Newbie entering world of Internet Marketing

Hi guys,

First I want to say that I am very impressed about this forum. I have read a lot of the threads and found some interesting information.

Now, what I am here for: I am interested about internet marketing but don't know anything about it yet. That's why sites like the one from George Brown really appeal to me because it is supposed to learn you how to use internet marketing. But since I am very new to this stuff I don't really trust this kind of sites and would like to learn more about if before I start investing in ways of internet marketing that just seem to be too good to be true.

If this is not the place to ask, just let me know and excuse me. I am really eager to learn and would love to begin using internet marketing (/affiliate marketing)

So is there anyone who can tell me where to learn the basics of this interesting stuff? I have looked all over the internet and only came across sites like Googlesniper.

I saw someone replying on a thread that this forum is the place to be.

Again, if I'm doing this totally wrong, let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Take action yes, but don't jump out and shoot yourself in the foot due to lack knowledge on the basics. I'm a newbie as well so I can relate to what Tom is saying. Fortunately I have an awesome coach (my son) as well as others here to learn from.

There are some great people here in this forum with tons of knowledge & experience. Interestingly everyone tends to do a little something different than another. What works for one may not for the other and it's good to see the variety and note what may work for me .

Yeah I am working on learning the basics as much as possible, would like to take some action soon tho.
Good to hear you have your son to coach you.

Everybody has his own way of doing things, good to see that and take bits from everyone to make your own.

    Welcome to WF!

You'll learn a lot here for sure. My biggest advice to you is to "stay away from the shining objects" in the WSO section. Don't waste your money on junk WSO - take your time to learn who the reputable merchants are.

    Best of luck!

Well i will be honest with you and say that the first ever sale i made was using a coaching program called DotComSecretsX (Type it in google, and you will find it). I think its very important to have someone to guide you, mainly to guide you to your first sale, because from there everything is down the hill. The reason i choose that one is because its by Russel Brunson(I think thats how you spell it :p), and its only $1 ! Yeah $1 for your first month ! So it doesn't require much investment.

But if you dont want to spend any money what so ever then the answers are all here, on warrior forum.

      Hi Tom,

I am a noob just like you so I will find it interesting to see the replies here. I have no idea where to start either.

I have looked at Google Sniper also and I am trying as hard as I can to "take action" but I can't get past the keyword search part. I am doing everything George said and just can't get any keyword searches within the parameters that he suggests.

I won't' hijack your thread by asking about it here but hopefully if you found anything you can let me know. I guess we can try to stumble through this together buddy!

My advice for you is to be FOCUS. There are lots of programs and businesses online but you will need to FOCUS on one at a time. is it affiliate, blogging, service providing, list building etc. just pict one of them, browse this WF and get all the details needed for it and the next part is start ACTING ON THEM. Welcome On board. As your sound, Just Keep Refreshing yourself here.

The key is to focus on one thing and make sure you master that before moving on. Too many people spread themselves too thin or try spinning too many plates at one. Work on website, get traffic to it, make money from it before you move on to the next project. It can become overwhelming with all the acronyms and various ways to get traffic, make money, etc. A lot of ways require money such as ppc ads, media buys, solo ads. SEO is the cheapest way to get started.

Lots of people say take action and i personally do not subscribe to this train of thought.

The first thing you can do is read and get an idea what you are getting into before steaming ahead. This is important because when I first started (and I'm still sort of a newbie) the promotional part of internet marketing was a horrifying experience and now that I have certain tools, my life in affiliate marketing is a lot less stressful and a lot more fun. Goodluck

Personally I am trying to get started in affiliate marketing. Tried it ones, basically stumbling in the dark, with a video game time code company website, and made a few dollars. I think literally like $3.

As I said I am trying Google Sniper but is that where I should be starting? Is it's advice dead now? Can someone point me in either a better direction or a direction that will compliment what I have learned?

    Hi welcome to the forum

    My advice is simple...

Read as much as you can, figure out what area/s you would like to work in then find an excellent coach in that field and get on his one to one coaching if you can.

I wish I had known this when I first started, an excellent coach makes all the difference, saves you time, lost effort and money.

