Who ever said the Alexa toolbar was useless?

Hi everyone, I hope you're having a great day.
I have a number of domains and a few premium domains in particular that I have recently been looking to sell if I receive the offers that I am comfortable with. Okay nothing unusual so far lol.

However, recently I listed a premium domain on Sedo to see the exposure I may get for it. I have never really used them before, I like to use Afternic and depending on the domain occasionally other platforms. I received an email this morning from someone saying he was interested in buying the domain and what was my price?

I replied with a price I have in mind that I think is fair. He responded that he would offer me a bit below that figure but with one condition. He insisted on receiving a domain evaluation for an independant opinion on what they thought the domain was worth. He also said he wanted a valuation that included a trademark verification.

Here's the reply he sent:

Joel,

I offer x usd.
Even if you did not sell domains before I hope you know the procedure.
In order to process with the deal I need two things:

1. I need a valuation certificate.

It should be from experts I know and trust. Without a professional valuation we both cannot be sure in the final sale price. It will minimize our risks. If you don't know what the valuation (appraisal) means please read this blog Investing in domains

2. It's important for us to know that you domain has no problems with trademarks. Some evaluators include this option in the appraisalsal service. I need the evaluation service with the TM verification.

Please take into account, I'm not a novice and don't accept free or automated valuations. I asked in the forum about reliable and independent valuation services with the trademark verification option. Please read this information:
Investing in domains

If the valuation comes higher you can change your asking price. After you send me the professional valuation with the trademark verification via email (usually it takes one day to obtain it) we'll continue.

How do you want to be paid: PayPal, wire or CC?

Now I asked for a valaution for companies that i've dealt with before and he said no he wanted one in particular that dealt with trademark verification and that company x did an all in one. By the way this domain is generic so there's no way there's trademark issues over it lol.

I then asked him that would he pay at least 50% of the deposit for the valuation which I think is fair. He refused and said he never pays before he receives the valuation. This struck even bigger warning bells in my mind as why would someone who's offering big money for a domain not be prepared to pay around 25 euro's for an appraisal.

I then decided to check out the domain appraisal's site on Alexa and I found this review:

Comments:Domain sellers on Sedo have recently been targeted in the following way: 1. The seller places a domain for sale on Sedo. 2. The scammer scans Sedo for new domain listings. 3. The seller receives an email from the scammer. 4. This first email is the "hook". It offers a large sum of money for the domain and waits for the domain owner to take the bait. 5. Once the domain owner shows an interest, the scammer explains that he is very interested in the domain but cannot pay any money for it without a third party valuation service. 6. If the buyer bites (what's a small sum to pay for the riches offered by the scammer?), then they will pay for the valuation service and submit the result to the scammer. 7. At this point the scammer no longer responds to emails. They got what they wanted - the valuation fee.

I then copied and pasted this to the person who emailed me and guess what there has been no reply. So there are a couple of lessons here for those looking to sell domains.
1. There are some scammers around so be careful don't fall for BS.
2. If you receive a similar email you know what to do now i.e. ignore it.
3. I just found a new use for the Alexa toolbar as it isn't much use for anything else IMO .

WOW good job on that, it is well said. To be honest, I have never sold a domain, but I notice more and more that people really do it pretty often. You have convinced me even more to look more into this. thanks

Come on. You are telling me there are scammers on the Internets?

It's no longer just buyer beware -- seller beware also!

Of course there are Will, i'm just trying to avert other people from possibly falling into this trap. The domain is a good one so the amount of money he suggested was perfectly fair to be honest although slightly below my valuation. It was only when I took a step back and thought his reply was dodgy that I looked further into this.

I don't sit around all day in my business and expect scammers to pop out at me lol. However, it's always necessary to carry out due diligence in any potential business deal of course and this is no different.

      Just saying

No sweat Will, indeed a number of people have fallen for this scam artist if you look at the link above. I don't want others to fall into this unfortunate trap.

Typical deflection of a scammer - wants you to think of "getting money" rather than "what's going on here".

You had the experience not to fall for it - many are blinded by the $$$.

You are right Kay, now I come to think of it that was another thing that sent warning bells to me that something's not right here.
