What is recommended for making video screencasts / software tutorials?

I like Camtasia Pro but at 300 bux its out

BSR ?

screencast-o-matic?

I'm willing to buy/pay...just not 300 bux.

    I'm sorry but my vote is still for Camtasia. You gotta speculate to accumulate. You can use the free version Brandon recommended above but very quickly you will want the real deal.

      I use CamStudio. Nothing fancy but it is free and I find it does the trick for simple screen capture video tutorials.

    My vote is still for Camtasia.

    You can also purchase gigs on Fiverr.com to have people complete your screen casts, and software tutorials that already have the software for just $5.

      Camtasia sits at #1, but there are a sizeable number of alternatives that will work well for video tutorials if you're not looking to spend the dollars right away.

      For $15/yr Screencast-O-Matic is pretty good and getting better all the time. Free version available.

      Or, for something different, right now, Debut Video Capture Software is on sale for the month of October at $29. Free version available for non-commercial use.

    Screencast-O-Matic is still my favorite:

    - No account needed but you do need an email address.
    - When you are finished the video, you can export it to a variety of sources
    - The free version gives you 15 minutes to record.
    - Must have internet access to record the video as it is online.
    - The free version prints a small watermark at the bottom of the video but it doesn't detract from your video.

      The big drawback with Jing is that it's restricted to 5-min captures, with a limited amount of features. It's essentially been replaced by their Snagit program which now includes video capture that's unlimited.