    Good luck to you,

If you're looking into affiliate marketing and CPA my first advice is going to be learn how to build a website. Eventually you will outsource this but in the beginning it is going to be imperative to learn these tasks yourself. Affiliate sales and CPA rely a lot on split testing and optimizing the campaigns. So learn how to do that effectively also.

I am trying to recall a good course I came across a while back regarding CPA, it was called something along the lines of "Rags to Riches" by a fellow named Ken I believe.

I generally recommend finding a mentor over buying a course, though. Usually actually seeing how someone else makes lots of money will drastically decrease the learning curve.

Its all about perception. If you generally hang around people who are always broke then that becomes the norm for you and you can't possibly fathom what its like to earn lots of money. Try hanging around someone who makes 10K per day and see what that does for how you perceive the term rich. I know it was a life changer for me and revealed the one thing that had been holding me back: mindset.

        Best of luck to you.

Welcome to Warrior Forum! My advice to you is to to not get too overwhelmed with all the material you get from the forum. Stay focused on one thing then move on the to other. People sometimes try to do as much as they can at once and end up accomplishing nothing. Do things one by one and see what you actually are successful with. Always come up with real value in your work!

You first have to know where you want to go,follow a proven system and follow it through until you start to make money...do not fall for the 'magic bullet' and jump ship every time something else comes along.
If I can be of any help leave me a message on my blog and I will get back to you.

The first step is to identify an audience that needs help in a niche where you can stand out. An Internet marketing coach can help you with this.

Just doing what everyone else is doing with affiliate programs will doom you to failure. You need to find what is "uniquely you."

FANTASTIC advice and I am in the process of doing that. While trying to find out what is uniquely me I am trying to get "something" started.

IE I have in the past done retail sales and call center sales (inbound) and every good sales person MUST develop their own sales "personality" which may or may not be who they are outside of the job but it is definitely a personality related to who they are outside the job and is uniquely them.

When I started I had absolutely no experience though and I had no idea how to find that personality that was uniquely me. I was however given a good base to find out and given products and told how to sell those products. I also had managers that helped me to find my sales personality and develop it.

Right now I am looking for how and where to start. I really want to get something started so I am stuck with relying on the examples I have learned from Google Sniper 2.0 and trying to adopt them as my own for now and then learn from any mistakes I might make.

Perhaps that is a big mistake but for now I am not sure where else to start.

    Welcome!

This is a great forum. George Brown does have a great system. Essentially, anything that can go viral is a great place to start.

For instance, I just created a video, and drove some traffic to it. It was a funny video, but it went viral. I did a few things to make it search engine friendly (like adding an article with LSI Keywords and made it interesting to read). But it was the video that got people going. Right now, after 10 days, its at 1.2 million views. Fun stuff. So that's the direction I would go in. Viral is good!

This is another fantastic idea. I have had some experience making videos in the past and I had fun doing it. I don't necessarily expect you to post your video link here (I understand not wanting the "whole world" to know your secrets )

But would you consider sending me a PM with a link so I could watch and learn from it? If so thanks in advance since I don't yet have the required 50 posts to PM you back.

    Hi

I don't agree that you should read lots of stuff before getting started, you will learn more from any mistakes and you only need the budget for a domain and cheap hosting.

In the long term building a list is the way to go but building affiliate sites is a good way to get started.

There are some good tips in this thread below from another warrior and a free pdf guide.

There are 100's of ways to make money online. Like others have said, choose one, focus all your attention on it & learn as much as you can.

I found brokering to be the easiest way to start, & that's all I do at the moment & make a nice living from it. I even outsource the outsourcing so I do very little work really.

One thing I will say though, whatever service you provide, be 100% honest, 100% reliable & you'll get plenty of repeat customers.

This is definitely the place to be if you want to learn internet marketing. You will probably wind up buying a few products on here (called a "WSO"... Warrior Special Offer), and being a newbie, I'm sure that you'll find the first few products that you come across as "new". But not all WSO's are truly worthy, so don't buy everything at once.

Since I'm a total newbie I have to start from scratch. I find Affiliate marketing very interesting but apparently there are more ways of IM to make good money. Weird question; So it is true that people make a lot of money with this kind of marketing?

So I have to learn how to make a site, and then implement Affiliate marketing on it. That's why a full guide is very appealing to me. I think that's the reason why IM beginners buy guides like the one from George Brown.

