I bought over $20,000 worth of sites and domains, now what?

I've been wanting to get into running websites for the past 5 years or so and recently took the plunge. I would have to say that I got the bug and went on a buying binge of websites and domains that I thought had potential to do well.

In total I bought 9 sites and 30 domains.

Now I think I've got way more than I can handle and really only want to manage 2-3 sites so I can focus on them without spreading myself out too much. I've already figured out which ones I want to keep.

What can I do with the others?

Try selling them on sites like Flippa or where did you buy them from you could try selling them there as well. You could just hold onto them and get the sites you want up and running and then move onto your other sites.

    Just my two cents

So you spent $20,000 without backed up by any plan??

Dude, you need to hire a financial advisor or get married lol...

Anyway, you can sell them on flippa or here. What else you can do?

Actually I have a great plan and have gotten some good coaching. It just happened really fast because every time I bought a site or domain and learned more I either found a better site or domain and just kept coming up with more and more ideas. A couple of friends who have been doing well online got me turned on to it and well... I don't do anything half-way.

You wouldn't believe me if I said I was married to a financial adviser.

I don't think I made any bad moves. I just think I need to focus on a couple sites instead of trying to build an empire so fast.

I'm not familiar with Flippa or selling sites on here so I've been looking for someone who is familiar with the process to outsource the domain sales for now and use what I get from those to promote the sites.

Wow, spending 20k on domains/sites without a clear gameplan... I bet its going to take a while recouping your investment.
    Good Luck.

The few sites I'm keeping are already doing well and were profitable before I bought them. One earned $6,500 last month with only $1,200 in promotion so it won't be long before my investment is returned.

You made $6,500 with $1,200 investment with one of your websites in one month and you are asking us what to do next? I think you already know a lot more than the 99% who will reply here.

Anyway, if I were you, I would focus on one single site at a time and bring it to its maximum possible potential. Then I would move on to the next site and so on. I would keep only the sites that has potential and that I personally like to work on even if all the work was done by outsourcing.

Right. That's what I am doing.

How or where do I find people that I can outsource reselling the domains?

I'm able to sell the domains for you,
I don't do it for a living but I've sold several thousand dollars worth of domains in the last year or so
Do you want me to chuck you a PM?

Sure, but I can't PM yet (not enough posts) so you can just send your email and I'll respond or email me at hedgefunder[at]execs[dcom] . If you have any examples of what you've sold I'm sure we can work out some kind of profit share.

Yes, most of the sites I bought were already profitable. The domains I bought were for sites I want to get developed. I think I'll hold off on the new developments and focus on what is already working for now.

Reselling the domains I cant help you with but I can help you outsource the entire management side of your sites so that all you are left to do is collect the cheque's at the end of the month.

I would be happy to provide a complete proposal of the exact service we would provide and you'll get to see the whole project unfold before you via our client dashboard.

Sounds good if you have experience with managing sites.

Do you develop sites too? There are a couple domains I definitely want to keep and get sites built on.

I can't PM yet but you can send me a message at hedgefunder[at]execs[dcom] and I can show you what I have to work with.

Sorry, I don't provide web development services mostly because we are looking to work in closely with other web developers that dont have the infrastructure to provide the additional web related service we have access to. The conflict of interest would kill us a business.

I'm mid flight cooking an awesome dinner right now but will open an email dialog now all the same, lets see if we can take the pressure off ya and improve that bottom line.

Sounds like a shiny object syndrome. We have all been there.

You may have had a plan, but it was not complete, because it should take into account the number of sites you can service with the time you have available.

Now the lesson is learned, to dig yourself out of the hole, you could try to flip some of your sites. This is the easiest way I think to get back the money, and you may make some profit if you are lucky. Do it soon before the sites lose value.

Well, my plan was to outsource most of the work but finding reliable help has been the only issue. The people capable of managing decent sites all seem to have their own and doing it on their own.

One of my good friends got me turned on to this and started coaching me and I really value his advice. He earns about $60k/month with adult sites. I decided to go for the mainstream approach... having a wife and all.

    You've done very well already!

Wow, making $6,500 from a $21,500 investment in one month is an extraordinary feat! Let's do the sums...

    6,500/21,500 = .302 x 100 = 30.2% return in one month x 12 = 362% PA (annualised presuming similar returns). That's as awesome as it gets my friend.

If you proceed at just this rate and make $6,500 every time you spend just $1,200 in promotion you are as successful a business owner as there ever was.

Congratulations! All you have to work out is how much money you want to make per month and invest a suitable amount in promotion then kick back and focus on your hobbies and your passions and you're set. Add a safe percentage for failures and take growth as it comes and you are on a very happy road. One of the best most inspiring success stories I've read in years of membership on this forum.

Outstanding! I'd be interesting in interviewing you as a case study if you're up for it. I have an audience waiting to hear how you did it.

Thanks. I've learned how to manage my investments from a decade in stocks and know a good deal when I see one. Merging the knowledge from these two industries is key.

I always have "The Snowball" (by Warren Buffett) in the back of my mind whenever I make any financial decisions. I also try not to buy anything that I can't resell later for at least what I paid.

I would focus on building a complete backend business using 1 site, and just milk that site until it cant be milked anymore (and that's IF it doesnt get milked anymore). Get rid of all the other sites and focus on your most profitable one right now.

I wouldn't. I'd keep everything. If it's making a profit - great. If it's not - no harm. Do work on whichever site you feel needs it at the time and try to build them all up to their full potential. If you find it's too much work that's great! Get help. You just never know which site will start failing or which site will start firing. Exciting times!

Build some simple sites on those domains you don't want to keep, add some contents, improve the ranking, and then sell them. You should be able to sell for a lot more with some simple work.

The best way to make an income from your sites that you have purchased is to either improve them a little or leave themas they are then go to a service called Flippa and sell them for a profit.

As for the domains if you have the skill and knowledge then develop site based around the domain name and sell them on Flippa or simply put the domains up for auction.

From the nick, I assumed you are a hedge fund investors and this is probably a side project.

I have seen the trend over the last couple of years and don't be surprise many of us here (bankers, financial advisors, investors, etc) are divesting our funds into these "alternative" investments to provide some sort of passive income away from traditional stock, options or mutual funds.

Investing in domains and websites are actually fun and addictive if you know what you are doing. Having your assets hitting 30% ROI in a month is already a WIN!

Two options: 1. Hire a good team to help you. Sounds like you tried this and couldn't find anyone. Try again perhaps? The most important team member is your writer. All of these sites need fresh content. If you are feeding them with content and they are already making some kind of money (maybe not as much as they could) then you can at least afford to let them hang out while you bring each one up to it's full potential.

    2. Quickly see if there is anything you can do to increase the profit for the existing traffic. A lot of times it's just the copy that needs tweaking or in some case a complete rewrite. You could also quickly create products, set up a more effective autoresponder sequence for the email lists (if there is one), find affiliate products to promote, etc. After a few months of good income flip them on Flippa. Flipping a site on Flippa right after you just bought it is a good way to not get your money back in most cases (in less you got a really good price on it). Consider a Flippa broker if you go this route as they will probably be able to get you more money if you aren't experienced on that site.
