I had to smile at rule #1. (90% of your opt-ins will never
buy anything from you) in light of the subject line of the
thread (40% open rates and 25% clickthrough rates).

The point here is that marketers often complain about
their "low conversion rate" when they are doing quite
well based on general marketing results.
