"Too much" is such a relative term! I forced my self to learn all of the stuff that I was "awfully bad" at in the beginning because even the best contractors have grass roots! It's hard to know what could have been easily done by yourself or how much to pay for something unless you know the complexity of it. It's great to outsource, but I think it's powerful to understand the systems before throwing money at anything.

For instance running an ad campaign is suicidal until you've fully researched how to do it effectively. Now if you have a massive budget to play with then disregard everything I said and proceed to buy like 200 more sites, I'm sure one of them will work! Either way good luck and don't worry about it too much, whats done is done, look to what's next and congratz for taking action!

I guess it depends on how many sites you want to put up.
If you want a network of 100 sites then you may not be able to afford it at the rate you're going.
If that's your main site and you don't plan on creating dozens of money sites, then it seems reasonable.

    Dear friend!

I believe that this amount of money is too much for a newcomer. It would be great if you made this question before you spend money! If I were you I would spend some money to one coaching program.

Of course I would made some research and I would find the best product to buy according to real reviews, testimonials and advice from people who have purchased the same product.

You need to spend money online for domain name and hosting account. It is not difficult to engage with web design...there are many free videos on youtube where you can learn for example step by step how to make text logo for your website. Now if you are facing some grammar errors with the english then you can spend money for articles but you have to know that you get what you pay for. So there will be a great difference between an article of $2 and an article of $40.

I hope you all the success and my advice is to make a research before you make anything online. The most difficult part of online business is to get traffic on auto-pilot. So don't spread your money fast !!! Try to work also and don't spend all your money for services online.

    Good luck,
    Zouras

I don't really plan on spending anything on something i know i can do. Design Is just something that i am awfully bad at. So far its the only thing that i have spent on that is not "necessary" although in my case unavoidable.

it depends on how serious you are as a newbie. Most of the good quality comes to pay something.
If you paid for design, then it means ur site might have higher conversion than if you do it yourself. I think that's good. Now just concentrate on how you will get traffic and make money with that website.

The only thing you have to worry about is your Return on Investment.

Don't think "How much is it to build this" - think "How much can I make with this"

The site might bring you nothing and then you lose.

But what if it triples your return?

Learn what this process provides for you.

Then, go from there. You will know if it's a failure before anyone else.

    The hosting/domain cost is reasonable.

Surely you can earn $150+ in a year.

It is not too much. You may consider the amount spent by you as an investment that can produce good results in the long run. Spending for hosting and domains is generally not considered as too much of spending.

$150 isn't bad. Consider an offline business where you would have to pay tens of thousands of dollars. As long as your site makes money... you can recoup that investment simply and easily.

I guess that depends on your budget and what not. Buying a domain name, hosting, and an autoresponder are standard, but I personally wouldn't spend money on articles and what not. I'm cheap. Also, I wouldn't want to outsource something that I haven't yet learned to do myself. I wouldn't pay for stuff to be designed unless you plan on keeping this site for a long-time, the site that you become your "flagship" for your online business and allow you to brand yourself. That's just me.

I guess i was a little bit concerend because i hear alot of people saying they mak big bucks with just paying for domain name and hosting. I know very well, i am poor with design so it was to be expcted

Hi joey, I do understand what you mean. I worked on design a few weeks despite knowing that i was never good at it. I just don't have the feel when it comes to designs. I learned some basic in photoshop and other softwares but just couldn't come up with something that would satisfy me.

i think its a reasonable amount to spend, especially since you have a years worth of hosting figured in there. I think it was wise to outsource the design and pay a little for it instead of racking your brain and putting up something that looks bad. Now just focus on making that money back and doing as much as you can on your own until you are in the black. Good luck with it .

Well to be frank, it depends what your goal is. If you want to sell products on your site that earn you $100+ in commission for each sale then you only need to make 2 sales to earn your money back. The rest is just profit and should be put back into the site to earn even more sales commission. Good luck!

i think it is pretty reasonable provided you are tracking your conversion rates and so on and so forth. If you get a good rate.. well.. it well spend money..

If you want a real business with a real income, you need to treat it like a business! Period.

And yes, that means being willing to spend some money. $150 is nothing in the grand scheme of things when building a business.

Hosting and domains are cheap. Where a lot of Warriors go wrong is being cheap with design and back office things like autoresponders and shopping carts.