So tell me, is there a way I can learn everything from the bottum up, without having to pay for some fancy looking guide? I don't mind paying tho, just want to learn everything without having the focus on the big money they talk about.

There is so much information here that it's very hard to have a good overview. I will have to get used to the forums.

My word of advice is to invest your time and money wisely and make sure you don't regret failing. Instead learn from it. Failure is path to success. I would also recommend you to get a mentor whose expert in affiliate marketing.

      Hi Refreshment,

I recommend a training program called "The Challenge", it's very good at teaching you the basics and it's totally free.

You can find it at challenge dot co (just co, not com mind you).

I'm a newbie myself and still struggling to make my first $1, but this course has definitely helped me to get started.

Right, the webinar, I forgot all about that!

Truth is, they want you to sign up so they can send you an occasional email (not a lot though).

I think I actually never got around to watching the webinar really lol... Not sure why they do these webinars at fixed times, doesn't really make sense to me. It almost put me off as well, but I decided to give it a go anyway as a good friend of mine had recommened it to me. I did complete the course and it has a lot of valuable information.

The rest of the course you can do at your own pace, it is designed to be done a day at a time investing a minimum of 30 minutes a day, for 7 weeks. Be warned that often you will be busy for a lot longer than 30 minutes if you want to do things well.

I can definitely recommend this course as it doesn't cost you anything except your email address, and it gives you pretty good, structured approach. They do offer you software that they would get commission for if you purchase it, but I did the whole course without buying anything. (well at least I am giving them some free publicity here in exchange lol)

I believe you could even just click on the "member's access" link on the top of the page, it doesn't seem to require a password... but really no harm in signing up for it, and forget about the webinar, it's not strictly necessary.

Nice tip, right on point. 100% this.

      That, and product creation.

Building a list is critical if you want to actually consider it a business. If you wait until you are 100% ready and comfortable with taking action you will never do anything. You have to venture outside your comfort zone if you want to prosper.

I agree this is a good course. Ed is a super guy with much knowledge to share. Make no mistake though he is a great businessman as well. His free training is the entry way into his sales funnel. No doubt though the Challenge contains a vast amount of information for beginners.

As for what mentor to recommend, this is a good question and it would depend on your budget and what path you decide to go down, and how much you already know. This place looks to be crawling with tons of good information. Much like the forums I come from, you need to be cautious, but find a couple people that you can trust and soak up every word they say. Don't be afraid to ask questions because we've all been in your shoes at one point in our careers. And thats why people come to forums; to offer up their advice and experience. Good luck to you.

I was just going to write a reply on The Challenge.

It is awesome, checked some of the lessons and I love it. Will be checking it from beginning to end as soon as possible. They explain everything very well, even I can understand it.

Have to get used to the fact that there is some paying involved in these lessons.

So my question: I guess paying for hosting and domains is required for these lessons, even when just starting? (which brings me to a silly question; are all these payments easy to stop when wanted (for example: hosting for a month, stays hosting for a month? and buying a domain which you have to pay for yearly, can be stopped after a year?))
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7230457].message }}
    • Profile picture of the author sebtanic
Well I bought a domain & hosting for one year. I think that is the minimum amount of time.

If I remember correctly, when I signed up for the domain I had the option to either renew the contract automatically after a year, or to default to let it expire unless i renew explicitly.

yes a domain and paid hosting is required. The hosting if paid month to month is like $9.99 or something like that for the basic plan if I remember right. Hostgator is a good choice for this. You will need to register a domain name which is like $8.99 with my registrar. Some people will say you can get by with using free resources by creating a site on a service like blogger.com or weebly or other web 2.0s. But I don't like this idea because you lose the credibility of having a real domain name. Just my opinion though. I'm sure plenty of people will chime in to disagree with me.

Yes, the payments for the hosting are easy to stop. I'd suggest paying month to month until you are certain this type of work is the right fit for you. Once you do that you can take advantage of their discount when you pay up front for a whole year of service.

Domain names will just expire after the year is up provided you dont have it set to "autorenew" by your registrar. NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO- has caught me a few times with this feature when I was unaware of it. Thats one of the reasons why I dont use them (but Im starting to digress... and ramble).

