How to leverage my list? Moderate understanding of internet marketing.

I have a brick and mortar business and I have recently reached a partnership agreement with an online travel business who has a comprehensive double opt-in email list of users from the UK and the US. I have carte blanche as to how I leverage this list and would like to hear some suggestions on what you might do in my position. The list breakdown is as follows.

7.2 mil unique double opt-in email (email only)
credit card holders(presumably adults 18-80)
online travel
primarily UK and US

Please note I am not looking to sell this list.

Thank you for any help in the brainstorming process.

S.

First thing is to find out what they signed up for, then start providing them with it. Look for complementary products and interleave them with the content. You almost cannot fail with a list of that size provided that they are active and responsive.

Thanks for the Reply Will, they basically signed up for promotions from the travel company and third party promotions. I think anything within a travel related genre would work well. I realize that the list is very large and I don't want to screw it up ...and the emails would be quite clean and fresh. My concern is that i want to not only leverage the list, but also continue building it so that it doesn't become stale. Any suggestions on affiliate programs/products that would be well suited in this regard.

      TIA

you can try websites like linkshare that have a variety of web based affiliate programs. You can also start a blog with your list and have your list visit your blog to get an income off of google ads. You just need to make sure the blog is targeted to those people.

I would maybe send them interesting and valuable content on places to visit and travel ideas.Within the emails you can then promote various products and services (travel insurance, jabs etc, forex).

You need to make sure these emails are fun and people enjoy them.

Best idea is to look at what competitiors are doing like kuoni etc and get some ideas from them. Also look at niche travel bloggers for ideas and inspiration.

If your goal is to make immediate sales, then do the following...

Mail them a freebie. Then when they click on that, have a page where you gather a lot more information, including phone numbers. The few that go through that page will be very close to the end of the buying cycle. Call them and sell them something.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone...I was wondering if the following would be a possible good course of action.

Setting up a store linked to Amazon products that are travel related...something like travel guides...or travel accessories. I haven't completely thought this one through so i'm just throwing it out there.

    TIA
    S.

P.S. I have the expertise and resources to create a very professional online store that's why I was leaning in this direction.

I think if it's in traveling niche, you can send them regular newsletter that's posted in your traveling niche blog. The blog post needs to be compelling and interesting topic. In there you give some advertising like banners, affiliate links, etc.
Do it regularly, I think it'll work

No need to reinvent the wheel here. On top of what is already mentioned here, I would also recommend subscribing to the mailing lists of other major travel portals like Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline and Kayak and see what kinds of promotional emails they send out. You can model your email campaigns in the format that they use. That way you're not screwing up your list and you're also doing what already works.

    Hi Everyone,

I posted this thread quite a few months ago and since posting it I have been inundated with work and have yet to take a step forward in leveraging my list.

I realize at this point that the list is becoming stale (9 months) and I would like to revitalize it. It should be noted that the list has never been mailed to.

I am realizing due to my current career I do not have the time to properly leverage this list and would like to ask if the WarriorForum is a good place to find a joint-venture partner type arrangement? I would love to find someone who I can partner with to leverage this list or possibly hire in some capacity to leverage this list.

If anyone can steer me in the right direction that would be great.

    Thanks,
    Steve

There is a ‘Warriors for Hire’ section and there is also a JV section here at the Warrior forum. You may find help there.

      Steve,

This is just my own opinion . . .

If I had access to the list, the very first thing I would do is test a small mailing (maybe 2-3,000) with a very nice incentive or gift to join my travel newsletter list via opt-in. Test and track the results. Try different incentives. Get the very best response rates you can, then ramp up and push the whole list through your opt-in process using your highest converting test results.

Use SendGrid, SMTP, or some other service to do the mass sending.

Even if you end up losing 95% of your list, you will be left with 360,000 fresh opt-in leads that have asked to hear specifically from you. I would much rather own such a list than 7.2 million names that have probably forgotten that they agreed to 3rd party offers.

The best to you in this endeavor,

      Steve

Always remember to do three things to your subscribers: inform, entertain and recommend. As a simple rule of thumb try and base your marketing and email content around these points.

I'd consider running a survey and putting respondents in a drawing for a free trip or something. Then I'd use the survey results to segment the one big list in to many smaller & more targeted (and fresh) lists based on their survey responses.

This is very true - after 9 months most people would have forgotten about you and their parties.

Here is the most important point: all these emails represent real people. Close your eyes for a moment, and imagine what it would be like to suddenly receive an email from someone you don't know.

It better be damn worth your time, right?

Whatever you do, use a server you can easily get rid of. After 9 months, you can bet most people will just see each promo as SPAM. You don't want to be blacklisted, or marked as a SPAM sender.

After you have refined your list, using the suggestions you got here, move on to a server that you normally use.

If it is a travel list, you might consider segmenting them into different list base on their needs. The travel nice is very wide and there are many different sub niches. Segmenting them will enable you to send targeted message to each of the segment list. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you to everyone who responded, I appreciate the insight and the excellent suggestions. In follow up to some of the suggestions regarding services to use.

Steve B suggested SendGrid and SMTP...does anyone have other suggestions so that I can expand my due diligence on the services to use.

Also any suggestions on quality survey service providers?

    Thank you kindly,
    Steve
