WTF did Google do now?

Not complaining a bit. It's just that my site is suddenly getting mega-traffic. Traffic was always pretty decent for my "niche" but this is crazy. So I'm figuring google did something. Whatever they did - I like it.

Where is the traffic coming from? Are you sure it's search traffic and that it's coming from Google?

Well, it makes a change from people whining about them.

Can you see whether the influx is actually coming from Google?

In the last week some of my sites that had previously been ruined in terms of visitors, are now getting good traffic. I do not know what to make of it.
If I knew how to do it I could post some very weird stats from AWstats

Exactly! This is the first good thread about Google I've read in a long time.

I noticed a massive dip in a site i used to work on. It is a PR9. It took a hit with the Penguin update. Now, it is off the map for one of the most important search phrases. I don't get what is going on with Google.

I believe this is traffic from Google Images. All the sites I work with have had an increase in image traffic, and this increase has been quite important (approx. 20% increase) for us to know some new algorithm has rolled in these last days.

Come on people - I'm no techie, I'm a writer and gem hunter. I have no freaking clue where the traffic is coming from. It just tripled in the last 3 days and I have done NOTHING but keep an eye on my forums. I'm not even actively writing on my blog right now.

People are posting mega amounts of pics in the forum, so that is really a good possibility. Rock and gem hunting season is just winding to a close right now in the North so people are out as much as possible and posting pics of everything.

You can try google analytics for you to see the performance of your site. You can track your site's traffic sources including the number of:

        Visits:
        Unique Visitors:
        Pageviews:
        Pages / Visit:
        Avg. Visit Duration:
        Bounce Rate:
        % New Visits:

There are lots of tutorials you can find on youtube about it.

Anyway, congratulations and keep the good feelings flowing.

        Cheers,

How do you know it has tripled if you don't know where the traffic is coming from? Your numbers just give you unique visitors and page views?? There's no referrer section that actually says "Google Organic" referred that traffic??
If I saw a huge spike I would at least like to know who sent it and that's not hard to find out... most analytics have referrer section don't they?

Sal, I also heavily recommend Google Analytics. You are blind without it!

And if you are not a techie, hire someone to set it up and get it to email you a report every week or month. Probably a job for Fiverr :-)

However you must be a little bit techie - because you somehow know your traffic has increased. How did you find out?

If you prefer not to give Google the WHOLE story of your website visits, there's also Piwik you can install on your server. It has a good 5 minute install script, so you don't need to be a big techie, will give you access to MORE of your own Data than Google will, and is free. You can find it at piwik(dot)org.

But either way, you need to know where that traffic is being referred from. What if it's someone's pinned something of yours on Pinterest and it's gone viral?

From site vendors? Dunno. Didn't bother to check yet. Like I said, I'm most interested in effects on the off-line end than the site vendors. My vendors are 3rd party - I don't have a warehouse. A healthy readership is what is important. People that land on my site usually stay for awhile - and google already knew that one. I have terrestrial concerns that a healthy readership can be a boon for, so it's a good thing. I actually at times have done some SEO, LOL - but the spike came when I haven't really been maintaining anything - just yacking in my forums with the members. I just assumed that it had effected others, too, and thought someone might know if google was playing some new chess maneuver or what.

If it helps, for the last three weeks traffic, yes Google traffic, has doubled the average amount of Google traffic on one of my sites as well and I'm quite confidant that it isn't due to any pics as I really don't have any there, haha!

Um...yeah. I think that a voice-over site might not be as big in the imagry as a group of die hard rockhounds would. If this spike in mine came on that long ago, though I didn't catch it. I've only noticed the last 3 days. My quality is high and visitors sit on the site. My average visitor is there half an hour or more, so I'm not worried about being slammed. I still need to keep up on trends though so when I do any SEO I know what I'm looking at, eh?

            Certainly can't hurt.

Whew -- Okay.............I have a tech do my site. It's MY niche if I have sales or not -- I do much off-line with this because I AM a gem hunter. So it's not about business as you IMers think about "business".

I keep track of other stuff, like the stuff in my sig file and I'll be tracking my Kindle products. I'm not gonna bother my tech with site stats on my main niche - because, frankly, I don't really care. As I said, the site has had healthy traffic from day one...............It just increased so far and so fast that I wondered what google might be up to. I think I might have gotten my answer in here, though. I didn't think about the pictures.

      Ha ha. Good point!

It's funny how we all assume it's all about Google. And it very well could be, or could be something else.

I can see how others would like to know because if it is something else it gives hope to those who are stuck in the thought that it's Google or nothing.

I thought I explained that. It's not a new site and I haven't done anything with it lately, as I said - so I assumed it HAD to be google. I have several search engines parked on it almost continually. Had I done something, I'd assume it was what I did. When I actually write something for it the traffic always increases. So - waiting for my tech to tell me what's up.

Search results -- I'm still hitting page one and two, depending on the keywords. There are mega keywords, both short and long-tail that rank. I've had some strange stuff hit first page before, and it usually stays there a long time. I've got killer content. That much I'm actually an expert at. LOL. (good thing, too, because I can't do much else but write). My keywords fluctuate between 1st and 2nd page all the time depending on if I'm updating my blog or not.

I wouldn't be so excited. Your traffic may be coming from thousands of affiliates in China spamming the web. I had a site go from 100 hit per day to 5,000+. My server stats indicated they were coming from the same URL. Google closed my AdWords account because of this. Here is a link to one of these sites - Home - Acesse Ads
