For most of my marketing e-mails, I send BOTH HTML
and Plain Text versions of the message.

That way, the subscriber can receive the e-mail in the
format suited to the device they're using.

However, with my HTML e-mails I keep images to a
minimum and use formatting only for emphasis.

I like HTML messages because of the ability to track
open rates etc, and also getting higher click-through-
rates by using action words in the anchor text of links
    in the message.

I have been doing some live human testing lately, watching people open my emails and comment on TXT vs HTML and I have been hearing more positive comments about a nice corporate-looking outlay...

Some have even said that they look more trustworthy...???

You could test the presentation and layout of your
own e-mails to see what works best for you and
        your list.

I prefer to keep a more personal-looking layout
that at first blush looks like a standard e-mail.

I want to focus to be one the words in the e-mail
        - not the layout or graphics.

Agreed. I am finding that there are so many levels of impression and interaction with this that it is going to be an indefinitely ongoing process.

Additionally, I can see that as lists slowly turn over naturally and depending on the virtual environment that they were built in, what works now may not work later and vice versa...

Just do both, it doesn't kill lol. Copy and Paste! But, not everybody will see the images so you'' have to just put text, keep in mind that there are people with really old computers.

I send out both. My HTML messages are all text, but I like to be able to set the font and highlight pieces of text (bold, italics).

It seems like you are on the right path and that testing and tracking will be an ongoing part of your process.

    All the best,
    Michael

I use aweber so when i send a html email it automaticaly converts it into a text email to send to users who are reading via something that does not except html.

Even though i never send fancy emails and the most i ever do using html is just bolding headlines etc

You must to try both and compare your clicks from each format.

I notice that I receive more clicks on plain .txt because they reach the inbox, in html some messages goes directly to spam.

How I know? Im my own subscriber with different free accounts: yahoo, hotmail, gmail and test if they reach the inbox or not.

But as Michael Oksa says,, I like to change fonts, use bolds and write good "click me" messages on the links instead the plain aweber tracking code.

I used to send only text emails, but I have discovered months ago from testing that:

HTML emails with text gives me just as good open rates and click rates, perhaps even better than pure text emails.

I also found that HTML text emails are much less likely to end up in my Outlook or Gmail spam folder.

Now I always use HTML text emails, with the additional backup pure text email of course.

I've been using Aweber's block html editor and I use simple headers and paragraphs. They look really nice and I'm very happy with them. I will also be tracking to see which works out better. After all, it does not matter what I think, it matters what my customer thinks.

I definitely send both types, but if I am sending from my phone the GetResponse app only allows to send plain text messages.

The only issue with the GR app is that it doesn't track clicks, so I do that manually. I need my own damn computer haha sharing one is not fun.

I personally just send html emails now

    Everything works fine for me

I usually create my emails in the text format though first and then cut and paste the message
    into the html field

I send the HTML, then I post on my website. In the text version, I just put a link to the post on my website...that way, I get more traffic and they can see all the purty pictures.