In IM, you really CAN compete with giants like Coca-Cola and Microsoft from your home -- IF you're willing to invest in good web design and back office systems.

I learned the hard way to stop going for cheap web design. My current web design cost me $2500 (a one-time cost). And I FINALLY got the good design I needed.

My 1 Shopping Cart account and merchant account cost about $170/month.

Aweber is $20/month and my hosting is $10/month ($120/year). Domains are $10-$15 whenever they're due for renewal.

My average monthly expenses are a little over $200/month -- not counting any ongoing marketing.

But I'm building a "real" business, not just "trying" something on the side. The difference in mindset is HUGE.

Yes, you need to spend smart and you don't want to overpay for anything unnecessarily. But if you're unwilling to spend money at all -- or close to it -- then you're going to struggle the entire time you're trying to "build a business."

The "trick" is to determine what you absolutely need and what you don't -- and being willing to invest in what you DO need.

For years, I felt a 1 Shopping Cart account was too expensive ($129/month). I wasted a TON of time, trying to piece PayPal and AWeber into a workable system. It just never worked the way it should. Finally, I threw in the towel and did what I should have done in the first place.

Be smart about your spending. But when you know you really need something, don't be afraid to spend money on it.

    Hope that helps!

Don't worry too much about $150 you spent to build your website. You will gain that back and even more. You can do this if you have a solid plan on how you can monetize your website or if you're selling a product/service, hook people to buy from you. This means you need traffic and now this is where your focus should be.

        Terribly.

I didn't make one sale. But it was a lesson learned.

You can have the fanciest sales letter in the world, but if 1) your offer sucks, 2) your audience doesn't care or 3) it doesn't solve an immediate problem - then you can spend as much as you like and it wont make any difference.

Like what most warriors suggested.. It's all about your return on investment. Nothing is expensive if you're able to get back your investment imo. Would you invest $100,000 to make $200,000? Of course! Now, will you consider that as "spending too much money?" Of course NOT. You would consider $100,000 as peanut. You'll surely be hungry for more (if you're able to get back your ROI).

On the other hand, if I'm "investing" only $150 with 0% return. I'll certainly consider that as expensive.

By the way, I think your money is well spend on hosting. It's an essential tool for IMer imo.

That amount seems about right, but what kind of website are you trying to build? Because setting up one with WordPress is pretty easy, and there are many many resources out there that teach you how to do it. YOu don't actually need a designer, just a theme with unlimited site licenses, so it's a one-time payment, and you're good to go.

I too think that it is a relative term.

I spent $7k when I started the biz ($3k on attending courses, $2k on products, $2k on traffic and list building). By the 3rd month, I earned back $2k, so am still in the red.

At times I think that I spent way too much to get started, especially on the courses and product. Last week, I just helped a friend to kick start his IM biz, and he only spent less than $100, because he did not need to pay for the courses and products which I paid $5k for.

But I see it that paying for the 3 day courses is gaining years of knowledge from the experts. Rather than I myself spending that number of years to learn the foundation, I paid him to teach me. But I still believe in continously learningm, just that I am looking for to breakeven first before I pay to learn any futher.

If you got a halfway decent site, and it's not just a template,
then NO you did not spend too much money.

You get what you pay for and if you're building a professional
business image, then you should expect to invest a little.

Sure, you can do things on the cheap, but it usually shows
in the looks/quality of your site/business.

There is no such a thing as "too much", unless there is no ROI (return on investment)!

So, did you make some money with it?

Recently I paid 400 $ for developing a new project that had only returned me around 70 $ from the initial investment, but the return is undergoing and I am looking forward to getting the investment back, plus: gaining a substantial profit on top!

As you site brings back the initial investment, I advise you to spend more and more and more... But always make sure the investment comes back.

Only by investing will you be able to gain from it...

Relying merely on free advertising and generating substantial income is almost impossible today.

If you are making back more than you're spending, you're doing good. I would learn all you can about SEO so you can get traffic from the search engines. I would also post on forums and blogs related to your niche, put videos on youtube, try guest blogging....these are all great ways to get traffic that are free to do or could be outsourced for quite cheap.

If you're not sure how to monetize your site, then check out what your competitors are doing to get some ideas. If you decide to set up more sites, check out this forum to get ideas on how you can cut costs without compromising quality. Good luck!