Right, I wouldnt set it to auto renew, but thats just my preference. My registrar sends email start at 45 days before it is going to expire to remind me to re register it. If I leave it up to my memory to cancel (like everything else in my life) then I would forget.

yes, yes a bit it did.. lol

Moving on...... my very very first site was done about 2 and a half years ago. It was a forum about relationships. I had no clue what I was doing. This was before I found any forums to learn from, before I knew anything about keyword relativity, etc... just a stupid idea I had at the time. I promoted it on facebook and got a few people to register but it never took off. I can see now the error of my ways. But it goes to show that you actually do learn by taking action and learning from your mistakes.

That is why I'm not ashamed to tell people about my failures. Everyone has them, even the "gurus". But I doubt you will hear FK's or Jeff Paul's old war stories on here.

I can't seem to get it to come up on the archives. PM me and I'll share the url.(Remember I'm not ashamed...to share..over PM that is! ) My post count is too low to PM yet.

WOW, you really have hit a nerve with this post...
Ok here's my two penny's worth of advice. Ignore 99% of the advice you will be given!

Granted you ARE on the best forum for Internet Marketing, but still so many people on here are peddling the same stuff just reworded and repackaged.

The first thing I feel you should do is affiliate marketing, I know lots will argue against that (and of course many for it too, but here's why...
Affiliate marketing is by far the easiest way to start the ball rolling, much better than selling your own products off the block.

Try and find a product that you know something about, then find a supplier of that product and find the affiliate program that works with that supplier. Once you have done that, you can spend time NOT money marketing the product.

You will get stuck, you will wonder off for the greener grass for other products, but when you come back to the first product stick with it.

Finally don't affiliate with anything unless you get serious money per sale. a MINIMUM, I will say that again a MINIMUM of $50 per sale. If you do anything for less, you will find yourself fighting an uphill battle.

Finally whatever you do choose to do ONLY do it for 1/2 months, then step back and you will understand much more and be able to focus on important things such as recurring income, and list building. but for now, I would recommend the steps above, it really will open your eyes and cost you much less than jumping in at the deep end.

I am online most days and I am more than happy to help you. Not as a Mentor, not as a Coach, just as someone who has been there and fell down every hole along the way.

    Best regards

Just to offer up a counter argument to this, MOST of the higher paying commissions are promoted by a greater number of people, thus higher competition. If you're relying on search traffic (cheapest method) then its going to be hard to find enough traffic to convert these. Not always the case, but something to consider.

If you're going the affiliate route check out the Amazon Associates affiliate program. I've had decent success with it for the limited time & effort I've put into it.

I agree with you to a very large extent Ryan as regards "The higher paying commissions are promoted by a greater number of people" however this is NOT a bad thing...
There are easily 1 million different ways/sites etc. to use to promote a product online, so even if there are 100,000 competitions of which less than 10,000 will have the knowledge to promote a product properly; this leaves a massive market to promote and earn commissions.

The difference I feel anyway between promoting a product for less money is not actually all financial...

Let me try and give an example here of what I mean, when I started out I would spend hours trudging over the steps to promote something. Then after all was done for the day I would check my affiliate commissions for that day. If it was a "Low Commission - High Demand" I may have seen 5 or 6 x $5.00 payments for that day’s work. But of course I knew that the work I had just done would result in sales for days or even weeks after. So the best I could do is judge what I made that day then times that by the time I expected to earn from the work I did. Of course that's great but looking at 5 x $5.00 payments for a whole days work, hardly made it seem worthwhile.

On the other side of the coin, when I was promoting a "High Commission - Low Demand" product for the day as above, then I checked my affiliate commissions at the end of that day and seen just 1 or 2 sales @ $50.00 each. I was really over the moon and would have to fight myself to walk away from the computer and call it a day. I was so eager to open my computer the next day just to see if I had made sales.

Greed also plays a BIG and POSITIVE part in affiliate marketing (again in my opinion) I really became greedy after a few months in respect of the number of sales I made in a day. If I had only made 1 or 2 sales I would get very annoyed try to learn another method that could pull me in that extra sale or two every day (Warrior is great for this by the way). Of course the nature of “Greed” is there is never enough, so one or two extra sales soon became five or six and so on, until I was earning far more from my “online knowledge” than I could earn here in the real world.

