Hi guys,

I wonder can we include the word "Wordpress" in our domains? I have seen several websites doing this, but I am afraid of copyright infrigement.

Is it okay?

    WordPress doesn't allow that actually.

Here's the article on their site about this:

But why I found so many domains with the word "Wordpress" available online? Why don't Wordpress team sue them for copyright?

Normally big companies dont mind this things as long as this will not effect them. But if those grew up and compete with wordpress, then wordpress will sue them for sure!

Well, I'd say if someone else is doing it, it doesn't mean it is legal.

They address this on that same page:
Other domains are using WordPress in them!

If they’re not WordPress.com, WordPress.net, WordPress.org, WordPress.tv, or WordPressFoundation.org, they’re not allowed, and you should contact the owner with a pointer to this page. We see this most frequently with spammy sites distributing plugins and themes with malware in them, which you probably don’t want to be associated with.

I suggest that you should use "WP" instead "WordPress" directly.
WordPress does not allow to use WordPress copyright.
    Avoid this should be fine.

You do know that WordPress is allready a brand?

They provide an open source blog solution.

Since it is a brand name and not a general word you can not use it in your domain.

Don't do it. Targeted traffic and sales make the site successful... not a domain name with the word "Wordpress" in it.

it's not copyright, if it's trademark infringement...

So, if they have the name Wordpress trademarked, you can't. If they don't, you are free to use the word.

well, just read the above mentioned article, and the name is trademarked, so they can get you for it...

should have read it before posting...

There are so many sites that use wordpress in their domain and it would be very hard for owner to pursue all of them, but since you're now aware it's infringment better look to bypass it.

Be a little creative. You don't need WP or WordPress in a domain name to convey your message.

True that ... As you mentioned, you saw a lot of people using that ... you should not do that then so you would not be included to the mainstream and in the banch of people that are doing the same thing... *motivation*

I believe you can not use WordPress on your domain as its already owned by WP, doing so would seem like you are using the latter's popularity to get your site ranked or your product to become popular. Make your website or product popular and well-loved on its own merits, and you will be surprised that the domain would never matter later on.

Do not add WordPress on your domain just so your website or products will become popular, wouldn't it be great if your website or product becomes popular based on its own merits and not because of someone else? Just my two cents..

Well, you can include the Wordpress in your domain name, but only if you are going to use that domain for 1-2 years. If you plan developing that website for 5+ years, you should not include the Wordpress word in the domain, because it is a trademark.

It isn't copyright infringement. It's trademark infringement and I'm sure you already know that Wordpress owns the Wordpress trademark, so of course, you should not use it.

As for seeing sites like that, their days are probably numbered.
