Wondering if charities can help bring in traffic

Hello all!
I'm brand new here as well to the world of internet marketing. I thought I'd try my hand at affiliate blogging as it is also a way to get my opinion out certain products I like. As this is also my first real site, I've been struggling with ways to get it seen.

One idea I've been toying with is to go on places like facebook or twitter and advertise that, for any purchase made through my site (for the month of November), half of my profits will go to a charity that I choose (I'm thinking something related to Xmas like toys for tots). Does anyone have any experience with this? Will this backfire?

Thanks for any advice

  • It's called "cause marketing."

And it can be very successful. But it generally works best on customers you already have, because you will soon discover there is significant cost to getting the word out about your chosen charity to new prospects.

Also, existing customers have already expressed an interest in your product. Someone coming in off the street won't buy from you if they don't want/need the product, no matter what cause you're affiliated with.

So, as a traffic-generation technique it's not the best.
