Does anyone know where all these meme/picture websites get their images from? I am referring to websites like 9GAG, THEMAPICTURE and OBSTACOL.

Do they just troll through the internet and add their own captions or is there a one stop shop place to get them?

They either go to someone who specializes in creating graphics or they just copy from others who originally posted them on their website.

It is so easy to get them online for free.

Well yea I know that many people just steal pics and post them on social media and their websites. Just wondered if there was a place of choice or maybe these sites pull in a feed from somewhere. Those sites do quite well so was looking into it.

That I don't know. Maybe someone can pop here and help you with that.

These pics are made for 'stealing.' It's not like the 'original artist' is selling prints.

Would like to get an answer for this as well. I presume that some of them do take the time to create new content however there are times when you see the same content in different places.

go to amazon.com and search "royalty free images"
You will find products with many thousands of images on CDs/DVDs just for a few dollars. This way there is never any doubt if you are stealing or not

Oh I believe these meme sites either have an in-house team who does the graphic designing or they outsource the job from someone else. It's also possible they get a collection a of these memes from their members.

Some of them just get the watermark and put it again with the new watermark of their own website 4chan.org is a nice place too

Wow, you guys really don't know how these images are propogated do you?

User boards such as 4chan, Reddit etc.. The images have value because they form part of the huge ecosphere of 'in jokes'. Without community attachment to the memes, there's no meaning.

Im assuming the people running the existing sites have a high level of engagement in the respective boards, and understand where the humour originates. Sorry for the cynical post, I just find it laughable how the suggestions here state theres 'in-house graphic designers' or an image stock library from Amazon.

Good luck, your gonna need it with that tough crowd. Be wary of 4chan, they dont like people commercialising their culture.

Websites like 9Gag don't get their images themselves.

The images are submitted by their users.

    If that's what you mean?

Yeah, you may find the post an easy stuff for you because that's what you do (as far as your signature is concerned). Everyone can be cynical in their responses, especially if the thread is in their field of expertise. But I guess a lot of experts chose not to be cynical because they know that's not the best way to show their worth in that field.

I do appreciate what your saying there. Im not actually in the 'meme' business at all, I just find internet culture fascinating - and have spent an unhealthy amount of time looking at these things

Point taken though, I will try to be more gracious in how I compose myself on the boards

And that 4chan site does well for itself? Just looking at it made me want to leave.

It probably has more active users than every IM forum put together and then some, you do realise that the vast majority of internet memes originate on that site right?

No was not aware of that. Main question is...are all these sites doing pretty well for themselves? Doesn't seem like traffic would be an issue and with traffic...you get revenue.

I know some people are making very good money through these sites, but again it is people that are from these communities. No offence but it seems like you are approaching this from an entirely financial view point with no understanding of the origins of your market and in this instance could well open you up to hackers, ddos attacks, etc.

Wise words. Someone that understands what a hornet's nest that place really is!!

And yes, that is where memes are born - the grimy underbelly of the internet. Try selling stuff on 4chan, you will be destroyed by the legions of hackers that live there

You can search google images for royalty free pictures to use. You can open the photos with Paint and put some captions in. Easy way for low budgets.