Enough of my life story, sorry Ryan (and others who read this) but I just wanted to give a clear reason why I said to the self-proclaiming newbie to ONLY promote products with commissions over $50.00 per sale.

Good stuff being optimistic guys, but the reality is that you could potentially put in 2 years worth of work for no recompense. Often these projects take a while to gather momentum, particularly traffic building.

Try not to be too bedazzled by success stoies, learn the relevant crafts and keep on trucking. As long as you can accept you may not get immediate results, you'll be all good

I agree, and I guess it probably depends on the product you are promoting and what methods you are using.

My counter argument was just me playing devil's advocate.. and based on gaining some easy victories for the beginner so they don't get discouraged too soon.

Much like Dave Ramsey's debt snowball approach to pay off smallest debts first in order to recognize progress rather than the debts with the highest interest rates (which would actually cost the least in the long run).

But I totally get your angle and I think it is a 100% valid way to approach affiliate sales.

To add one very important thing: don't rely on old, obsolete SEO courses and articles. They will not teach you almost anything effective. SEO and internet marketing in general has changed tremendously even during the last year.

Make sure everything you learn is up-to-date and from the current year: 2012. Of if you go into 2013, then read materials from that year... 2011 already is a bit "out of fashion"...

Obsolete techniques can be very harmful.
Most newcomers do plenty of old techniques, because they are reading about them online. And they overdo them, believing that they should put more effort, energy into the techniques they are using. Google will simply penalize them and when they don't see the desired results, they do even more... It's like if they were "digging their own graves"...

    Hi Tom,

I think the best piece of advice I could give you is to go out and make your own mistakes. While there is an abundance of great tips and information out there; it is easy to become overwhelmed and lose focus on your own goals.

Do not rush out and waste money on software / tools, there is always a free alternative.

If you are going to make a success of this then it will require a hell of a lot of work and individuality. I can assure you it is very enjoyable and well worth the effort.

To quote a line from Ratatouille "not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere"

Good luck Tom and I hope you find what you are looking for!

Me again, sorry if I seem to be dominating this thread, but I have received so many messages asking me to help clarify certain IM terms and provide help, of course I am happy to do so for anyone breaking into the field of IM, but rather than repeat myself in every second message, I will put some info here too.
Most of the questions focus on two areas:

    1. 1. The niche
    2. 2. The products to promote

The answers below are the way I see things, they may not be exactly (or remotely) what others see and the answers but that’s the differences in opinions and the terminology should be irrelevant as long as the solution is suitable.

Within the messages people are mentioning micro-niche, mini-niche and so many other types of niches that they have seen someone mention on other posts. Here’s the way I see things.

Let’s take “Leisure” as a topic for the sakes of example only, some may call this a niche or some other term but to me it’s a TOPIC.

Within Leisure you have hundreds of smaller RELATED FIELDS that others may call mini niches. Let’s say for example Fishing, Tennis and swimming as related fields.

Now down another layer you have the subjects that are often called micro niches that are encompassed within the related fields, again for example you could have fishing rods, fishing reels and fishing hooks all being within the Fishing RELATED FIELD and all again within the TOPIC of Leisure.

If you wanted to you can even go down yet another two layers, for example a BRAND NAME within that subject, such as Shakespeare fishing rods and Shakespeare fishing reels.

The final level that is common would be a specific MAKE or a brand, to me this is in MOST cases too excessive in depth (in the case of the example fishing) but for other brands it’s essential; the name Apple 32 gig IPod for example would be one that you WOULD target but some a model like Shakespeare XYZ fishing rod is something you would not.

Ok I think I have explained what I see as the various levels or niches as some may say, now where should you start????

The answer is virtually impossible to answer in general, because I have no idea what your personal knowledge is and what your current abilities are. If for example you have been working for a manufacturer of Fork lift trucks and you know all about 3 of their models, I would suggest that you jump straight on that and make some kind of comparison between the models and talk in the terms that fork lift buyers use such as maximum reach and how that would benefit them over and maximum lifting weight. In short if you are this person YOU know what buyers want to read and what makes them buy a truck better than me.

