Starting over, need a few tips on creating a list

Hi guys, I haven't been on here for a long time. I dipped my toe into AM a year or 2 back but chose niches that didn't interest me and it never went very far!

In the meantime DH and I have set up a couple of web shops with good success. However I can't get away from the freedom that AM carries (no stock, no ties to the office, processing orders, hours etc...)

So we are going to give it another bash! We have come up with a niche that interests us and have started to gather a Twitter following which seems to be getting a good response with good interaction.

I am thinking the next step would be to set up a website/page/blog to offer a free info product/newsletter and capture email address to make a list. I am just looking for some reassurance really being nearly new to this!

What mechanism and product works to capture the most opt-ins in your experience? Do you think our Twitter followers will run a mile when they see we want their email addresses?

It's all about the value proposition. Create a great looking page, get great graphics, get a great free giveaway. Offer them something they really want for free.

In their minds, your visitors weigh up the value proposition i.e. I get all of this good stuff just for giving my email address. If I really want it, I am going to give you my email address.

Here's a stonkingly good tip for you, especially if your list is going to be in the IM niche. If you use Aweber, tell people right underneath your sign-up form (where people usually say 'we hate spam') <-- you can still say that

It will increase your sign-ups because people in that niche trust Aweber and know they can easily unsubscribe if you send them junk. This may be true of other autoresponders too. But it is an extra incentive to part with their email address if you are using Aweber.

Thanks Will, I will start searching for something they will want then! What has more perceived value, an e-book with tips or a regular newsletter with tips for example (I guess newsletter could include sales pitches also)?

The niche is not IM but can you fill me in on auto responders, Aweber etc... in newbie terms please? In our current web shops we collect email addresses from newsletter sign ups just by having them come to our mail account and we actually copy and paste into a list (I guess this is an ancient method haha!)

Also how is it best to advertise this freebie on our site/page. Is it best to have a page dedicated to it or to build a good content rich useful site and advertise in a prominent position/use pop ups etc...?

A lesson best learnt right up front is that quantity does NOT equal value. Don't think you need to giveaway a huge report or a bunch of long videos -- you don't need to. Some of the best freebies I have received over the years have been from 1-2 page PDF files or short 1-2 minute videos. Just give them your best secret and make it easy for them to consume it. The larger your giveway, the longer it will be before they are done with that and ready to look at your paid stuff. So just focus on quality NOT quantity. That's a lesson I learnt the hard way. Give them your number one best secret that will help them move one step closer to their desired outcome. Once they see you are able to progress them towards their desired goal they will be more interested in looking at what else you have to offer (ie: your paid stuff or affiliate products you recommend).

You would offer a freebie and have an optin form that collects email addresses from people who want to access that freebie. So you use an autoresponder service such as Aweber (that's what I use) and they give you code to insert on your squeeze page that creates the optin form. People then optin on that form and their email address is automatically added to your list and they then get access to the freebie. You can then set up a bunch of emails that go out to those people automatically over the course of the next x amount of days, weeks, or even years. It's totally up to you.

Your freebie should always be given away on a squeeze page. That is a single page that's only objective is to squeeze the email address out of the prospect. Keep it simple and to the point. You can definitely build a blog and content rich site to drive traffic and then advertise your squeeze page on that site.

Fantastic, thanks WillR, and would you advise I ask them to opt into my mailing list at the point of downloading the freebie (e.g To receive X free just subscribe to our mailing list)?

Definitely, that's the whole point of your freebie. You offer the freebie in return for the persons email address.

Go to google images and search 'squeeze page'. You'll see a huge amount of examples of how a typical squeeze page should look and work.

There are some marketers who will actually give away the freebie without asking for an email and then at the end of the freebie once the person has read what you have to offer, you direct them to a squeeze page to optin for more information.

It's up to you as to which way you do it but the first way is tried and tested and what most marketers use nowadays.

    1. Pick your target market. It needs to be a market where people have problems that cause them pain. I don't necessarily mean physical pain but a market where there are pressing problems that can be solved. Usually if a market has a number of big forums supporting it then that's a pretty good sign.

    2. Find the biggest forums in your market and look for those threads that have had the most views and posts/replies. These are the HOT topics that really interest your market. Develop a free giveaway based on one of those hot topics.

    3. Collect email addresses in return for the giveaway.

    4. Develop a relationship with that list and refer other products.

    5. Rinse and repeat.

    You nailed it Will.

Developing a relationship with your list still works in today's fast action paced world.

Get this right and you will make a killing off your list.

develop a personal relationship with your list and earn trust. I'd rather have a list of 100 that trust me rather than 10k that just see me pitching ads.
