Hello! I'm going to create my first website today and I need some help. My website domain will consist of one word that gets 10k local monthly searches, with low competition. The site will not be in english but in my country's language. So my question is, should I register the domain with .com ending or should I register it with my country code top-level domain. so for example, lets say I live in Austria, what would get me more traffic: mydomain.com or mydomain.at

    I'd always go .com.

And make sure you click "exact" instead of "broad" when using google keyword.

Hard to believe there is a 1 word, 10k exact local, .com available.

Why not register both? You can tailor content based on the local market or more generic global market, if applicable to your target market of course. You could at least forward one to the other if you don't want different content on each - for the cost of a domain it's worth doing.

Also worth noting is that Google have recently rolled out an update to reduce the impact of 'exact matching domains'. Better to have a matching domain, but the benefit of the keyword in the domain looks like it's reducing in effectiveness - your content and in-bound links etc will be more important:

I tried to post a link, but my post count is too low (I only joined today). Search google for 'seomoz Google's EMD Algo Update - Early Data' for more info.

.com has more authority then any other extension. Since you are at the domain.at country, I think that you should still use .com.

There is no evidence of this and nothing anywhere by any search engine that says they give more authority to a .com other any other TLD so why would you say this? Please, back it up with some evidence for us.

Hey OP. Why not get both the .com and .at version?

Since, the domain name have 10k LOCAL monthly searches I advised you to get the top level domain from your country. Why? Because the domain targets your country and it is beneficial to you.

Do you want to attract local or international traffic? If you choose .at domain, you will rank better for Austrian users in Google. On the other hand, in other countries you will rank worse than with .com domain. Also keep in mind that .at domain will be easier to remember for Austrians while .com domain may be easier to remember for international visitors.

10k local monthly searches, with low competition sounds amazing dude; you should register both .com and .at and you can redirect one to another or you can maintain the .com users separately.

If the site is a .com, it would help a lot in getting you traffic worldwide, as opposed to an Austrian domain.

However, you mention that it's going to be in your country's language...

So I guess that you're only planning to target people who speak the language?

But still, it would be useful having a .com as you will be able to reach people around the world more easily...

It's also good for branding purposes.

I would roll with the .com extension. If your site becomes successful... you might want to capture all of the other domain extensions besides .com (ex: .net, .org, .info)

As many others stated above. ".com" is the way to go.

Im on board with whoever said to register both the .com and .at. But if you're only targeting local searchers it seems to me that the .at would be the way to go because google should give priority to that domain for the local searchers.

If you're trying to build a brand around this keyword get them all.

You don't have to choose based on Google because using Google Webmaster Tools you can indicate a .com is aimed at a specific country, which will boost your rankings for the .com in that country (so it's treated like a country domain).

If you change your mind later, you can reverse it. In GWT it's under Settings.

As far as I'm aware the extension makes very little difference. The questions you need to ask yourself are these:

    a) what extension do you think your visitors will expect/want to see?
What is your own experience here. Does it matter to you if a site is a .com or a .country? Would it affect whether or not YOU visited the site?
    b) how will your visitors get to your site?
Most are unlikely to type in yourdomain.extension. So how many of them will even notice what extension you use?

You need to look at it from an seo point of view. The language that your site is written in will give Google a clue about who it is aimed at. As someone above said, you can tell Google in their web masters tools which country your site is aimed at.

So the only remaining question is - does the extension affect your ranking in the LOCAL results for your country. My personal experience is that it makes little or no difference. There's a theory (backed up a Google video) that local hosting affects your rankings. Around a year ago I moved some of my UK sites to a UK host and server. Their rankings didn't change at all.

    Why not shoot for both?

Historically I'd go with the .com.

But remember, things change so rapidly now adays in SEO that it's difficult to say which is better.

I could argue either way really.

.com is safer, but others might have what I refer to as "unorthodox advantages"

It depends on what your targeted market is. If you target globally, go for .com. If locally, you may consider a local domain. So when people see your domain name, they know you're talking to people in that country specifically. This may help you get more targeted traffic to your website. If you only sell to customers in your country, why wasting your time getting visitors from other countries?

If you market is local, and word is on local language then go for ccTLD, but .com is always good. So get both if possible. If you market is global then you must go for .com

One thing to think about is when someone is trying to remember you website and type it in manually. Are they more likely to type yourname.com or yourname.at

(As so often) Big Mike's post above (#28) is the one you need to read, think about, and understand.

There are many posts above made by people who haven't read all of your original post and - not appreciating your situation - are actually answering a different question from the one you asked! :p

    You need the .at domain-name.

If you want to buy the .com domain-name too (just to make sure that nobody else does) and redirect it to the .at domain-name you're using, that's another matter, and maybe not a bad idea at all. But the one you need, given your situation, is the .at one.

You also need to have the website hosted inside Austria.

And here's a special guest appearance by that nice yellow-boy Mr. Cutts, from Google, to explain just one or two of the reasons why ...
