You've reminded me about a free-hosted website - created on free space provided by my ISP - that I made back in 1996. I haven't touched it for a few years.

I just checked my stats - it's averaging $1.05 a day from AdSense.

It's amateurish, but it used to make $300 or $400 a month, mainly from AdSense.

Start with a free site if you feel you really have to, but I strongly recommend that as soon as you can afford it, get a memorable domain name and your own hosting.

Having your own domain name and website looks more professional. When you have your own site, you're not just earning a few dollars, you're building a business - maybe even creating an asset you can sell one day if you wish - or leave to your kids.

Also, with a free site, you run the risk that it will suddenly disappear. In 1997, I had a free-hosted site that I'd built up to stage where it was getting 100 visitors a day and was starting to make money. Without warning, the ISP closed down and my free site disappeared. Months of work went down the drain.

One exception I can think of... if it's a hobby site appealing to hobbyists, it has really useful content, and you're not trying to look professional, you can probably get away with having a totally free site.

Yes you can but you are making a mistake doing blogging with a free blog you do not have 100 percent control of and the felixibility.

I agree with some of the people who have said that we don't have 100% control over the platform we use. Platforms like Blogspot and Squidoo can shut you down at any time. We can earn money from it but we have the risk of losing everything in just a short time.

It's better to own your personal website and have those free websites promoting your main website.

Yes they do. As long as free sites can pull traffic from search engines, they still make money. But the problem is that you are at the mercy of the free site, if they chose to shut down your site, you have got no other choice.