Of course in the case of fork lift trucks it would be easy to offer a commercial seller some kind of deal where you refer them customers in return for upwards of $50 commissions. Or you can see if they already have some kind of affiliate referral program in place.

Again taking a step back, if you have been working making fishing hooks, that sell for penny’s then you would NOT want to waste your time promoting them because you would have to make a ridiculous amount of sales just to make it worthwhile. So I say this again as I have many times “High Profit – Low sales” is better for you than “Low Profit- High Sales”.

Once you have found your product to promote, than and only then should you even think about ways to promote the product. There are so many different ways to promote different products, some need extravagant websites others a simple sales page. Some need no website at all. In my opinion again, you should look for the cheapest option here, as you may discover a little later you did not understand the product as well as you imagined you did not know the market. Once you do make a few sales then following the methods you learnt on Warrior then you can work out your next steps and budget for them.

I personally have over 300 websites, no two are the same and my approaches to the markets are also equally different on each site. One thing I will say is essential is don’t talk about YOU on the home page. I am sorry if this upsets you, only a handful of people actually care, the vast majority care about the product and what you can do for them, not who you are and why this and why that.

Anyway enough rattling on, 800 words for a single post is more than enough for even the most dedicated warrior to have to read.

    Best regards all

Just a little something I wrote up and thought I'd share with you guys. I usually turn this kind of stuff into ebooks but I decided to be nice and crack it out with a few paragraphs.

Clickbank products aren't the easiest things in the world to convert so I'm going to help you guys out by letting you know how I promote those products. You will see your hops increase dramatically and hopefully you'll get some conversions out of it.

The first thing you need to do is sign into Clickbank and go to the marketplace to find products that you want to promote. Facebook is becoming more and more popular by the minute so I would start with those. If they don't convert well for you, try my tactics on other products that you think will sell better.

People who use Facebook usually play the games or use an app that requires you to play certain games in order to "unlock" something in the app. So start by browsing the Clickbank marketplace for Facebook game products. If all else fails, just search for the two most popular games on Facebook - Mafia Wars and Farmville. For me, Mafia Wars converts better. The product that converts the best for me would be Mafia Wars Annihilation. Go to the marketplace and search for it. Now that you have your product chosen, get the promotion link/your affiliate link. Copy and paste it into Notepad for easy access.

For the next part, you are going to need a Twitter account that has at least 50 followers. You yourself are not going to be using Twitter to promote the product(s) so 50 followers is sufficient. If you don't have a Twitter account with at least 50 followers just go to NamePros.com and under NP$ Incentives start a thread asking for followers. It's a quick, easy and free way to get some followers. Once you have your Twitter account ready, go to retweet.it. This site allows you to get free retweets, all you have to do is tweet the messages on the homepage to get credits. They also give you the option to buy credits but it really isn't necessary. That's a lot of retweets for just one of two products and you don't want to put all of your eggs into one basket. If you're promoting a bunch of products it would be a good option. So once you get at least 20 credits or so, go to Notepad, where you copied your Clickbank affiliate link, and copy and paste it into retweet.it under Submit A Message. After that, retweet.it does the rest and you'll get a bunch of retweets for free. That's one way I get my conversions.

Another method of mine is Facebook. I have a fan page with 20k fans and it grows everyday, this is the first place that I start. I take my Clickbank affiliate link and update the fan page with a new status containing my link. Another way I use Facebook to promote Clickbank products, especially the Mafia Wars products, is I go to Groups and search for Mafia Wars groups. I look for all the popular groups, groups with at least 20k members. I post my Clickbank affiliate link to the walls. Make sure you don't overdo it though. Do around 5 every few hours. Facebook is getting pretty strict these days and if they see that you're constantly abusing the wall feature they will block you for hours, sometimes days, from posting on any walls.

That's basically it. I'll be honest and say I'm not one of those people making hundreds a day and thousands a month but I still make money from just using the above methods. I hope it works for you guys as well. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks! I don't see Mafia Wars Annihilation, though.

Create multiple sites and build separate types of strategies for each.

Either one, two or more... or all of them will rank well enough to bring you profit!

Otherwise keep in mind that there's not just the search engines that can bring you traffic.
