What Are The Biggest Non English Speaking Markets?

I'm not asking who the biggest internet users are outside the English speaking world but who is embracing the whole shopping online experience? I see internet use is big in Europe and Japan. Also China has a lot of people so it is well represented in regard to internet usage. I'm not sure about the Spanish speaking market but I'm hoping someone does.

Anyone marketing to markets who speak language/s other then English or otherwise know about the marketing potential in these areas?

My take on this is that there aren't any non-English speaking markets that actually spend money...not like the US.

I am not saying that you can't make money in non-English speaking markets. I am sure you can. I am simply saying that it is a waste of time IMO.

If I had to choose one, I would say China...China is the only non-English speaking country with a internet user base and actual money to spend.

Everywhere else you just find freebie seekers...for the most part.

      Everywhere outside the US?

Not sure whether or not you meant that, but I am with you to some extent, in that the US is clearly the biggest market for online shopping.

That said, for products/services such as 'hosting' for example, you have customers all over the globe.

The Spanish-speaking market is absolutely huge, because it covers not only Spain, but the whole of South America (apart from Brazil), and many other countries, too.

I agree the Spanish market is huge I have a few frioends who have spanish weight loss sites and they do pretty well. China is a huge market but very difficult to promote to as access to a vast swathe of social media is blocked, which only really leaves paid options.

mentioned china... if i remember correctly mandarin chinese is the most
common language with almost 1 billion speakers, so you can expect the
    chinese market to be big.

        Hi Shane, of course..

        1) Spanish.. Like what Alexa said.. There are a lot of people who speak Spanish in south america.

        2) German.. Germany, Austria (and other parts of Europe speak Germans), HUGE market!

        3) Chinese.. Like what most warriors suggested, it's super easy to rank in chinese's search engine (sogou.com, baitu.com etc).. It's literally a goldmine

        4) French.. Another big market, Some part of Canada, Madagascar, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Belgium speak French.

        5) Tamil.. No doubt, Indian is so big.

        6) Russian.. Likewise

        7) Malay.. You'll mainly be targeting malaysia, singapore, indonasia and muslims all around the world, big market imo.

Not so much, I think, in one sense. Because (as is true of India, to a lesser extent), although internet penetration is far higher now in Russia than ever before, I think a high proportion of regular internet users in Russia, and all the "younger generation" ones, actually speak and read pretty good English.

I know the proportion of people in India who speak English and use the internet and have credit-cards/PayPal is pretty small, but it's still a big number of people, out of a population of over 1.2 Billion.

India and China are among the most difficult markets to break into, specially using an online model. In India, retail (in-store) purchases still dominate while in China, a lot of the online activity is way too controlled and filtered.

One of my main non-US, non-English speaking markets is the Middle East (yes, that's right -- Middle East).

I mostly promote educational certification programs to UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain. Good buyers there.

That is exactly what I have been doing with Pakistani immigrants who migrated to the southern US...they agree with me when I say that unless a market is mature AND has money to spend AND has the ABILITY to spend it ONLINE...then you can "hang it up".

India, for example, is a HUGE demographic with an absolutely DEPLORABLE conversion rate...and my Pakistani friends having lived in that exact area...agree with me.

Just look at ho many Clickbank products focus on the Indian market...hardly any.

Alexa is right about the Spanish market though...it is monetizable...not like English speaking US/UK/Australia however.

You should just take a look at the economic situation in the world and which countries are growing in financial and economical sense.
Those are China, India, Brazil, Russia...
Some financial experts are saying that China and India will be worlds leaders in economy in next 15 years. Those are the markets to look for, and India will have more inhabitants than China till 2030.
Brazil is growing rapidly and Russia also. So, those are markets with non english speakers that you should focus on.

      Thanks Paul, great information here.

The BRIC nations you listed are all growing fast but are starting from a much lower base with GDP per capita just a fraction of what it is in developed nations.

For example, compare those emerging markets with developed markets: List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This means consumers in those countries will generally have less disposable income to spend compared to developed countries. Although it is worth noting those who have internet access in developing countries tend to have higher than average incomes.

