading and if the niche needs more reading).

2nd You should completely give it away as your auto responder. This way you will educate them to open your e-mails. If you give a crappy part of the book immediately then they will not see you as someone worthy of their attention. It's best to start with the best because they will expect more from you...

      3. I don't know the third one because If you cut the most valuable part, will people still want to give you their e-mail address? I mean, is that lead magnet so powerful that you will have good conversions. Break into their mindset, their demographics and go from there.

I would suggest breaking it into pieces over a drip campaign (autoresponder) + consider adding more info, within your niche of course. We started building a list early this year and we've had great success. We made a commitment to our subscribers (and ourselves) to provide nothing short of extreme value. I think it was Frank Kern who always talked about results in advance..... we believe in value in advance. At the end of the day, we're all just content creators - not unlike Hollywood producers, we're always thinking about growing our audience and providing extreme value. With a large enough fan base or subscriber list (freebie or buyer), there is always money. We just choose to focus on our fans/subscribers needs and wants before our own. [stepping down off soapbox] Hope this help and best of luck!

give away your ebook as your free offer and then create a quality video course as your paid product (if possible)

i have found that most people prefer to learn by watching a video anyway

within your ebook you can include links to the videos then once your report gets passed around you will then make more sales from your paid product not to mention you will make sales from the people that actually opt in to get it as well

it all comes down to your free offer though, this is why it has to be quality otherwise people are not going to want to upgrade to your video course

If you have a 60 page ebook on par with what the competition is selling, and you are going to split it up for your AR series, I'm just curious what the product is?

Breaking it up and releasing it over time will give the appearance of a continous flow of content. They will know they can rely on you, especially if it is released at regular intervals.

The key is good content. Always. A continous release of good content will earn you trust within your list.

    Hello Op,

I didn't see it mentioned, but maybe it was:

The only issue with breaking up content or an ebook to give away AND sell is that sometimes people feel a bit cheated if you only dole out part of an entire system for free and then ask them to pay for the other part.

In other words, you want your OTO or paid product to be complimentary, not a bigger version. I saw a post on the WF one time that put it simply. Something to the extent of instead of offering a "super size" or "double burger" as your paid product - as compared to the regular burger or regular size that you are offering free..... offer instead a complimentary product that goes with your free product. In this case, if your burger is free, add a side of fries and a coke to round it out.
