How to stay focused & get rid of shiny-object-syndrome?

I think this is maybe the biggest problem when it comes to running a business or actually seeing a consistent income.

Too much stuff, not enough focus.

Anyone have thoughts on this? It's something I see with just about every newbie marketer.

Well, when i started out I fell into the category of "try tons of things. one will make it" so none made it big. Now that i'm more "mature", I stick to one. Its working!

    And for focus :
in the morning : 1 hour exercise
in the evening : 2-3 glasses of wine.

    It helps.

    Hello Kennyall!

I have to tell you that I have read all the post and I can honestly admit that this was great! A lot of people are thinking that making money online is something easy because its just a web but it is really not.... you need to work hard and never change “scheme” until you succeed in one niche. Also many people don't understand the role of failure in every business and they give up after a couple of failures and obstacles.

    Thank you,
    Zouras

    Hi Kennyall,

Thank you for writing this blog post. I definitely agree with you on the fact getting momentum is important. In my opinion it is one of the hardest thing to achieve online because, even though you did not use the word "consistency" in your post (perhaps on purpose), consistency appears to be an important element of being in a state of non stop momentum.

Yes, that is a whole topic in itself. Will probably put out some content on this as well but absolutely it plays a large role in momentum.

That was a gread read and I'm guilty of making a lot of those same mistakes early on.

    It's all about momentum now...

It is better to concentrate on one thing first. I see so many people building 30 sites then wondering why their not making any money. Then those sites never rank. Get one site get it ranked tweek the conversions bank the cash then move on. Never move on until you are making money from what you are currently doing

You definiyely have to stay focused on the task at hand. Pick a strategy and stick with it. If you working at an amazon site ,,,,then stick with it, Don't jump to ppc. Give it a good try.

Most newbies just have no idea of where to start. Without a mentor to guide them, they're dead in the water. So they purchase thousands of dollars worth of product... and it still doesn't help them. Then years later, they finally "get it".

It's hard to start concentrated because you want a
general education as a base before you specialize.

How many things have you done in school that
you never used in real life? I can think of quite
a few. So the same applies to entering the field
of internet marketing. Simply because you
tried something and it failed doesn't mean that
your time was wasted--the same way that your
time was not wasted doing algebra.

So what we refer to as the "lack of focus" in
the beginning was just the general education
one needed to get focused later on.

    At least that's my perspective.

I suggest you prepare a plan every morning before you work, and record the work status one by one after you finish them.

Using this way, I can focus on essential jobs, instead of spending too much time on browsing forum threads.

In my experience working with people "online" that have never owned a business and never went to business school lack direction and often fall into the Shiny Object Syndrome. It is as simple as that.

People without a business education, formal or street education, usually do not know where to start and do not have a plan.

In short.. they simply start buying into unverified business opportunities and products that they hope will make sense to them. When that does not happen they start all over and sometimes a bit wiser, but a bit poorer in terms of money and direction.

Yes I do have a solution Kenny. Print out all the material you need to work with and do your work offline. Unsubscribe from all the mailing lists that keep on sending you links to WSO's as well.

    Hope that helps

everything looks so attractive, but of course i realize that it's mostly just a waist of money, and it's very important to focus on something.

So, yep, its a good post.

Let's say you have a product you aren't going to use.

Do not ask for a refund. You will see why later.

Write down the product and why you won't use it in a little notebook.

Now, the next time you see a product you want to buy, pick up your notebook and look at all the reasons you didn't use stuff.

If any of the reasons you have already written down apply to this product, you will not use it, either.

    So don't buy it.

That's step one: stopping the haemorrhage of money on crap you don't use.

Every month, sit down and look at all the reasons on your list.

This is why you spend money on crap you don't use.

Some of those reasons are BS. Look for them. When you find a reason that's BS, guess what?

It wouldn't be in your book if you didn't have a product.

So go get that product and use it. After all, your reason for not using it is BS. And aren't you glad you didn't get a refund on it?

Think of everything you buy as an investment. You are investing either in something that you will use in your business, or something that will teach you not to buy more crap like it.

So you lost $37 on a product about forex and now you know you're not going to do forex ever. So what? Now you have "I don't do forex" in your book, and you will never buy another product about it. That will save you a lot more than $37 in the long run, right? And what if you later decide that reason's BS? You'll have a forex product right there, legally purchased and still rightfully yours to use.

There are lots of perfectly usable methods to get over this syndrome. Pick one and use it. They all work, more or less, if you just grab one and do it.

    Holy crap, sounds like WSOs

yes, great point.. especially due to the fact that a lot of this stuff runs in trends (look at WSO's for example, one minute video marketing is hot.. next it's offline).

When that trend makes a return in the marketplace you already have a reason for why it won't work... just be careful not to talk yourself out of things that could potentially bring you results.

not only does shiney object take your work away from you and waists your time, it also gets you back into that info overload stage.

Focus on products and building your list. Then set aside an hour or so a week to learn more or take in some more, but only for the things you need in your business.

NOT taking action is the one of the single biggest reason most fail online, the second would have to be chasing for that holy grail or secret out there that is never found.

The secret to making money online, is that THERE IS NO SECRET, once you realise that you can go out there, and do the things you need to build a REAL BUSINESS and not just a money spinner that shiney objects out there give you.

Yes.. agreed. I've been doing it since I got started... in notepad lol, nothing fancy just writing down what needs to be done and then knocking them down 1 by 1.