I would also consider other things like:

Internet penetration: See List of countries by number of Internet users - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For example, notice how Japan & Russia have similar population sizes yet Japan has 100m internet users (80% penetration) while Russia has 60m (44% penetration)

Currency exchange rates: Products and services from US/UK/AUS based businesses may be simply too expensive for consumers in some markets due to unfavourable exchange rates or differences in living standards.

Comparing Costs Of Living Between Two Countries may help with this.

Willingness to make online purchases is also important because even a market with a large number of internet users like India may not prove fruitful because few of those internet users make purchases online.

This article contains a useful graph of online shoppers by population % for each country. Britons are biggest online shoppers in developed world - Telegraph

Where it all gets more complicated is measuring the size and differences within markets based on language spoken such as English, Spanish, or French speaking nations. It's likely different products and prices would appeal to different Spanish speaking nations for example.

I hope everyone understands the fact that just because a demographic is "huge" doesn't necessarily mean that it is a "market" per se.

My question is: "If a demographic doesn't "by and large" have the means be they monetary or in terms of ability to "buy" online, can they really be considered a "market"?"

That is a painful question to only have an answer to AFTER the fact. Choose very carefully.

How these markets are for those of us selling digital products online maybe different then say a fast food chain franchise, still I'm keen to explore it further.

In Germany it didn't work for me, not with digital products. And for physical products: shipping costs are very high if you order from the US (and there are customs fees etc.). I now do affiliate marketing in German and it is a lot easier than in the English market, because there is still little competicion.

Before deciding you need to look at a few things:

Is the delivery infrastructure in the country reliable and robust to enough for people to have confidence that the product will be delivered. How good is security?

Is there trust in the online payment processing system - Is paypal operating? what percent of consumers have confidence in buying online.

What is the percentage of broadband internet connectivity - what percentage of the population have access?

What is the GDP per capita.

Using this criteria I would say the best languages are:

    German
    French
    Italian
    Dutch
    Spanish

I would say the german language speaking market....
This includes Switzerland, Austria and Germany and some smaller once line Lichtenstein...

However, it may be easier to team up with a local person to target the market because of distance and time difference.. I am always open for a new business :-) and I honestly do believe that some of the business that are working in the US can just be copied in the german language area with some little changes...

Well, I am from Mexico but live in Spain... and in my opinion, the spanis market has always been a few years behind compared to the US. The most mature market is Spain, followed by Mexico...

To put it in perspective, think about what the US market was like 5 - 7 years ago... and you have the picture of the Spain and Mexico markets.

Convertion rate is low, but then again, getting traffic is cheap. However, Spain is suffering an economic crisis that is unbelievable, and people are not spending.. at least the middle and lower class which ammounts to about 75% of the population...

My recommendation is to shoot for the high class market.. luxury and premium products... those DO sell.

In Mexico, convertion is also really low for paid products... but the key is to target the top middle and high class markets... they also DO buy and spend money online.

Make very good use of demographic targetting, i.e in facebook, segement really well your public to get the high class. Always target "With university degree" and above 30 year old public.

These are my two cents.. hope this helps you.

You can always PM me if you want to talk about the market or opportunities here.

Russian market is huge, and people buy online, but we have own trusted web here. Don't expect Amazon commissions from Russian market :-)

People just use other sites for purchases.

Plus a lot of Russians prefer to call a few times to check the availability, ask some questions, before ordering online.

Mobile market is huge too, but already exploited by shitty SMS marketers.
Everyone has a cell phone, if you don't have it in Russia, people look at you like you're disabled person. And it's dirt cheap. I pay about $20 a month for unlimited calls, SMS, internet traffic (and it works in any city, not only in my home city).

A typical online buyer here is very cynical, intelligent and ready to spend a lot.

I think that French Speaking Countries (the "Francophonie") is one of the biggest non-english Market in the World.

Indeed, the "Organisation internationale de la Francophonie" represents now 77 countries / 970,000,000 inhabitants, including developed countries such as France, Swiss, Belgium, Canada: Organisation internationale de la Francophonie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You may also check those information at Organisation internationale de la Francophonie

And French language is the second official language used by the United Nations in their most important documents / resolutions, just after English.
